To think this is why people’s ideas of portion sizes is messed up.

Watch any diet/healthy eating show and they talk a lot about portion size. I had an M&S butter chicken curry tonight. It costs £4 and comes in what people would commonly believe is a single potion size. I do actually only eat half at a time, mainly because I have it with naan bread, but can easily see why someone would eat one on its own. Yet look on the back and it says, in small print, “portions 2”.

DS has been eating a lot of tinned soup lately rather than more calorific lunches as he is trying to lose weight. But again look on the back and 1 tin is apparently 2 portions. So why don’t they sell it in half tin sizes? You get half tins of beans, spaghetti etc so why not soup.

Many, many other foods are sold in portions of 2, sometimes even 3 or 4. But it’s not clear unless you go looking for it.

If we want to tackle the obesity crisis then why doesn’t it say in big letters on the front “x amount of portions” rather than bury it in small print on the back? Yes you could argue that people should look and inform themselves but realistically, until a person is already overweight, most won’t bother.

While I don’t disagree that people need to take personal responsibility I do think that the way things are packaged and sold has had an influence and that highlighting to people what a single portion is could go some way to making a difference.

Indeed. And if posters had any sense, they would have just ignored those ridiculous posts and the lack of audience would have done the trick. Not difficult really.

Why not ask for a 'MN chicken' board? Fill it chock full of giddy posts/posters and knock yourselves out with 'witty' one-upmanship. Perhaps then it wouldn't irritatingly be on every thread everywhere else...

@3Britnee maybe they are the people that work at food companies decide what a serving size will be! 😂

I just looked up the info for domino’s and it’s actually quite interesting - personal and small pizzas are deemed one serving and a serving from medium and large pizzas is 3 slices. This means the calories per serving vary a lot. On a pepperoni pizza the highest per serving is for a small pizza and lowest for a medium and the difference is almost twice as much! It’s 655 calories for a medium portion or 1255 for a small so that would be a significant amount of your daily calories.

More importantly, it contains 6.57g of salt which is more than the adult daily allowance! So I think I’m going to stop DP from eating a whole large one to himself before he brines himself Shock

Surely you apply your own criteria to determine portion sizes rather than rely on what says on the packet?

Oblomov21 · 07/06/2021 17:44

Oh dear. I can wolf down a Tesco curry without even breathing. We had one each whilst in our caravan a couple of days ago, with 2 naan's between 3 of us. Hadn't had one for ages. Thought the portion size was perfect.

Best I leave .....

Some of them belong to another forum and this is a regular pleasure if theirs. They believe there is competitive undereating on any thread discussing food and concerns.

@Silvercatowner

I buy that same butter chicken and it feeds my entire family of 5

That's nothing. I can stretch it out for 3 days. 4 if we take it in turns to lick the carton.

4 if we lick the carton - I am laughing out loud - you've made my day!

@SmidgenofaPigeon

Personally, I’ve taken to using the plates from my Sylvanian Family country house set. I find they give me just the right portion.
🤣🤣🤣

Curry is sabzi. It’s meang to be eaten with rice, dal, 1 or 2 homemade rotis (wholewheat) and a tiny amount of pickle. When I make it at home the whole meal probably has 500-600 cals but has enough protein keep me full. Supermarket curries are also designed to be eaten the same way.

They aren’t meant to be scarfed directly from the pack.

Anyone who refers to themselves as a "teeny tiny" wants fucking shooting anyway IMO.

@HarebrightCedarmoon

Fast food is really unsatisfying though.

I've been doing the Fast 800 and eating 800 - 900 calories a day in two meals recently- careful portions of things like salmon, mackerel, avocado, full fat cheese, olive oil, butter, with lots of greens and some rye bread, lentils etc, nothing over-processed at all - satisfying food and I've felt less hungry than when I've eaten twice as much on diets in the past. Yet I could eat 800 calories worth of McDonalds in a single sitting and still feel like I wanted more - could probably eat the whole meal again.

That's a great way to eat without feeling hungry and while feeling really well and full of energy.

We have a set of plates that were DH Grandmothers from the 1960’s they are so much smaller than our set bought 5 years ago. I reckon you can fit almost double the amount of food on the ones I bought.
