To think this is why people’s ideas of portion sizes is messed up.

Watch any diet/healthy eating show and they talk a lot about portion size. I had an M&S butter chicken curry tonight. It costs £4 and comes in what people would commonly believe is a single potion size. I do actually only eat half at a time, mainly because I have it with naan bread, but can easily see why someone would eat one on its own. Yet look on the back and it says, in small print, “portions 2”.

DS has been eating a lot of tinned soup lately rather than more calorific lunches as he is trying to lose weight. But again look on the back and 1 tin is apparently 2 portions. So why don’t they sell it in half tin sizes? You get half tins of beans, spaghetti etc so why not soup.

Many, many other foods are sold in portions of 2, sometimes even 3 or 4. But it’s not clear unless you go looking for it.

If we want to tackle the obesity crisis then why doesn’t it say in big letters on the front “x amount of portions” rather than bury it in small print on the back? Yes you could argue that people should look and inform themselves but realistically, until a person is already overweight, most won’t bother.

While I don’t disagree that people need to take personal responsibility I do think that the way things are packaged and sold has had an influence and that highlighting to people what a single portion is could go some way to making a difference.

@Wonderfulstuff

I cook the infamous mumsnet roast chicken each week. To get it to stretch to my family of 8 for an entire week I just eat the air around the roasting dish for my lunch. I'm so busy managing my huge, but hard working, family that I just have an instant coffee for breakfast, I don't waste money on Costa which is how I afforded the deposit on my 6 bed detached home. I don't like to eat a large meal in the evening so I just lick one of the kid's yoghurt lids and that does me tea.
Glutton! Do you not realise what a burden you are to the NHS? So selfish! What's your BMI? Grin

Portion size counts but so do calories. People are getting fat because they eat to many calories. People need educating. Some think that if they eat loads of fruit and salad etc that they wont put on weight, not true. It is harder to eat 1000 calories of apples than it is 1000 cals of maccies, because they are more nutrient dense and will fill you up but if you ate 1500 cals of apples a day (as an example) you will gain weight than if you still eat the 1000 of maccies!

I'm using those calories as an example.

I’d happily subsist on red wine. Sod solids. GrinWine

Personally, I’ve taken to using the plates from my Sylvanian Family country house set. I find they give me just the right portion.
What a fabulous idea!! I'm off to Smyths for my new dinner set Grin

Its delicious, just like honey and desiccated coconut, which sounds odd but its actually 👌

Aah no that does sound delicious, I love Peshwari naan 😋

@3AndStopping

I don’t think people are this stupid. I can just look at the packaging/portion and think ‘that’s for 1 person’ or ‘that’s for 2 people.’ Doesn’t mean I always follow the advice Grin
How is misjudging a portion size anything to do with being "stupid"?

I do think people have the wrong idea about portion size. Especially amongst children.
Loads of parents over feed their children the unhealthy bits and underfed the good bits.
I think bringing back proper cooking and life skills sessions in school is essential. Learning to shop for ingredients and making healthy and yummy food from scratch. Tinned soup is there for an emergency in our cupboard. But, we have homemade soups in the freezer and they’re the bomb!

Jeeznotyouagain · 04/06/2021 18:12

I think it’s not just portion size but also the “it’s healthy so I’m going to eat it in bulk”. True for salads (provided you don’t drown it in olive oil) but not so much for things like hazelnut / almond / peanuts etc.
In the office I regularly saw people mindlessly snacking on M&S bags of those or protein bars cause “healthy” without them paying attention that, yes, healthy, however, tons of calories as well.
Never mind the endless streams of frappuccini etc

To eat 1500 calories of apple you’d have to eat about 3 kg of apples though. I don’t think it would be possible to physically eat enough apples to gain weight!

I thought most ready meals are for 2 people?!! M&S has a special "Meals for 1" range. Charlie Bigham is the same, the standard meals are for 2, it's the individual ones that are labelled as being for 1 person.

I would say there are more ready meals for 1.

The Charlie Bigham for 2 are huge though, about 700 to 800 grams, then there's the smaller ones at about 380 to 400 grams if I recall correctly. I don't think many people eye up the one for 2 thinking it's for 1.

The problem some of us are having isn't that. It's the fact that a 200 kcal tin of soup is meant to be for 2 people, or if you believe some people on here, a family of 4 😂

Another thing though; m&s Cumberland pie for 1 is 400 grams whereas the one for 4 is 1200 grams, so 300 grams per portion. If you're part of a family, I guess you don't eat as much..?🤔
Mind you, it's probably calculated based on the average mumsnetter who would just eat a 15 gram serving while DH and DC eat the rest between them.

Ddot · 04/06/2021 18:32

Yes let's clog the world up with more packaging

3Britnee · 04/06/2021 18:33

You might add more veg or sides for a family meal.

Ddot · 04/06/2021 18:34

Try a smaller plate, some are the size of bin lids

Imapotato · 04/06/2021 18:41

Serves two is really just a challenge though isn’t it?

Sydendad · 04/06/2021 18:47

I just have to say this: tinned soupes, m&s dinners and any other "ready made" products are filled with sugars and e numbers. I don't think it matters what portion size you eat. You can eat the smallest portion: eat it regularly and you will still gain weight.

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 04/06/2021 18:49

@3Britnee

Well, you're gonna have to if the servings are 300 grams each.

It's pretty clear the reason they've done it that way is because it's more difficult to get away with calling a 3 portion ready meal a "family pack". Now it's a nice little meal for mum, dad and 2 kids.

Yes

I've had funny looks about feeding steak to the kids. People think it's too pricey. Wasted on them etc. I don't say it to them, but I'd rather feed my kids steak (or lobster, or organic veg, or the expensive cordial without sweetener) than drive their brand new 4x4 or bathe in their new en-suite.

EmeraldShamrock · 04/06/2021 18:52

howrudeforme · 04/06/2021 18:59

There was a programme on portion size and the correct size for lasagna looked tiny. But that is the recommended size.

Go to a restaurant and they’re giving you a portion meant for 4 people.

Calories aside I think it’s the chemicals/salt/sugar.

I was shocked to read that average family has 12 takeaways per month. My ds now uses that to show he’s from a deprived background🙄.

So many things contribute to obesity levels. We’ve gone down the ready meal /takaway route but other countries are doing this, too.

25 years ago up in an Italian mountain village. Home cooking. No snacks. Kids walk everywhere.

When they joined the euro they started to import more ‘stuff’ and you now have kids with a snickers in one hand and Pringles in the other. Everyone indoors on their xbox. Parents tired so send their kids to the local pizzeria for dinner where the big thing was pizza with chips on top. My sil was amazed by a new product that looked suspiciously like finders crispy pancakes.

Home cooking looks like it’s on the way out.

You are doing a good thing. My parents fed us like that (we really didn't have much things like nuggets etc anyway so no other choice😂).

Itgetsthehoseagain · 04/06/2021 19:11

I feed steak to both my DC (with mash and veg) and they are crazy-healthy! DD1 asks for it bloody...
