To think this is why people’s ideas of portion sizes is messed up.

Watch any diet/healthy eating show and they talk a lot about portion size. I had an M&S butter chicken curry tonight. It costs £4 and comes in what people would commonly believe is a single potion size. I do actually only eat half at a time, mainly because I have it with naan bread, but can easily see why someone would eat one on its own. Yet look on the back and it says, in small print, “portions 2”.

DS has been eating a lot of tinned soup lately rather than more calorific lunches as he is trying to lose weight. But again look on the back and 1 tin is apparently 2 portions. So why don’t they sell it in half tin sizes? You get half tins of beans, spaghetti etc so why not soup.

Many, many other foods are sold in portions of 2, sometimes even 3 or 4. But it’s not clear unless you go looking for it.

If we want to tackle the obesity crisis then why doesn’t it say in big letters on the front “x amount of portions” rather than bury it in small print on the back? Yes you could argue that people should look and inform themselves but realistically, until a person is already overweight, most won’t bother.

While I don’t disagree that people need to take personal responsibility I do think that the way things are packaged and sold has had an influence and that highlighting to people what a single portion is could go some way to making a difference.

A full 400g tin of soup is about 200 calories. I’m not fat from a whole tin of soup..... stop making excuses for people. I’m overweight but almost not (lost about 3.5 stone). It’s eating 6 bags of crisps while drinking wine over lockdown is an issue, not a decent portion of soup.

ILoveShula · 03/06/2021 20:50

The pack looks like a single portion.

Other own brand instant noodles and shops are available.

To think this is why people’s ideas of portion sizes is messed up.

It’s calories, not portion size. You eat half a tin of soup you’re going to be after the biscuits half an hour. Veg soup is super low cal- pint of that and you will be full up til tea time.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 03/06/2021 20:51

That’s a bit of a shit crass comment about anorexics actually OP.

Grellbunt · 03/06/2021 20:52

@AdoraBell

DH has gained 2 stone, or more, and suggested using Hello Fresh as his son is using that for portion control. I know he’ll be raiding the cupboards if I serve the correct portion Hmm with him it’s down to his childhood, but he can’t see that.

Apparently most of us in development countries eat 40% more food than necessary. Cannot remember where I read that. It is really easy to over eat with pre prepared meals.

I can over eat with my lovely home cooked food, too. I just love food!
Meruem · 03/06/2021 20:52

But if it is all down to this green/amber/red packaging isn’t that really sneaky and misleading? And maybe needs a rethink?

If you read the reviews it wasn't just me who thought it was one portion.

lceniWarrior · 03/06/2021 20:53

Why don't they make the traffic light system per 100g or something similar rather than portion size?

SchrodingersImmigrant · 03/06/2021 20:53

Yeah, I agree with Smidge. You might wnat to get that removed
supermoonrising · 03/06/2021 20:53

The only way to be sure is to count calories etc. The food industry’s job is to take your money. They couldn’t give a shit how fat/unhealthy we get.

abeanbaked · 03/06/2021 20:54

Omg it's the MN chicken thing again

supermoonrising · 03/06/2021 20:54

Because they want you to eat as much of their product as humanly possible.

ILoveShula · 03/06/2021 20:54

Of course it is misleading. You glance at the numbers and it looks good, but really it's not.

It's no just M&S and supermarkets, it's on sweetsm crisps and things too.

Meruem · 03/06/2021 20:54

I’m sorry if you find it crass but it’s genuinely true. She has banged onto me for years about how she’s wishes she could throw up so she could eat what she liked. She badgered my slim daughter by going on about “are you anorexic” with genuine admiration in her voice until I had to firmly tell her to shut up as she was upsetting DD. You may find it crass but it’s been my reality for many years.

I will eat half of one of the 600g tubs of fresh soup, but I don’t think I’ve ever only eaten half a tin of soup! The one person I know who routinely eats half a tin of soup generally has 4 thick slices of buttered bread with it. I think I’m better off eating the entire tin with one or two slices of bread...

CornishGem1975 · 03/06/2021 20:55

I am on a diet and I eat a whole tin of soup for lunch, it's still only just over 200 calories - which compared to a sandwich etc if pretty low-calorie, but I understand what you are saying from a labelling point of view.

CornishGem1975 · 03/06/2021 20:56

Oh and I have no bread with that tin of soup.

And yes, it's as sad as it sounds.

MaxNormal · 03/06/2021 20:56

Why are you all relying on processed crap to eat anyway?

RaspberryCoulis · 03/06/2021 20:57

Who's relying on it? Nothing wrong with the occasional ready meal or pizza.
CornishGem1975 · 03/06/2021 20:57

Meant to also add - I don't feel it necessary to blame the food industry when I overeat. Pay attention to what you're eating - be accountable to yourself. I have been counting calories for over 8 weeks now and it's been eye-opening.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 03/06/2021 20:59

@Meruem well at the very least it’s misinformed then. Lots of anorexic people love eating, it’s not about that. And making yourself sick is bulimia, not anorexia, although there’s often some crossover.

Still comes across as crass. I’d wager you are having issues if your own if you’re starting a mock-horrified thread about portion sizes.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 03/06/2021 20:59

Exactly

Daphnise · 03/06/2021 21:00

Just an aside- how is a standard tin of soup two servings? What bowl would you use for half a tin, a large egg cup?

Silvercatowner · 03/06/2021 21:02

I buy that same butter chicken and it feeds my entire family of 5

That's nothing. I can stretch it out for 3 days. 4 if we take it in turns to lick the carton.
