To be really surprised at the amount of “naice” middle class people who apparantly do coke?

I see this on mumsnet often that coke use is rife in middle class circles. I’ve never been offered coke on a night out, or seen any of my friends do it: and none of them have ever mentioned doing it.

Aibu to be so naive not to realise it is so widespread

My brother lives in London. He's broken up with 2 girlfriends - both vegan, both in successful careers, both into yoga / running / spinning classes - due to their coke usage.

We have a friend who I suspect takes coke on nights out. You never see him tipsy - he is always fine and then completely off his tits (and obnoxious with it).

My parents also have a friend (in his 50s) who quite openly takes coke.

@longwayoff

Naice is a word likely to be used by Hyacinth Bucket whilst hosting a Candlelit Supper. Hopefully, that's descriptive enough.
I’d always got a Hyacinth Bucket vibe from “naice” but that doesn’t fit with the way the OP has used it here. I can vaguely imagine Hyacinth having a go at cocaine if she saw it as the right thing to do to get in with the class of people she wants to break into, but she’d cock it up through ignorance. I think here, it refers to being in the demographic MaidEdithofAragon mentioned.

Jilly Cooper’s books are all about this demographic and the various people who break into it, or don’t quite manage because they’re trying too hard.

traumatisednoodle · 30/05/2021 08:01

Fully paid up member of the middle class here. I think it's about 50:50, some people were doing it at a yr 6 leaving party and I thought that was shocking, media types- less surprising really. I haven't taken any illeagal drugs since 2002, agree it makes people boring and predictable. As a PP said I just think they don't have much going on in their lives....

HumunaHey · 30/05/2021 08:10

It's sad how many people seem to have no shame (even if this is an anonymous forum) with also admitting they took drugs and have young DC. Why is this so normal to some people? Hmm

Stokey · 30/05/2021 08:11

I don't think people do it because they're bored with their lives. It's just an added extra at a big party or festival. Most people I know who do it would do it very occasionally for big events either to stay up later, or, in the case of MDMA, because it makes it more enjoyable.

Crispychillibeef · 30/05/2021 08:24

Haven't RTFT - if you do coke (or other drugs), how do you feel about county lines and the exploitation of children?

traumatisednoodle · 30/05/2021 08:26

So work out how to make it more enjoyable without recourse to chemicals then ? For me it's a cheap thrill of which the cost in human and health terms is far,far too high to justify.

traumatisednoodle · 30/05/2021 08:27

and yes it makes them think that a shit night out is great, why not have a truly great night that you are fully aware of and remember?

Inextremis · 30/05/2021 08:38

Funnily enough, this came up in conversation with friends yesterday, and I was surprised to discover that coke's apparently widely available here in rural Ireland. Not something I'll be indulging in though!

I know plenty of people who might have the odd line at a party or bbq or whatever - they're not people who would care about the ethics within the industry though. I'm a total nestle/coca cola/McDonald's boycotter though and like to think about where I spend my money so I wouldn't buy it for those reasons rather than any aversion to chemical highs or anything.

I don't know anyone who would have a line in the house while their kids are there. I read the Pearl Lowe biography recently and it was a real eye-opener as to how some people live. It made me realise how much of a factor money (and therefore the presence of a nanny) is in relation to how children are affected by a parent's drug taking.

Mygardenisanightmare · 30/05/2021 08:40

I wish the people who happily take it on here would tell us truthfully about how they feel with regard to the ethical aspect of their habit?

Lemonwoe · 30/05/2021 08:42

@SmiledWithTheRisingSun I’m not anti drugs at all. I used to enjoy the odd joint years ago, and have no issues with grown adults doing whatever they want with their own bodies

Sorry OP should have specified I wasn't referring to you personally.

It's just bizarre that there's a lot of condemnation on here from certain posters who are equally baffled that the drug users are not asking them to join in or making it obvious what they are doing Hmm

OnlyheretovoteonAIBU · 30/05/2021 09:12

@JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil

Haven’t read the thread but basically they just want to have fun and don’t give a shit if other people’s children get killed over it

Also they would probably rather move than have their children attend the same schools as the kids who’s lives are ruined supplying their fun. They also look down on those kids and their families when in reality they are lower than them.

This is so true, the hypocrisy is quite something isn’t it? Drugs are only considered scummy and reprehensible if the users are poor.
Goatinthegarden · 30/05/2021 09:16

I’ve only taken coke twice in my life, in my early 20s, I hated the way it made me feel and behave. I know friends who still take it in our 30s. The people I know who take coke all tend to all work in hospitality - not sure if the industry makes a difference. I’m a teacher and as far as I know, none of my colleagues there have even touched drugs....but then we don’t discuss it, so who knows for sure?

I took plenty of other drugs regularly in my twenties, but I don’t take them now for the very reason that someone will have suffered or been exploited for my high.

If drugs were made available to me through ethical and controlled sources, then I would definitely take them occasionally. I don’t really like being drunk, but I do like being high.

Chamonixshoopshoop · 30/05/2021 09:19

Ironically these people that buy coke (with the associated people trafficking, child drug running, exploitation, murder) probably by fair trade chocolate in their Waitrose shop.

What about the bodies of other people's children?

BananaHammock23 · 30/05/2021 09:27

YABU - it's so widespread and I'm surprised that no one on here knows anyone who does it. That said, the judgement on this thread makes me think that no one would tell you if they did do the occasional line!!

I'm in my 30s, work in the creative industries and I can honestly say that 90% of people in my social circle do cocaine recreationally. I lived in London for 10 years before moving to a small but trendy town in Kent where everyone is still doing coke. I don't know anyone that has a 'habit' - it really is just for parties/events. I have dabbled in the past, but doubt I will again now I'm pregnant with my first.

Eggshausted · 30/05/2021 09:29

Another way you can spot users is with those who touch their nose an awful lot. Both DH and I did it for a couple of years a decade or so ago. It really irritates the lining of your nose and you can’t help but keep touching the outside of your nose to try and relieve it. We will be watching tv sometimes and see a presenter continually touching or wrinkling their nose, and both say out loud ‘Coke’. I work in TV and media and the awards programmes I have been to where every toilet cubicle had people visiting in pairs.... And you would be suprised the amount of ‘wholesome’ presenters who regularly stuff £50 up their nose...

MrsHerculePoirot · 30/05/2021 09:30

I’ve never tried it and having had to watch a video about how it is made and what goes in it during a cover lesson recently I’m relieved... bleach, gasoline, salt, acid... 😱😱😱

That’s before even thinking about the impact of trafficking and county lines etc...

EmeraldShamrock · 30/05/2021 09:39

I think most experiment in college and move on.
During my coke days we danced in the mc wannabe type celebrity places, there was many mc users and C/B list celebrities spending big money.
It was rife and on offer to anyone at after parties.
I'm sure most stopped after graduation.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 30/05/2021 09:46

I should imagine they are the only ones that can afford it! Well them and the rich and famous. Coke is not cheap especially if you develop a habit for it.

Roodicus21 · 30/05/2021 10:04

I've come across it in a nice little middle class village i used to live in. Head teachers, solicitors, engineers all snorting Coke and other drugs. Wouldn't think it to see them in their day role.

SoLongSister · 30/05/2021 10:13

I live and grew up in London. I only know one person who uses Coke and she has been very into drugs all her life.

She's never offered me any and I've been out with her loads over the years.
