To think this is why people’s ideas of portion sizes is messed up.

Watch any diet/healthy eating show and they talk a lot about portion size. I had an M&S butter chicken curry tonight. It costs £4 and comes in what people would commonly believe is a single potion size. I do actually only eat half at a time, mainly because I have it with naan bread, but can easily see why someone would eat one on its own. Yet look on the back and it says, in small print, “portions 2”.

DS has been eating a lot of tinned soup lately rather than more calorific lunches as he is trying to lose weight. But again look on the back and 1 tin is apparently 2 portions. So why don’t they sell it in half tin sizes? You get half tins of beans, spaghetti etc so why not soup.

Many, many other foods are sold in portions of 2, sometimes even 3 or 4. But it’s not clear unless you go looking for it.

If we want to tackle the obesity crisis then why doesn’t it say in big letters on the front “x amount of portions” rather than bury it in small print on the back? Yes you could argue that people should look and inform themselves but realistically, until a person is already overweight, most won’t bother.

While I don’t disagree that people need to take personal responsibility I do think that the way things are packaged and sold has had an influence and that highlighting to people what a single portion is could go some way to making a difference.

@Kljnmw3459

Plate size also matters, apparently they're bigger nowadays and we're bad at estimating what a regular portion looks like when we have a massive plate in front of us.
They are. I have inherited a vintage crockery set from my parents. Half a can of soup would fill one of tje soup bowls. Put half a can in my bowls and it hardly covers the bottom! Plates are the same.
LineofFruity · 04/06/2021 19:14

@Arbadacarba

You can get lids for soup to keep in the fridge if you're not sharing a tin.

The lid off a tube of Pringles works for this purpose.

Not that I ever eat Pringles, dear me, no .. Grin

No no no. You need to use the lid off Nutella. It’s a perfect size. I’ll carefully measure a half tin of soup for lunch but then need to eat the whole jar of Nutella with a spoon in order to get a lid to keep the rest of my portioned soup fresh.
VolcanicEruption · 04/06/2021 19:18

If I am opening say a tin of soup I take 1/2 and tip the tin into a plastic beaker add lid then fridge. Same with beans. They are used within a couple of days .

ImbarbaraB · 04/06/2021 19:22

I shop online so if buying ready meals to take for work lunches I specifically search the meals for one category

However when I’ve been in the shop in person to do the same thing it does need looking at most packets as it’s not always easy to tell at first and are generally mixed up with the meals for 2 shelves

On hello fresh portion sizes - I found they bulk up massively on carbs to make the meals cheaper to produce and more profitable for them
Not great value for money and actually far too carb heavy for a typical average female.

@SchrodingersImmigrant

I've had funny looks about feeding steak to the kids. People think it's too pricey. Wasted on them etc.

You are doing a good thing. My parents fed us like that (we really didn't have much things like nuggets etc anyway so no other choice😂).

I’m astounded at the poster you quoted saying that people say certain foods are wasted on kids! Do people really think like that?

Surely what you feed your children day in day out is one of the most important ways you impact their wellbeing. Good nutrition is so important, it gives them the building blocks for their growing bodies and sets them up for a healthy lifestyle versus growing up malnourished or overweight and picky.

We all eat well here but if I had to choose between DS having a nutritious homecooked meal or me eating it he’d get it every time. And what on Earth is wrong with spending on good quality food and ingredients for your children if you can afford it!?

@AtlantaGinandTonic

I’d happily subsist on red wine. Sod solids. GrinWine
This is my general preference too
browneyes77 · 04/06/2021 19:32

To be honest I focus on the calorie and other nutritional info and base my decision on that.

I put some lockdown chunk on and did WW. And doing that really helped me to look at what I was putting in my cakehole and the nutritional value of food. Things I always thought were healthy, actually weren’t very healthy at all.
It did also help me with portion size.

I see where you’re coming from though. And actually for those of us that live on our own, having the option of things separated into their actual portion sizes wouldn’t be a bad idea, especially from the perspective of reducing food waste.

PeachyLife · 04/06/2021 19:34

@Silvercatowner

I buy that same butter chicken and it feeds my entire family of 5

That's nothing. I can stretch it out for 3 days. 4 if we take it in turns to lick the carton.

Why isn't there a like or laugh button here. I actually laughed out loud.

Excellent way to safely save canned food for a second meal!

Well done, that wumman!

Nobody wants to be anorexic.

Not sure there. I recovered from anorexia many years ago. I'm now slightly overweight after having a child and not doing enough exercise. I do find myself wishing I could just "not eat, like I used to when I had anorexia" so I could just lose weight quickly. Sometimes I look at images of very skinny women with an almost "hope" that it will trigger some kind of urge to not eat.

But then, you could argue I'm just not mentally recovered despite being physically recovered. I guess that would be a valid argument.

