So many posters have twins! And given it can be easy to forget from one thread to the next whether you've had a multiple birth, I wondered if a general twin register might be helpful. Feel free to have a good rummage around at home to see if you have any.

I have two friends with twins.

When I had a dolls' house I had Lundby twin girls because I was fascinated by the idea. They slept in bunk beds.

babbaloushka · 30/05/2021 09:40

I am a twin and have twins! Also have a set of cousins who are twins, there's a few in the family. I know a lot of twins too as mine went to a twin playgroup.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/05/2021 09:42

I dare say more common now because of IVF.
Single daughter of a friend who decided to ‘go it alone’ had beautiful twins not long ago.

Ninkanink · 30/05/2021 09:43

@nowlook (👋) I don’t think @C0nstance gets you very well...

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/05/2021 09:43

And I knew someone who had triplets, no IVF, no family history. Bit of a shock!

TheWeeDonkeyIsMySpiritAnimal · 30/05/2021 09:44

FIL was a twin. He was also one of 13 children. His DM had 3 husbands (not at the same time), one of whom only had one leg (I believe he lost it in the war), but all DMs kids were by her first husband. First husband also had a concurrent second family, although he wasn't a bigamist, which consisted of around another 12 children. First husband was also a decorated war hero having been a bomb disposal expert in WWII.

All the above is true but I imagine if MN had been around in the 1940's, the DM would have been banned for trolling all because the fact she had twins set off some posters spidey senses Grin

BluebellsGreenbells · 30/05/2021 09:45

4 sets in their year in junior schools, 8 sets in high school.

Friend married a twin.

They aren’t that uncommon.

The ‘fascination’ comes from single moms not from worn out twin moms.

m0therofdragons · 30/05/2021 09:47

I’m an id twin (but my sister died when we were younger) and I have ID twins girls (now 9). Twins in lockdown was a blessing and a curse.

bridgetreilly · 30/05/2021 09:47

1 in 80 pregnancies are twins (naturally conceived). Fertility treatments may also make them more likely. If you know 80 people chances are you know some twins. It’s just not that rare.

Slub · 30/05/2021 09:48

I have twins who are now young adults so feel free to add me to the spreadsheetbut I do name change fairly regularly

nowlook · 30/05/2021 09:50

Are you keeping well? You're missed!

I know four couples who have twin babies or young children.

When I was at school there were three girls in my class who were twins (their twins went to a different school for some reason, but they definitely existed as met them all).

Perhaps they’re more common than you realise.

WhatsGoingOnHereThen · 30/05/2021 09:53

I'm not sure why people would assume twins are IVF since the HFEA has had a single embryo policy running since 2007. There are still some multiple embryo transfers but the vast, vast majority of IVF treatments involve single embryos. It would have to then split and become identical twins which could happen to anyone.

I wouldn't say I feel sorry for twin parents as it's a blessing obviously but I do think it could be extremely difficult. I have found one baby at a time really, really hard so 2 at a time would felt impossible! I take my hat off to parents of multiples.

sunshinepunch · 30/05/2021 10:05

I'm fairly new to mumsnet and had no idea people would pretend to have twins! How bizarre, why on earth would they.

I probably won't be believed but I have twins boys. This forum surprises me every day 😬

Justbeenjabbed · 30/05/2021 10:07

Perhaps the parents of twins are more likely to seek support on online forums? An interesting little study for somebody!

Feelingbad2 · 30/05/2021 10:08

When I first started my job at a small nursery with 40ish kids on roll, there were 4 sets of twins!

Treaclepie19 · 30/05/2021 10:10

My sisters are twins 🤷‍♀️
Even less believable, my mom didn't know she was having twins until the second one was coming out.
True story.

cornflowersandbluebells · 30/05/2021 10:10

why on earth would they

Well, as lovely as twins are, they do add an extra layer of complication and difficulty to life.

So let’s say you are trying out a begging thread (and yes, people do) - you say you have twins and that increases the sympathy.

Ninkanink · 30/05/2021 10:16

@nowlook I’m really good thank you, although the twins are running me ragged!

Are you still happily shrinking? DH keeps baking delicious bread these days which is very inconvenient for me...

Charmtaste · 30/05/2021 10:22

I have twin boys. I also know 28 sets of twin toddlers . I know them through ivf groups and twin clubs.

DSGBT · 30/05/2021 10:23

I have twins. They are 3.5, a boy and a girl. Conceived naturally, always the first assumption is that I had IVF. They are chaos. I don’t know why anyone would pretend they had them, that’s pretty odd. I though I was special when I found out I having twins and then as the pregnancy went along you realise they are a lot more common than you think!

Amirite · 30/05/2021 10:24

I’m a mum of 4 year old b/g twins. They are IVF and I know another mum with identical twin boys the same age as mine which has been lovely. Not many people feel able to be honest about their ivf journey. I think there’s a bit of stigma and shame attached to it, I personally couldn’t care less but some are very vocal about disagreeing with ivf too so perhaps to avoid confrontation or upset it’s not mentioned?

All mum of twins, what is the first question people ask… Are they twins?! 🤣

Charmtaste · 30/05/2021 10:25

@WhatsGoingOnHereThen that is not true. In the U.K. It is 2 over 35 and abroad you can have more implanted.

Sparechange · 30/05/2021 10:28

I don’t understand how I don’t have twins...

17 rounds of IVF, all putting back 2 embryos and not even a sniff of a multiple pregnancy

MiaowMiaow99 · 30/05/2021 10:30

I know a woman with 2 sets of naturally conceived twins (all boys).

She would be chased outta town if she ever popped up on MN.
