Can't deal with the rain

Countrygirl2021 · 21/05/2021 07:41

Trivial yes but actually genuinely getting me down. At the risk of sounding pathetic, I'm really affected by the weather and light. I use a Lumi light box alarm clock to wake me up as I struggle to wake in the dark and I find myself so much happier in the summer.

Our family are really outdoorsy. Im most definitely not a lie in bed and watch TV type.

I can't cope with the lack of spring and constant rain. I've just walked the dogs and felt genuinely sad and frustrated that it's unrelenting. We live rurally so I have all the waterproofs so I wasn't wet but it's so I pleasant. I dread taking them out and it's normally my special time. My kitchen and boot room are caked in mud from kids and dogs. I'm washing two dog towels a day and I'm one step from buying the chickens wellies. We are still going out walking but honestly I can't spend another weekend not able to do the garden and being stuck indoors.

I know it's a first world problem and on the scheme of things really unimportant but it's really affecting my mood that I can't take any more rain and cold weather.

YANBU! We bought a trailer tent a few weeks ago and I'm resigning myself to the fact we may not actually be able to use it THIS YEAR if this carries on (I don't do camping in shit weather). Have cracked out my winter hat and waterproof trousers again today, my horse is stood in her field miserable and piss wet through (has got a rug on!), all my garden furniture has blown down the garden, my beautiful flowers that have just bloomed have been killed by the wind. I'm pale and fucking fed up. Currently have got 6 days off which I've been looking forward to, but I'm literally sat in bed eating biscuits.

lynsey91 · 21/05/2021 14:34

@ChangePart1

YANBU to feel the way you do, that must be awful.

I’m the opposite in that I absolutely love rainy, wet, cold dark weather and thrive over winter. I want the wet days to continue as long as possible as I really can’t stand a long hot summer. So while there are some people who are hating all of this rain there are others relishing it! We’re all different.

When do we ever get a long hot summer?

I get that some people don't like the heat but honestly how much heat do we get in the UK?

We get months and months of cold, wet and wind. Two days of sun and people moan.

I am absolutely sick sick sick of the f*ing rain and wind. My plants have been destroyed, the grass is up to my knees and I am fed up with retrieving everything that gets blown all round the garden.

I am also totally sick of walking my 2 very hairy dogs in the rain twice a day. An hour of walking and then over 2 hours of drying each time.

Hot weather : Sweating immediately once you get out the shower or bath, not being able to sleep that well, next door having a loud bbq , insects getting on my food when I'm trying to eat ' al fresco' , sunburn because I was made fair skinned that goes red and peels off, having to have my horrible feet on display in uncomfortable footwear or letting them in sweat in trainers..
only up side for me is getting the washing dry outside. The rest is hell in a heatwave.

This weather : just plain miserable. Wet, mud, wet, mud, more mud, cold, mud .....
the80sweregreat · 21/05/2021 15:31

Yes, I can understand why people hate the rain and cold. I live in the south East so if it's hot it's very hot and uncomfortable: I appreciate that the whole of the UK is different and some do not get much of a summer at all.
I am just not good with heat personally and miserable while everyone else is out soaking it up and laying out in it like lizards!!

ChangePart1 · 21/05/2021 15:43

@OohKittens

I'm the opposite, I love the dark, wind and rain. I would love to live somewhere that is like this all the time. The past two days I've been so happy.
Same ❤️ When I’m struggling during heat and the summer I try remember others are enjoying it and we can’t all love the weather all of the time. And look forward to the dark rainy cold weather returning :)
skybluee · 21/05/2021 16:18

People are affected by different things and find different things difficult.

I can cope on very little money, try to live on e.g. £159 for the last 10 days of the month, go without things I'd like, not be able to do anything - and not bat an eyelid whereas some else might get upset at that.

I cannot cope as easily with the weather being like this after such an awful winter (especially of not feeling well).

It's all well and good to say about people being outdoorsy and yes, I was in the past, but if you cannot walk much and need to sit, it really is not pleasant trying to sit out somewhere when it's e.g. 12C and drizzling.

Compare that to early mornings of bright blue sky, a sun-filled day, and the possibilities open up massively. Spending the day outside. Eating outside. Sitting under a tree. Being able to go to a park, sit and watch the animals and birds. So yep, it does make a difference and I don't think it's a little thing. Of course if what you love is indoor activities then yes maybe it doesn't make as much of a difference but people have vastly different preferences and things they find fun and nice.

In the past, when I was 100% healthy and fit then yes, it was more manageable but that doesn't mean I wouldn't understand that for some people it wasn't.

So no, OP, you're not being unreasonable.

I wonder if we have become spoilt with such good springs and early summers over the past few years.

I hope it picks up for both of us soon :)

DynamoKev · 21/05/2021 16:22

I feel sorry for people who get so upset by a bit of rain in the UK.

I am very lucky in that it honestly doesn't bother me - in fact extreme heat (over 29c) and constant bright sunshine makes me uncomfortable.

We do live in a country with temperate, but unpredictable weather and I prefer that to boring predictablity.

