Can't deal with the rain

Countrygirl2021 · 21/05/2021 07:41

Trivial yes but actually genuinely getting me down. At the risk of sounding pathetic, I'm really affected by the weather and light. I use a Lumi light box alarm clock to wake me up as I struggle to wake in the dark and I find myself so much happier in the summer.

Our family are really outdoorsy. Im most definitely not a lie in bed and watch TV type.

I can't cope with the lack of spring and constant rain. I've just walked the dogs and felt genuinely sad and frustrated that it's unrelenting. We live rurally so I have all the waterproofs so I wasn't wet but it's so I pleasant. I dread taking them out and it's normally my special time. My kitchen and boot room are caked in mud from kids and dogs. I'm washing two dog towels a day and I'm one step from buying the chickens wellies. We are still going out walking but honestly I can't spend another weekend not able to do the garden and being stuck indoors.

I know it's a first world problem and on the scheme of things really unimportant but it's really affecting my mood that I can't take any more rain and cold weather.

@ChangePart1

YANBU to feel the way you do, that must be awful.

I’m the opposite in that I absolutely love rainy, wet, cold dark weather and thrive over winter. I want the wet days to continue as long as possible as I really can’t stand a long hot summer. So while there are some people who are hating all of this rain there are others relishing it! We’re all different.

Are you me? This is exactly how I feel. I’m loving it...
YellowScallion · 21/05/2021 20:21

I don't understand what there is to love about wet weather? I'm presuming that those people who say they love it aren't actually doing anything outside in it?

I prefer going for walks in wet weather. Love the smell of the rain, how the water looks on the ground, the feel of drizzle on my face. I just wrap the toddler up on one of those puddle suits and wellies and off we go.

It’s hard to explain exactly what I love about wet weather, but it’s a deep thing. You know when you wake up and it’s raining and you can hear the wind howling outside and it’s still dark despite being past sunrise and you know you’re gonna be driving to work with your windscreen wipers on and stepping out into a puddle? That moment when I wake and realise it’s chucking it down just fills my heart with joy and puts me in a good mood for the day. I just adore it, always have. My mum did too.

ChangePart1 · 21/05/2021 20:47

I can understand why people don’t like it and prefer hot dry weather though, even if I don’t feel that way. But people who hate the wet cold weather do usually seem to be unable to imagine how anyone else could enjoy it.

catlovingdoctor · 21/05/2021 20:48

Not just you. It makes me feel very down and frustrated.

doritodiva · 21/05/2021 20:48

I've not long had a baby and want to try and lose a bit of weight and go walking. It's just not worth the effort going out in this horrible weather.

Branleuse · 21/05/2021 20:52

i feel your pain. Its a miserable spring this year. My windows are currently rattling like mad. I have the heating on in my house and a jacket. I felt like crying on the dog walk earlier as the wind was just getting to me. I hate winter

mygee · 21/05/2021 20:53

I can't stand this weather. Makes me feel so cross and frustrated because rain just makes everything so much more difficult!

OverTheRubicon · 21/05/2021 20:56

@ChangePart1 I think the people saying they’re fine with the weather are just saying they’re fine with the weather. Covid and the pandemic has been very hard on me as a new parent, with health issues. But the wet rainy weather really boosts my mood, I love it. We’re all different and it’s not universal to love the heat, and that’s okay

That wasn't my point though - I personally don't mind rain either, normally, nor do I love heat. But for many people, such as those with multiple small children who have now spent a lot of time cooped up indoors for the best part of a year, punctuated only by long muddy walks around local parks, the logistics of more and more weeks doing the same when it's meant to be spring and reopening is extremely depressing. Even more so for those who've booked an expensive May half term week away in the UK.

That's why I found it annoying to have lots of people saying how you need to be positive or they like the rain. I'd like it too, if I could curl up with a book! But I'm alone with 3 small DCs, one with SEN, who need lots of exercise not to bounce off the walls, and this weather is driving us all nuts. I'm sure there are lots of others in different but similar situations, and people should appreciate it's not just about how it is right now, but the year we've all had first.

