To be falling out of love for the hot tub?

We bought it last summer when lockdown hit. At first it was great.

It’s now becoming a pain, keeping it clean and lid on / off, washing swimwear. I also find DH wants to go in it all the time and I don’t! AIBU to dislike it now!?

@LowlandLucky

Read a story in the newspaper last week abut a young woman that lost her leg due to a filthy hot tub. I would rather sit with my feet in a basin of cold water than get in a hot tub.
And I saw a woman in clinic last week who'd lost her arm as a result of being pricked by a rose thorn.

Ban roses!

MaMelon · 04/06/2021 11:53

Who said anything about banning hot tubs? That poster was simply expressing her preference, no biggie.

I strongly believe we cannot avoid germs and bacteria. Even the air you breathe and the water you drink has germs in it. Just think what lives on your pet fur (cats and dogs are full of them!) I kiss my kids daily, I have swapped all manner of germs and bacteria with my husband already. I have even sat in a normal bath with him (and the kids when they were very young)! Exposure to germs is what builds a good healthy immune system. Living in a sterile environment and avoiding possibly enjoyable things because of germs is why we have an increase in allergies these days. We need them.

I have one of these super chavvy inflatable tubs. We put it up for a few days at time (we don't have it up permenantly), usually over holidays or bank hols etc. We clean the filter, test the pH, alkalinity and chlorine levels before we get in. I do a system flush regularly to remove any oil, biofilm or grime. We wash before and after getting in. We are all capable of maintaining clean arses. And we are the only people that use it (mostly because we are antisocial).

We also have a trampoline and BBQ Wink

I don't see the problem really. Each to their own.

I was anti them years ago, thought they were noisy eye sores.
Then we rented a couple of holiday homes with them and slowly the appeal grew.
We’ve now had our entire garden designed around installing one! It’s being delivered in 2 weeks. I am really looking forward to relieving my aching back, I’ve got some very long running issues with it, hydrotherapy has really helped and the hot tub will be a nice way of hopefully managing the discomfort between visits.
I can see myself using it before work and in the evenings. It’s a nice way of having time with the teens away from screens. Dh says he isn’t that fussed but I know he’ll be in it, he was very into maintaining the above ground pool last year, testing for levels and adjusting the chemicals accordingly, fiddling about with the filters etc.
I won’t be going in naked though! Proper swimmers for me and any other family members who are getting in.
The bloke in the pool shop advised dropping the temperature to below 40 when young dc are in, he suggested 38 was a good starting place, and to not let them stay in for hours at a time. Also for them to stay hydrated.
But of course kids are allowed in your own privately owned hot tub if you want them in it!!

What do non chavs use their garden for? (Resigned myself to being a mn chav which appears to mean someone who lives a nice life and has fun grin)

Growing veg, reading, playing with the kids and dogs, meeting with family and friends. Difference is and I know I'm going to get slated for this, I tend to find that the chavvier folk are much louder, brasher and have less qualms about imposing themselves on others.

My nearest neighbour is s 1 1/2 acre field from me do I don't need to worry too much about sound but I still don't let my children scream and my guests manage to talk at a nice volume.

warmandtoasty2day · 04/06/2021 14:32

you've summed it up for me spaniel

tabulahrasa · 04/06/2021 14:44

I find the opposite tbh.

Having worked a stint in Environmental Health I wouldn’t go near them. Was a real eye opener. They are perfect breeding grounds for Legionnaires disease. Safety alerts were raised for Legionnaires outbreaks in the UK related to hot tubs, both commercial ( eg at b&b’s, holiday let’s) and private. Legionnaires can be v serious, even fatal. www.google.co.uk/amp/s/legionellacontrol.com/legionella/legionnaires-disease-spa-pools-hot-tubs/amp/

@ImitationofBeing

They are right noisy fuckers aren't they?

A house a few doors away has just got one. We can't believe how loud it is. Made more noisy because they can't hear each other and are shouting "what did you say?" constantly.
But loving their neighbour who has his patio doors open, and in retaliation playing his country western favs and singing along loudly.

hahhahqhaqa laughed out loud at this
Jellyfishnchips · 04/06/2021 15:23

Obvs the properly maintained ones were not the problem, just ones that had not been properly maintained. The bubble aeration can disperse Legionnella into the air ( where present) so people nearby can catch the disease without being in the water (esp dangerous in communal environments eg cruise ships or other communal spaces) whirlpool/ spa baths can also harbour nasties relating to the pumping, aeration/ re- circulation of warm water and harmful bacteria can populate the pumps. Not saying people can have them and look after them but just to be aware of the risks and especially if it is not your own hot tub or whirlpool bath. If you were going to stay at a holiday let with one if would be hard to judge if there was a problem or not. Would recommend checking the paperwork with the holiday letter re: maintenance to satisfy your self it was safe to use. I was looking into birth pools recently and there had been a recall on heated ones ( with heat pumps to re circulate the warmed water) due to Legionnaires. Use and enjoy I say but be careful with maintenance and if it’s not your own, check it’s been properly cleaned and looked after

MaMelon · 04/06/2021 15:26

Yep, that’s my garden too spaniel. We chat with friends, the kids played when they were younger, we garden...we just don’t do it at top volume with music blaring.

We have an omnitub, took about about six weeks to deliver, they’re handmade and come in a variety of colours - luckily
I restrained myself and went for Ivory

Ours is 120cm long and 90cm wide and v deep - my husband is 6’5 and even on him it’s up to his shoulders[/quote]
Thanks so much. These were the ones I was looking at. This is my new favourite thread.

iwannafurloughmydp · 06/06/2021 00:15

@FrozenVag

They’re horrible things

We have a Japanese bath which is basically hot tub depth inside, jazzy lights and jacuzzi stuff but no worries about germs etc, the weather, sliding about in flip flops, angry neighbours or maintenance. Why anybody would sit in the same manky water day after day is beyond me

Nice name by the way 😁 Did you know that the one you have - ofuro- is used by Japanese families to shower THE whole family ? Haha just out of curiosity, as when you mentioned that I remembered going to a Japanese friend’s house when I was a child and as the showering time starts with the oldest of the family, followed by the adults then the younger children in the end, I was the last one to shower in the fucking mucky dirty water of the whole family….. I didn’t know or made any fuss as a child but learning that after I grew up was a shock 🤣
BBOA · 06/06/2021 16:22

Having heard from people who have done pool plant/ maintenance training at work I wouldn’t get in one! Legionella, bacteria, poo particles and worse ...unless you are avid at cleaning, constantly testing chemicals etc of course. I can’t see the attraction......heaven forbid a holiday let one 😱🤢

CounsellorTroi · 08/06/2021 17:58

Well I have just tried out my new hot tub (inflatable) that I got as a 60th birthday present. I love it!!! We certainly won't be having any parties in it, it's meant to be for 2-4 but it's only just big enough for DH and me! Won't be playing music either. The jets are loud, but we intend to only have them on during the day on weekdays when the neighbours won't be around. Certainly not late at night!

Popcornbetty · 08/06/2021 22:37

'I can’t see the attraction......heaven forbid a holiday let one'

A holiday let hot tub should be avidly cleaned and serviced regularly. Any i've experienced have been immaculate and serviced properly.
