To be really surprised at the amount of “naice” middle class people who apparantly do coke?

I see this on mumsnet often that coke use is rife in middle class circles. I’ve never been offered coke on a night out, or seen any of my friends do it: and none of them have ever mentioned doing it.

Aibu to be so naive not to realise it is so widespread

@Doingtheboxerbeat

Where are people getting this " people trying to be cool" thing from ? Honestly, you sound like school prefects when you use this term . We are talking about people who are middle aged and may have a substance abuse problem. This isn't Grange Hill.
This all over.

If users were trying to be "cool"
You would all know about it.

There's nothing cool about taking cocaine.. the old "don't think your cool taking drugs" is from anti drug campaigns at school.

The kind of users op is talking about are the ones doing it with a bottle of wine on the weekend, bank holiday takers, the after dinner people, people doing it privately at home, couples etc

Nobody is sitting around getting exciting thinking "gosh I am SO COOL doing this"

It's the same as nobody over the age of around 21 thinks having a glass of alcohol is cool anymore.

I’ve never tried any illegal drugs. DH tried cannabis at university ata party when a spliff was being shared round but found it an underwhelming experience and never did it again.

EmeraldShamrock · 31/05/2021 16:09

I suppose the big difference is how you can afford to hide then fix the problem.
There is more than a few celebrities whose considered to be MC based on their finances.
A quick trip to the priory helps, no years of waiting lists with no support.

Foxglovesandlilacs · 31/05/2021 16:19

If you’ve never seen or heard of anyone taking it’s likely they just dont tell you. People tend to be black and white when it comes to drugs and you have to be careful who you tell.

catgirl1976 · 31/05/2021 17:14

I used when in my 20s to but I’m old and have a DC so I don’t anymore. Plus I now know how unethical it is.

I do know someone who is an anti-vaxxer who is always banging on on Facebook about how you can’t put that crap in your body and so you know what’s in them etc etc. Vegan, body is a temple, save the world etc. Thinks nothing of snorting a few lines of come though.

ShutUpAlex · 31/05/2021 17:18

It’s a rich persons drug. Poor people do ket.
I used to work in a sailing club in cornwall and the rich sailers and couples with yachts used to unroll and shake out their notes before handing them to me. We used to have to coat the toilets too to stop them all doing coke on the tops.

What is the dark Web when it's at home

Ireolu · 31/05/2021 18:15

In my experience use of drugs like this has increased massively in people in their early to mid 20s. This was definitely not my experience in my mid 20s.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 31/05/2021 18:22

I’m in London, mid thirties. Relatively working class background but now with much more middle class colleagues and neighbours.

I have never used coke, but I know a lot of people who do. Too much money, too little responsibility and too little conscience IMO.

I used to like an E when I was very young and clubby, but these days I’m too uptight. Grin

YukoandHiro · 31/05/2021 18:23

I used to come across it a lot in my 20s but never dabbled - I'm very against drugs after losing a friend to an overdose at 19.

Now I'm in my late 30s and we all have kids I haven't seen or heard of it in years.

I work in the media in London which is probably relevant to the earlier "sightings"

readingismycardio · 31/05/2021 18:24

Never came across this either, thankfully!

YukoandHiro · 31/05/2021 18:27

@aquashiv The dark web is the bits of the internet that you can't find by googling. It's where drugs are sold, child porn is distributed and criminals share information. You need various encryption type software to access it. It's not possible to just stumble across this stuff.

19lottie82 · 31/05/2021 18:32

Or....my personal favourite.....spray all flat surfaces in a cubicle with WD40.

Not a great idea, WD40 is very toxic, and you don’t want someone being too pissed to notice and ingesting it, on your watch. We just used baby oil when I worked in pubs.

1FootInTheRave · 31/05/2021 18:34

It's absolutely rife where I live.

nevernotstruggling · 31/05/2021 18:39

I used to work in a wine bar in Leicester that was popular with footballers and people who want to be around that. This was the 2000's so a lot of spiky hair abs high lights.
We used to spread Vaseline on all the hard surfaces in the loo cubicles to stop the Coke 😂😂😂😂

Devlesko · 31/05/2021 18:39

It's certainly nothing new, I remember the 80's, and the loads o money.
Only mc people can afford it.
A lot continue after dc, especially if they can take time off, to recover and are in senior positions.

wilescunnered · 31/05/2021 18:46

Also rife in certain circles that I mix with. I would have done it about 10 years ago; however I don't want to anymore, largely because of the ethics surrounding it, but I also hate the anxiety the day after and how people become really self-absorbed on it. But yes, very much used by people with "nice" lifestyles and good careers.

shivermetimbers77 · 31/05/2021 18:58

A lot of people I know did it in their 20s , but I can’t think of a single one who still does it in their 40s. I think it’s pretty awful anyway, but particularly once people have kids!

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 31/05/2021 19:13

@Branleuse

I dont think coke use is as common as weed, but its not uncommon either. Its an expensive drug though and a status symbol. Having coke makes people hang around you and its seen as more luxurious and posher than other drugs. I guess thats why some circles love it.

I think theyre playing with fire though. Ive known it cause problems with quite a few people, both healthwise and with their relationships, and its easier for people to get problems with it if majority of their social circle and even colleagues are all doing it.

I never did understand why something shat out of the bowels of a desperate Jamaican/Mexican/South American/whatever woman was deemed to be a higher class product than a dried plant grown a few miles away.

Maybe it's the direct exploitation of the BAME female's body that makes it more special to users?

NewPanDrawer · 31/05/2021 19:25

These threads always seem pretty pointless. There is no way to get accurate usage statistics about cocaine - any survey will underestimate usage, and there is no way to gauge by how much. And anecdotal evidence is utterly pointless, as shown by this thread: some people will say all their friends use it, others swear blind that no one they've met even knows what cocaine is!

And vaseline/WD40/baby oil may bring your porcelain up nicely, but people just take a bump off a key Grin

GoldenLabbie · 31/05/2021 19:26

In my experience it’s usually really scummy types who do it. I remember being at a wedding about four years ago where people were openly doing it in the toilets, even though there were kids there. There was a horrible atmosphere and everything felt on edge. Those of us who weren’t doing it couldn’t wait to leave.

ladygindiva · 31/05/2021 19:31

I live in a cornish village and believe it or not its rife amongst middle class, middle aged, wealthy people here. I've been offered it loads.

NewPanDrawer · 31/05/2021 19:33

I don't see the inconsistency, it's perfectly natural (although there's an interesting debate to be had there with the vegans).
