To think this is why people’s ideas of portion sizes is messed up.

Watch any diet/healthy eating show and they talk a lot about portion size. I had an M&S butter chicken curry tonight. It costs £4 and comes in what people would commonly believe is a single potion size. I do actually only eat half at a time, mainly because I have it with naan bread, but can easily see why someone would eat one on its own. Yet look on the back and it says, in small print, “portions 2”.

DS has been eating a lot of tinned soup lately rather than more calorific lunches as he is trying to lose weight. But again look on the back and 1 tin is apparently 2 portions. So why don’t they sell it in half tin sizes? You get half tins of beans, spaghetti etc so why not soup.

Many, many other foods are sold in portions of 2, sometimes even 3 or 4. But it’s not clear unless you go looking for it.

If we want to tackle the obesity crisis then why doesn’t it say in big letters on the front “x amount of portions” rather than bury it in small print on the back? Yes you could argue that people should look and inform themselves but realistically, until a person is already overweight, most won’t bother.

While I don’t disagree that people need to take personal responsibility I do think that the way things are packaged and sold has had an influence and that highlighting to people what a single portion is could go some way to making a difference.

Home made anything is almost always healthier, even with loads of cream though, because it isn't highly processed and doesn't contain additives.
Home cooking can still contain lots of fat and sugar, and you are likely to eat bigger portions than with a ready meal.

I agree with @CounsellorTroi that home made portion control can be tricky, especially if you’re cooking with the intention of leftovers/batch cooking. I’ve started dishing up the whole thing at once into tubs for freezing etc to stop just eating the whole thing at once.
At least you can see the salt/sugar/fat that’s gone in because you’ve put it there!

Same. I have full on ready meals like that with sides like rice, mash etc in tubs.

Ready meal producers have no interest in your health or moderate eating.

Their only priority is to sell as much as they can at the lowest cost.

It wouldn't make sense for them to tell you to eat less.

@Arbadacarba my husband was 7.5 stone when he was 20. I used to tell him that he'd put on weight once he had children. He would of course roll his eyes...

He did go from 8.5 to 10.5 when the boys were little Grin

He's now 53 and for about a month earlier this year he was - for the first time since about 1978 - heavier than me. Back to about 10.5 now.

@ChubbyLittleManInACampervan my nan recipe also includes 50g of butter for 225g of flour (as well as brushing with melted butter once cooked).

Going back a few posts... at a family gathering my sister once announced that there was salmon for dinner, with fish fingers for the kids. S1, aged about 8, asked very diffidently if there was by any chance enough salmon for him to have a piece. She was decidedly taken aback! (there was plenty, it just hadn't occurred to her)

I'm just watching a michael Mosley thing on youtube about eating junk food for 21 days. They showed the portion sizes the government may want to bring in for takeaways.

I know our portion sizes have increased, but the sizes they want to introduce were absolutely ridiculous.

I never look at portion sizes, just the per 100g info on the back/side. It often has % of rid or is traffic-lighted too. I know you are going to eat more than 100g, but it is the only way to compare products and you can scale it up.
I use this a lot with cereals which are v sneaky with their sugar and serving size info.
It does make doing the shopping lingerSmile

Yes, I was surprised at spreading butter on naan bread too, I've never done that. It's just for soaking up the sauce isn't it? Unless its garlic and coriander which is lush and can eaten on it's own (but definitely needs no extra butter on it!)
Btw I brought one of those supermarket box Indian meals for 2 the other day. Can't eat all at once usually and they are like eating a Christmas dinner!
It had nutritional breakdown of each dish on the side and the naan bread had the most sat fat per 100g of all the dishes! That did surprise me

'I cook the infamous mumsnet roast chicken each week. To get it to stretch to my family of 8 for an entire week I just eat the air around the roasting dish for my lunch. I'm so busy managing my huge, but hard working, family that I just have an instant coffee for breakfast, I don't waste money on Costa which is how I afforded the deposit on my 6 bed detached home. I don't like to eat a large meal in the evening so I just lick one of the kid's yoghurt lids and that does me tea.'

I read somewhere a Mcdonald's cheeseburger should be an adult portion. I just googled and it has 268 calories and a small fries has 237 calls, almost 500 calories sounds like an adult sized lunch or dinner. Compare that to the burger my local shop sells with 3 patties, cheese, bacon, mozzarella sticks and a side of fries.

I love a takeaway and overindulge on occasion but with portions like that being normal, you can see exactly why people struggle with weight.

Kids food didn't really exist in the 80s apart from some cereals, fish fingers and munch bunch yoghurts. We just ate the same (bland) meat and potato that the adults did.

To think this is why people’s ideas of portion sizes is messed up.

268 calories isn't huge - but how many people will just have the cheeseburger without any fries, or possibly a sugary drink or whatever MaccyDs do in the line of puddings nowadays?

I always warn myself not to click on these threads but always do. Once again I now feel so greedy lol because I do, indeed, eat a whole tin of soup with bread. And probably a biscuit afterwards. But I've done the whole under eating thing and it just wasn't worth the mental and physical pain in the end.

I don't disagree with you but I also don't disagree with the OP and it's not great that her post was deleted as she's lived that experience with her mother; the most influential person in a child's life.

I think that many people (women particularly) bandy about terms that they don't actually mean because they think it makes them sound good/having plenty of self-control. Self-control has a very positive spin to it and it's what anorexics definitely exhibit. It's perhaps that aspect that people aspire to rather than the incredibly dangerous and damaging impacts.

I am though getting heartily sick of the MN chicken muppets. It's not funny or amusing now, it was barely that back then. It just disrupts the thread and it's annoying having to scroll past these not-funny moronic quips. I'm surprised that MNHQ doesn't step in and delete them because they can be quite triggering, however stupid they are.

However - it’s pretty obvious that there are LOADS of quips about “the competitive under eaters arriving”.,. but no actual competitive under eating comments. On this thread, or in my experience any of the other threads where people say it will happen. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Did one person once make a ridiculous under eating comment, and it has become lore - like the Sistine Chapel Screamer? 🧐

Lots of things have become lore on MN but the general braying and overdoing of 'a slice of cucumber' has lost its charm for me, Cocomarine.

I'm more annoyed for the OP actually, her first post was leapt on by the gannet-goons and as usual, it swayed the thread. Not everybody is a 'competitive under-eater' and if they are, better to just ignore the post and not give it oxygen.

OP's post was interesting as was the poster(s) who mentioned the skewing of portion size to make the macro-nutrients fit the green light system; I'd never thought of that but it makes perfect sense. So many of us have a struggle with our weight, to varying degrees and it would be great to be able to post on the subject without having every nuance picked over ready to be ridiculed and mocked (if there are enough 'chums' about).

Unfortunately, for interesting discussions about food, portions and weight, people have to leave MN and go elsewhere. Or at least AIBU. It's downright impossible to have it here.

I am just glad some of these didn't make it into a certain nice and supportive section where food is doscussed.

Very few of these are funny, especially lately.

I agree, the competitive undereating jokes are tiresome and have nothing to do with the other comments on this thread. The weight loss section doesn’t seem to attract them, thankfully. The moneysaving expert forum is a good place to discuss how to stretch food - the MN chicken is actually not unique to MN.

Search for the jacket potato for lunch thread. Or the how many slices of dominoes do you eat thread.

The JP one was full of people saying if they had a small jp at lunchtime they wouldn't need to eat until dinner the next day. The dominoes one was full of people staring that they can barely manage a whole slice of pizza and a small pizza feeds their family of 4.