Magicpaintbrush · 21/05/2021 16:24

This weather is making me feel stabby. Last year we had a mini heat wave in May - we watched an old episode of Springwatch from May 2020 and they were going on about how hot it was. How things change!

We are supposed to be having an outdoor get together on Sunday, the whole family in the same place for the first time in over a year, but we have cold and rain predicted and are now unsure if we can do it as there are too many of us to meet indoors. This shitty weather is getting on my very last nerve.

Sillawithans · 21/05/2021 16:28

I love it! Dreading the summer

Not sure any of us moaning about the rain AND cold (it's like winter) are saying we want it to be over 29c.

I certainly don't like very hot weather but, to be honest, I prefer it to rain, rain and wind, more rain, more wind, more rain and wind and freezing bloody cold when it is almost June

sunshinepunch · 21/05/2021 16:37

I've got to say, I adore the rain. Having lived in Australia for a while you realise how incredible and precious water is. Once you've spent a night trying to sleep in near 40 degree temp with no fan or aircon and just the dulcet hum of mozzies to keep you company, how can you not love it.

Rain on a tin roof at night ❤❤❤

Brings life and as one poster said, the reason Europe/ the UK is ten thousand shares of green.

Spend just one walk thinking positive and about the lovely reasons water/rain is so good for us.

Summer ain't far away anyway.

Zzelda · 21/05/2021 16:40

I remember only too vividly the time around three years ago when it began to be extremely hot in mid May and continued till somewhere around the end of July. It was absolutely hateful. I'll take the current weather over that any time.

Saucy99 · 21/05/2021 16:48

Well if it makes your feel better, my electricity bill I gonna be steep this month. Weather flipped from 15 three weeks ago, to 22 last week to 30 today. Central Spain. Fantastic. Seriously though, England is alway wet an cold so it can't be a surprise

MsTSwift · 21/05/2021 16:51

Got to the point where it’s almost not worth an English person having summer clothes🙁. We are mostly through May I am still in jeans jumpers and warm slippers. So what 3 months of warmth if we’re lucky? I have every sympathy with retirees who bugger off to Spain

I don't want to spend even 1 walk thinking about the lovely rain thank you.

As I said, an hour of walking my 2 dogs means 2 hours minimum of drying them. I am sick sick sick of doing that.

As for summer not being far away well I don't know whether to laugh or cry. It's a month until the longest day and all we have had so far is absolutely shit weather.

Pretty sure all the wildlife is not happy about it and plants certainly aren't. The ones not killed by the frost into May have now been flooded

Lockheart · 21/05/2021 17:09

When do we ever get a long hot summer?

@lynsey91 your memory is very short. Last year was unusually warm from February through to August / September. We had multiple heatwaves. I know covid meant we couldn't go anywhere but still.

The last 3 or 4 years we have had very warm summers.

Vintagevixen · 21/05/2021 17:13

YANBU - I have a scaffolding up to paint the front of my house which obviously can't be done in the rain and cold. Job is now three weeks late starting.

Also roofer was supposed to climb up and look at my dodgy gutters but 60 mph wind scuppered that too!

I just want my works done and my house looking lovely in it's new pastel pink colour, my tiles and gutters fixed!!!! Bastarding weather is preventing all of it (did get my windows in though phew.)

We certainly did not have a good summer where I live in the Midlands.

We had a week of very hot weather and the rest was mixed. We had our heating on in June and some of July. August wasn't great either.

I don't call the last 3 or 4 years very warm summers.

sunshinepunch · 21/05/2021 17:16

Ok.....I think a little positivity would go a long way

They weren't long, hot summers. Fairly brief heatwaves and some decent "ordinary" summer weather.

Plus plenty of miserable weather for the rest of the year.

MadMadMadamMim · 21/05/2021 17:20

Absolutely agree with all here. I've got long Covid and I'm permanently exhausted. One of the things I managed to do even in Jan/Feb was on any day where there was a bit of sunshine or bright weather I wrapped myself in blankets and sat out on the patio to get daylight.

May just feels like it's pissed it down almost every day and I am fed up. There is no joy in sitting on my patio in the rain. I really need to get outside.

sunshinepunch · 21/05/2021 17:21

What exactly do you want us to do/say??

belinda789 · 21/05/2021 17:22

@ linsey91
When I first got Star my Afghan hound, I realised that when I walked him in the rain, even though I towel dried him he was still damp three days later. I had an old red cagoule and he wore that for walks after that. Hood over his ears – everything dry with just his eyes and nose poking out. No boots though.

OverTheRubicon · 21/05/2021 17:26

I agree, and think that people saying they're fine, appreciate the greenness etc aren't also appreciating the impact that the past year of lockdowns and covid has also had on some of us.

In the past I quite liked a reason to spend a week indoors catching up on books and snuggles with DCs. After the last year, I feel we've spent so much time cooped in, I work all day in the house, spend the weekends in the house, try to keep 3 young DCs entertained with the same toys and books they've been playing with endlessly, and with friends not allowed for playdates or anyone going out... It's pretty grim.

Bring on the dry weather and the reopening.