Chikapu · 04/06/2021 19:46

A slice of cucumber at breakfast

Wow, I can't believe you eat the whole slice.

Happymum12345 · 04/06/2021 20:03

Ready meals are often packed with fat and calories, so the amount you get in one of those compared to a home cooked meal would likely be less. It really does depend on what you’re eating.

Grellbunt · 04/06/2021 20:03

Whoever is astounded should read the other thread I am on about UPFs and kids etc....in my view there is a widespread belief that kids food should be somehow different from adult food and often inferior. Why? Many and various reasons - that's a whole other discussion!

boompah · 04/06/2021 20:04

@RaspberryCoulis

OMG you eat HALF a butter chicken with naan? OMG all those CARBS. If I ate that much, I wouldn't need to eat again until Halloween. A slice of cucumber at breakfast and i'm STUFFED for the day.

Do love a competitive under eating thread.

Cucumber? Humph. Gluttony.

I rinse my mouth with water for breakfast and spit it out and I'm full for the day.

It isn't easy.

People are so black and white thinking when it comes to being fat and obesity. Sleep seems to be one of the most important things to staying slim, as I have just found out, lost loads of weight after quitting shift work without adjusting a single bit of my diet, and it was a bloody hard physically demanding job as well.

Nocutenamesleft · 04/06/2021 20:24

So my kids were really really tiny. Grew up very very short and slim. I had a long discussion with my pead and nurse. Who says they are so used to seeing obese children. That they panic when someone small comes to them. We discussed why that is and she said portion sizes are a real problem. That and the sugar in food. Baked beans for example have some ridiculous amount of sugar. But primarily it’s down to education. Not realising ribena has sugar in it for example and thinking because it’s fruit. People think it’s healthy.

Things like that. We need to bring back cooking lessons. Cooking from scratch. Too many foods are so over processed. Which then emits the feel good feelings in our brain. So we eat more of it. Even when full. Where as our own cooked chicken nuggets for example don’t make us crave so much more of it.

It does work.

Nocutenamesleft · 04/06/2021 20:26

@Meruem

I’m sorry if you find it crass but it’s genuinely true. She has banged onto me for years about how she’s wishes she could throw up so she could eat what she liked. She badgered my slim daughter by going on about “are you anorexic” with genuine admiration in her voice until I had to firmly tell her to shut up as she was upsetting DD. You may find it crass but it’s been my reality for many years.
I was w size 4 until I hit 35.

Every single day someone asked me if I was anorexic and it’s incredibly upsetting. I wanted to tattoo my forehead with i eat!!! I could polish off 6 ice creams a day without gaining weight. Nothing changed until I got a bit older. Im a size 8 now but that feeling of never being enough never goes away.

WisconsinRaw · 04/06/2021 20:59

Aldi's salted caramel brownie dessert is labelled as being two servings, even though it's the size of a Volvo.

(I took on that challenge and won btw.)

TheVolturi · 04/06/2021 21:01

Half a tin of soup is not even worth having, unless you have a load of bread too, and then you're better just having the full tin of soup with no bread!

SupremeDreamz · 04/06/2021 21:15

If I get a pizza I always cut it into 4 slices rather than 8, because I think 8 slices of pizza is too much. drum solo

Seriously though @Meruem "portion size" is a bit misleading. Most of the supermarket ready meals contain loads of salt, partially to increase the shelf life and then lots of sugar to make them taste good. So that's why people are surprised when they buy something like a lasagna from M&S and see it's intended to provide more portions than they thought.

People are missing the point about the tin / half tin of soup argument.

It's not the calories in the other half of the tin that the traffic lights thing is flagging up as bad...it's the salt and sugar content.

Being healthy and a healthy weight is not synonymous with small portions. You can be unhealthy on small portions of bad food and healthy on massive plates of good food.

kennycat · 04/06/2021 22:18

@3scape

You can get lids for soup to keep in the fridge if you're not sharing a tin. Shop around for significantly smaller plates, or use ones sold as side plates. Most dinner plates are far too big.
You aren’t supposed to store things in tubs apparently. I do, but it’s not a great thing to do. But yes plates and bowls are now huge which doesn’t help. My mum’s plates are tiny compared to ours. Ironically I’m tiny compared to my mother…🙊
Maireas · 04/06/2021 22:22

@SmidgenofaPigeon

Personally, I’ve taken to using the plates from my Sylvanian Family country house set. I find they give me just the right portion.
😂😂😂
FatCatThinCat · 04/06/2021 22:22

I like hot buttered toast dipped in tomato soup. Proper comfort food. I could easily polish off a whole tin and half a loaf. If tins were smaller I'd just buy 2.

Grellbunt · 04/06/2021 22:31

I wonder how many "portions" the jumbo popcorn bucket at Cineworld is....
