So many posters have twins! And given it can be easy to forget from one thread to the next whether you've had a multiple birth, I wondered if a general twin register might be helpful. Feel free to have a good rummage around at home to see if you have any.

I think a lot of people on here are missing the point of the thread!

The OP wasn't suggesting it's very rare to have twins. She's alluding to the twins which miraculously pop up in any thread that is a bit dubious (I may be exaggerating here for dramatic effect).

No one is suggesting there aren't lots of real.life twins. It's just fun to watch out for the fictional ones on here!

DeflatedGinDrinker · 30/05/2021 10:33

I have twin siblings, twin cousins, triplet second cousins and my grandads brothers were twins.

Sparechange · 30/05/2021 10:33

@WhatsGoingOnHereThen

HFEA advice isn’t clinic policy

I went to 5 different clinics during my ivf ‘journey’ and all of them offered my double embryo transfers (I was 32 for the first one and 39 for the last)
I’m sure they wouldn’t have pushed it if I said no, but none of them tried to persuade me to have a single embryo either

Twins happen with about 1% of natural conceptions but around 20% of IVF ones

WhatsGoingOnHereThen · 30/05/2021 10:35

It's 37, but most cycles under 40 it will be recommended that only one embryo is transferred, depending on the circumstances. A 39 year old with grade AA 5 day blastocysts will be unlikely to have 2 put back.

The incidence of twin pregnancies is higher in IVF pregnancies than in non-IVF that is true, but that does not translate to: most twins are IVF. There's a less than 50% chance that twins are IVF so it's a strange assumption for people to make, in my view.

gagrag · 30/05/2021 10:35

I have 3 sets in extended family, DH siblings are twins (all non-identical) & 2 close friends have twins (identical). No IVF.

Even less believable, my mom didn't know she was having twins until the second one was coming out.

Same for my gran

sailmeaway · 30/05/2021 10:36

No twins, but know many, many, many twins! Out of our friendship/kids friends grps I can think of 8 pairs off the top of my head...

WhatsGoingOnHereThen · 30/05/2021 10:38

It's 11% for IVF pregnancies compared to 1-2% for non IVF pregnancies.

Your experience of IVF is vastly different from mine, I was told time and time again that transferring more than 1 embryo was only in very exceptional circumstances in order to avoid the risk of multiples.

Happinesscomesfromwithin · 30/05/2021 10:38

You need much less than you think you need. I spent a fortune before my twins arrived and hardly used any of the stuff.

Do not get a side by side pram - get a tandem one.

MrsPinkCock · 30/05/2021 10:39

I have identical twins.

My friend has identical twins and she is an identical twin herself.

I have two friends with non identical IVF twins.

I am friends with another set of identical twins.

My friend has triplet nephews.

It’s ridiculously common in my life and I have no idea why MN seems to think multiple births are such a rarity!

Happinesscomesfromwithin · 30/05/2021 10:39

I had one embryo transferred that split into two and resulted in my identical twin girls! Was a shock to say the least.

LynetteScavo · 30/05/2021 10:46

Like @stuckinarutatwork, for years people thought I had twins because two of my DC were exactly the same height.

I think it's about one in sixty births are twins, so there going to be loads of posters with twins.

NameyNameyNameChangey · 30/05/2021 10:48

No twins, but I know a woman who had two sets of twins, one after the other. (luckily, there was a four year gap, not a year gap!)
She'd be called a troll on here!

Charmtaste · 30/05/2021 10:48

@WhatsGoingOnHereThen I did 8 rounds at 3 different clinics. 1 insisted on single transfer. The other 2 allowed 2+. IVF clinics are a bit like the Wild West when it comes to following guidelines.

Glittertwins · 30/05/2021 10:49

@Einsteinsings

I have teen twins. But it’s one of the details I sometimes change to make less identifiable. So, for example, I might say I have dc age 12 and 14 but actually they 13 year old twins. Unless it’s a post specifically about the challenges of multiples, I don’t understand why people seem to get so worked up about it
I do the same.
waitingforthenextseason · 30/05/2021 10:49

I know loads of twins and a couple of pairs of triplets ... I work in primary schools.

Charleymouse · 30/05/2021 11:11

Rosti1981 sorry to hear about your twins.

I have twin ID boys.

One only lived for nine hours so I have a twinless twin. He tells me at school he is in a class with two other twinless twins.

I feel a fraud saying I have twins as I have only one remaining. I suffer with twin envy and my best friend from college had twins via ivf which has resulted in me losing contact as I cannot cope with the close proximity to "look what you could have had."

I also have other friends with twins and my DC small rural school had three sets.

Makes for awkward conversations when someone asks how many children you have and you say 4 then they say you must have your hands full and you have to say it's not that chaotic as one is dead. If you don't say you have the full amount it feels a betrayal of the deceased twin. Tricky conversation.

Charleymouse · 30/05/2021 11:14

Sorry just reread and my post is not very lighthearted sorry.

So I am on the register as having twins, knowing twins, just remembered second cousin also has twins via ivf. So please pop me down in the has twins category.

However don't ask me anything about what it's like to have twins as only managed a day with 2.

PattyPan · 30/05/2021 11:16

I don’t have twins but my DSis and I have often been asked if we are twins (we are not) so my DM would easily be able to pretend she did Grin

Chiwi · 30/05/2021 11:18

I saw the parent trap so basically yes.

Charmtaste · 30/05/2021 11:25

@ Charleymouse I am so sorry 💐

MuchTooTired · 30/05/2021 11:54

@Charleymouse I am so sorry 💐

Boadicea2 · 30/05/2021 12:15

Adult twin boys here. Knew loads of other multiples through the twins club including one woman with 2 sets of identical twins, several sets of triplets including one set which was supposed to be the final third child.
We are still part of the TEDS study, although I'm not sure how much the twins respond to the questionnaires any more

CutieBear · 30/05/2021 12:25

Despite what PP have said, I don’t think it’s common to have twins. Twins run in my family, but I don’t know many twins. It might depend on your circle of friends. Older mums (I think after 35) have a higher likelihood of having multiples. IVF is likely to result in multiples too.

LunaMuffinTop · 30/05/2021 12:32

I don’t have twins but my grandma is a twin and I went to school with 2 sets of twins.

LunaMuffinTop · 30/05/2021 12:35

@Charleymouse I am so so sorry for your loss Flowers