I had to go out and rescue the dog this morning after the Wendy house blew over and trapped him behind the shed. The wind was so strong it blew my dressing gown over my head! I was so cross I shouted "Fuck this fucking weather in the fucking arse!". Then looked up to see the neighbours teenage sons watching me from the window Blush

ChangePart1 · 21/05/2021 21:03

That’s fair @OverTheRubicon. And I agree it’s inappropriate and insensitive for people to say that because they don’t mind the weather others who do mind it should just shut up or have some perspective or whatever. I can see why someone might be more beaten down by the rain than usual off the back of a really shit year, especially when for a lot of this year we’ve only been able to do things outdoors, which isn’t appealing if you hate the cold!

cissyandbessy · 22/05/2021 11:50

Glad to join in having a weather moan. Finally got organised in time for sowing loads of seeds and now anything that's been planted out looks bedraggled, my peonies have snapped off after their first blooms in 3 years and my selfish neighbours started their extension yesterday. So noise till 10.30 pm last night and drilling from 9am this morning. Am on the sofa with the dog eating snacks and not doing any jobs I need to do which a bit of sun would give me energy for. All grey and rubbish at mo.

This has made me smile. Not because of your misfortune but your reaction to it Grin

I had a similar incident with the boiler which is in the outhouse and shouted "I fucking hate you you old unreliable piece of fucking shit" and slammed the door and then realised the lady next door heard me and probably assumed I was shouting at dp Grin

It somehow made me feel slightly better though.

Bluntness100 · 22/05/2021 12:51

I had to go and clean the patios off this morning, took me about ninety mins and there was nearly a bin bag full of leaves, moss and shit I collected.

All blown off in thr last couple of days from the hard wind and torrential rain we have had as we are surrounded by trees. There was so so much of it I honestly couldn’t quite believe it.

We’ve leaves and branches down all over the garden so they need to be collected next. Proper pita.

Darbs76 · 22/05/2021 12:54

It’s affecting my mood too, just sick of it

@crazyspaniellady

I used to feel like you, as of course rain is unpleasant, but it helped me to change how I thought about it. This was inspired by an italian colleague of mine and she made the point of “but the rain is the reason this country is so green and beautiful”, she says that in her opinion, while the weather they get in italy is delightfully warm and sunny, things tend to get very dry and dull because of this (obviously there are green parts of Italy) and detracts slightly from the natural beauty. She really changed the way I look at or think about rain. Yes while it may be unpleasant so be smacked in the face with driving rain that we seem to get a lot of, without it we wouldn’t have the gorgeous green fields, trees and wonderful wild flowers that are abundant in our countryside. I’ll put up with some rain for that 🙂

It’s the wind I hate, wind makes everything shit.

That's funny because I had and Italian colleague who just refused to go out at all if it was raining. I suppose you can do that if it doesn't rain often. I'm fine in light rain, but the rain today is pretty awful so I'm really debating whether to go somewhere or not. If I don't I'll feel bad by the evening, but if I do, I'll get wet even with a coat and umbrella. How much of a twat would I look like going to the shops in waterproof trousers?

Follow an aerobics video on YouTube. (or just wait till the weather's better).
Geamhradh · 22/05/2021 16:06

Rome has more rainfall per year than most of the UK.
When it rains in Italy quite often it's so torrential that streets get flooded, there are landslips and you literally can't go out into the street because you'd be up to your knees.
There may be more days with rain in the UK, but it doesn't stop all daily life going on.

Geamhradh · 22/05/2021 16:08

Milan has more than Manchester, and Naples has more than much of Europe.

CarlottaValdez · 22/05/2021 16:24

Milan has more than Manchester

I don’t think this is right. I just googled it and Milan has 83 days on average and Manchester 140. So significantly more rainy days!

Derrymum123 · 22/05/2021 16:25

I feel your pain. For me it is driving in the rain. The windscreen bloody wipers seem to mock me. I can't stand them scraping the bloody glass with that bloody squeaky sneering noise. As for the rain,I think it waits for me to do my laundry and sticks two fingers up at me . I love a sunny day but unfortunately where I live it's pretty much guaranteed to rain 90% of the year.

ScreamingMeMe · 22/05/2021 16:28

It's not the rain or the temperature per se for me, it's the gloom and lack of light. I've ordereda SAD lamp, can't take much more of this.

Cm/inches, Milan is much wetter. It's something I take pleasure in showing my (Italian) students when they go on about it "always" raining in the UK. As I said, the UK has more "days with rain" but when it rains here, you are literally unable to go out of the house.
Brainwave89 · 22/05/2021 16:38

I hear you OP. I recognise that weather has an impact on my mood, and I notice this particularly with light. Constant rain and dullness is not what I would expect in Spring, and it is getting me down to.... roll on the Summer.
