To be really surprised at the amount of “naice” middle class people who apparantly do coke?

I see this on mumsnet often that coke use is rife in middle class circles. I’ve never been offered coke on a night out, or seen any of my friends do it: and none of them have ever mentioned doing it.

Aibu to be so naive not to realise it is so widespread

@Chihuahuacat

I’ve never come across it (Manchester) but have heard it’s much more commonplace in London compared to the rest of the country (from friends that live in London)
I worked and played hard in the City for 20 years - never come across it. Hard drinking culture but no one ever offered me a line. Nor have I ever seen anyone take it - other than a builder in the local pub, who came out of the loos with powder all over his hooter, but he's so not middle class!
Jellykat · 29/05/2021 22:53

Guess it depends on what sort of circles you move in, or whether you're just not tuned into whats going on around you.. but i've seen this as common practice for the last 30 years and not shocking.
However its never been my drug of choice, most people become arrogant arseholes on it.

FlyingPandas · 29/05/2021 22:54

I've never been offered coke either but am very aware that it's a thing amongst the 'cool set' at our school. Dinner parties amongst the naice thin beautiful yummy mummies, where the coke comes out once they've all pretended to eat something, are most definitely a thing.

I am neither cool enough, thin enough or beautiful enough to be part of this elite group so I'm not really surprised that I've never been offered any Grin

mibbelucieachwell · 29/05/2021 22:54

DS says that lots of students he knows in London do coke. He thinks it's despicable to buy coke given its likely source and a right waste of money.

HumunaHey · 29/05/2021 22:57

@ShoutingBirb

I'm a 37 yo boring data analyst. Wouldn't say no to a line if I came across a nice dealer tbh Grin

Me and DH used to enjoy a weekend a month with a bottle of prosecco.

Pathetic.
Fallenmadonnawiththebigboobies · 29/05/2021 23:01

I don’t but know lots of school parents do. MDMA apparently quite the thing at the moment too - middle class London neighbourhood.

hibbledibble · 29/05/2021 23:02

Never done it or been offered it. None of my friends or colleagues do it either that I'm aware. I'm in London too.

I'm not sure where this perception comes from that it's so common. It's definitely not in my experience.

PurpleFlower1983 · 29/05/2021 23:04

One friend in my social circle does it on a night out but I don’t know anyone else these days.

Yellowcrockpot · 29/05/2021 23:08

As PP says, MDMA back on the rise in these circles now. People are getting bored of coke and going for something more of a party drug, after all these lockdown months.

Cocaine is rife, and if you have an anti drugs stance or seem like you would, or it's obvious you wouldn't be interested in taking it, why would you know whose doing it or not?

I know people in very good careers who are regularly using. Teachers. Medical professionals etc.

I also know these people would never dream of letting on to certain other people, colleagues, parents etc - but they will actively be taking cocaine whilst in the company of people who don't know.

As a PP said, once you know the signs. They're usually easy to spot. I would say the main one is being overly chatty and totally agree with being able to stay up all night/evening and drink, without seemingly being horrendously drunk.

hedgehogger1 · 29/05/2021 23:10

Terrible trade that causes so much misery. People who do it must be beyond selfish. There are other ways to have fun without the massive human impact.

MilduraS · 29/05/2021 23:11

I suspect it's more widely used than people admit. DH and I do it together at home every few months. We order online using the dark web and it comes by post. Nobody in our social circles knows and if we were ever offered some on a night out we'd say no (we wouldn't enjoy it on a night out). I don't think anybody would ever guess we did it.

Lemonwoe · 29/05/2021 23:13

My naivety is really showing now. I have no idea what MDMA is! Off to google

Yep
Lemonwoe · 29/05/2021 23:15

Ah... it’s Ecstasy. Another drug I’ve never done. A woman I worked with lost her brother to it: iirc the horrific thing was that if his friends had told medics that he had taken it, he was most likely to have lived.

Rollmopsrule · 29/05/2021 23:15

I know a few people that do it. Professional middle class types. I wouldn't touch it because through work I've come across people in their 30s after they've had a heart attack because of coke.

MsTSwift · 29/05/2021 23:15

Never done it never would would think less of anyone that did. Seems a scummy thing to do supporting that trade. Not used in our social group that I’m aware of anyway.

onemouseplace · 29/05/2021 23:16

Up and coming turning middle class London neighbourhood. Generally a bit going round at parties, but not in an especially obvious way. A lot of people I know used to indulge at uni/ in their 20s/30s and aren't on it every weekend by any means, but wouldn't say no if some came their way when they were out.

SavageBeauty73 · 29/05/2021 23:16

I live in North London and most people I know takes drugs. Late 40's. All professions. I don't as my ex husband is an addict. I'm always surprised when I meet people who don't take coke or mdma

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 29/05/2021 23:21

I agree, drug dealing is heavily linked to sex trafficking, money laundering, violent crime etc and I'm surprised so many MNers admit to it, when in other threads they will denounce people using prostitutes or be horrified if someone got spoken to rudely and will be told to call 101

I used to work in sales and in my particular sales industry the use of cocaine is very, very common. I was in the extreme minority in the company that I worked for as I never use it, and never have done. The managers of our branch were the biggest users of it, closely followed by some of the sales reps.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 29/05/2021 23:24

@Thecatsawinner

The minute you our use the naice i think that you are a twat
Bet the OP is crying into her pillow after reading this 🤣🤣🤣

Also this, it can be taken quite discreetly and quickly too. As a couple PP said, there's also alot of people who do it at home, on an evening, over dinner, drinks etc. It's not always big parties, people going out etc.

In fact from what I know, it's more likely to be taken by the middle class, dinner, drinks, night out, home afterwards for more drinks & cocaine.

Or open a bottle of wine, or a few, after dinner on the weekend, and do a few lines at home.

In the case of the home takers, why would anyone else ever know.

I've also known of some very intelligent and hard working dealers, in otherwise professional jobs.

Cocaine really does cross the "classes", more so than any other drug - ie. If someone offered a harder drug around, they would be absolutely viewed differently. Cocaine is socially more acceptable, if you move in circles that use.

nancy75 · 29/05/2021 23:31

Pre kids I don’t think I had any friends that didn’t do it regularly (or any number of other drugs) as we’ve got older/had kids I’ve definitely grown out of it & most of my pre kid friends have too.
The newer ‘mum’ friends I know think a wild night out is a virgin pina colada, I keep my past life very quiet!

littlepattilou · 29/05/2021 23:32

@Lemonwoe Sorry, you lost me at NAICE. Hmm
