Can't deal with the rain

Countrygirl2021 · 21/05/2021 07:41

Trivial yes but actually genuinely getting me down. At the risk of sounding pathetic, I'm really affected by the weather and light. I use a Lumi light box alarm clock to wake me up as I struggle to wake in the dark and I find myself so much happier in the summer.

Our family are really outdoorsy. Im most definitely not a lie in bed and watch TV type.

I can't cope with the lack of spring and constant rain. I've just walked the dogs and felt genuinely sad and frustrated that it's unrelenting. We live rurally so I have all the waterproofs so I wasn't wet but it's so I pleasant. I dread taking them out and it's normally my special time. My kitchen and boot room are caked in mud from kids and dogs. I'm washing two dog towels a day and I'm one step from buying the chickens wellies. We are still going out walking but honestly I can't spend another weekend not able to do the garden and being stuck indoors.

I know it's a first world problem and on the scheme of things really unimportant but it's really affecting my mood that I can't take any more rain and cold weather.

See I'm normally a winter person who moans when too hot. I've learnt that I have my limits with cold weather.

Countrygirl2021 · 21/05/2021 09:27

We've just had an April with unusually light rainfall. Can we really not cope with three weeks of intermittently wet weather after that?

No because April was alarmingly freezing for the time of year and killed things on the garden with its evil extended frostiness and this was given way to a sodden May.

I can tell you it's barely intermittent where I live. I like a bit of rain here and there. Saves me hours of watering and I appreciate the lush green countryside it provides. However, this requiring an ark sort of weather.

Will look into chicken wellies for you all Grin

I get SAD too so I understand. Unfortunately we are just starting to see climate change play out and it is likely going to get worse. Erratic weather, more extreme weather events. Yet most people are still living life without adjusting their behaviour with this in mind. Driving petrol cars, burning fossil fuels, eating meat, cutting down trees etc. I’d say this is just the beginning. I myself love sunshine but if we are dealing with extremes, I do prefer wind and rain to drought and forest fires. I love our green, tree-filled land and hope it survives what is to come.

Lockheart · 21/05/2021 09:29

April was colder than usual.

However we had quite a dry winter following a very dry year. Our rainfall has been lower than average for quite a while.

This month's rain is higher than average.

It's rubbish for us, but we do need it.

I wasn't best pleased with the wind and rain keeping me up all night though!

MeanderingGently · 21/05/2021 09:30

For goodness sake, it's only water! Human beings are water-washable!
And in the bigger scheme of things, very minor....there's a pandemic going on, people are dying, there are wars, oppression and global environmental disaster and you're not liking the rain?!!

Of course you can deal with the rain. And for those of us who hate hot summers and scorching sunshine, it's a nice May for a change.

As for being outdoors, the rain doesn't stop you being outdoors. I have never understood why the UK disappears as soon as it's wet. I've lived in Scandinavian countries where they are really outdoorsy, there's no such thing as an indoors "wet playtime" and mothers sit outside, chatting, in the pouring rain in Autumn while well-suited and booted children play in the wet, making channels for the water to run down and mud-castles.

Honestly, it's just weather, and quite manageable....

Hallyup6 · 21/05/2021 09:30

I get you. I have issues where I'm affected by light and it makes me feel awful. We've got a rearranged holiday booked for next week and I already didn't want to go, but I checked the weather forecast yesterday and it's predicted to piss it down every day. I just want some sunshine and places to be open without all this social distancing bullshit.

LindainLockdown · 21/05/2021 09:40

How dare you be miserable about the weather OP, don't you know there is a pandemic going on?!

FFS, YANBU at all, of course the relenting misery of days of rain and wind throughout so called spring and summer has an impact on mood. It is totally shit and I really hope it gets better soon as thankfully it is meant to do. I also say that as someone who has moaned on here about it being too hot in the past.

MyBiscuitspread · 21/05/2021 09:40

I hate it too and hate all the weeds growing and not being able to enjoy my garden properly.
What I do to cope is to imagine what would have happened if we had this weather last year. Imagine the scary news on telly, the general uncertainty of everything, the doom and gloom in combination with my panic attacks and shitty weather on top of that. Thank God we had sunny days and most people sitting in their gardens barbecuing. I honestly don't know how I would have coped otherwise.

This year everything is more positive we just have to wait a bit longer for spring/summer and we'll be fine.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 21/05/2021 09:40

I feel the same. Got really frustrated taking my boots and coat off after the school run this morning. I'd just like to be able to go out in sandals and without a waterproof jacket sometime soon.

CallieJones · 21/05/2021 09:49

April was the coldest since 1922 and now we have this shit called May with the coldest May Day Bank holiday in 43 years
Yes and they said on the radio it's the wettest May since the 60s.

CallieJones · 21/05/2021 09:51

For goodness sake, it's only water! Human beings are water-washable!
Wow angry! Grin We're only having a bit of a moan. Are you OK?

Tal45 · 21/05/2021 10:01

We were so spoilt last year - we had so many BBQ's spent the whole spring in the garden. This year has been horrendous - but it does look like better weather is finally coming next week.

candycane222 · 21/05/2021 10:03

Ugh agree, it's so dismal. My weight loss which was crawling at overweight snails pace has completely ground to a halt as my exercise is reduced to nipping out quickly in a mac (with two jumpers on underneath). And our heating packed up about 6 weeks ago and we thought 'no rush well be fine' so we have had to dig out an electric heater...

However I will say that the dreadful hay fever I had in that dry dry April, has completely vanished, so I'm hanging on to that little silver lining!

candycane222 · 21/05/2021 10:04

Good point mybiscuit ! Smile

ineedaholidayandwine · 21/05/2021 10:07

Same here OP, bloody fed up of getting sticky and warm wearing my raincoat which also has a hood big enough for 2 heads so all it does is flap in the wind, useless bastard thing.
My garden is like a bog, the fields surrounding us are too muddy for walking, my daughter is fed up of spending weekends stuck inside and gets restless and grumpy.
It's making me feel flat, miserable and tired :-(

Muminabun · 21/05/2021 10:08

I hear you op. I want to eat salad but it’s too bloody cold. Just dragged toddler and dogs around the block utter chore. Fed up of winter coat and headband and I say that as a person who doesn’t mind winter and rain particularly. It’s nearly June fgs I know this is England but blessed gods.......

SoupDragon · 21/05/2021 10:11

Of course you can deal with the rain. And for those of us who hate hot summers and scorching sunshine, it's a nice May for a change.

Bet you'll be here whinging about the heat in July (or whenever it cruelly gets warm)

northbacchus · 21/05/2021 10:15

YANBU OP! Have you tried one of those SAD light therapy lamps? Apparently, they do really work, might be worth a try as a temporary fix until the weather has changed!

HeadNorth · 21/05/2021 10:25

I want to wear my summer clothes!!! Foot stomp.

May is frequently one of our loveliest months in Scotland. This is beyond dire - and comes on top of an icy cold and at times snowy April.

I have had enough. Gah!

JudgeJ · 21/05/2021 10:34

Is there any normal phenomenon that does upset people on MN? The OP said it 'sounds pathetic', sums it up perfectly, it's unseasonal weather, get over it! I recall last Summer when some were unable to cope woith the heat.

Miljea · 21/05/2021 10:43

I live in the very south of England, where we haven't had such endlessly poor weather as many you have had, thankfully, but I feel your pain.

Right now we're right in the firing line of this wind, it's blowing a hooley out there. And if there's one thing I dislike more than continuous rain, it's squally wind and rain.

Until yesterday, we were getting periods of torrential rain, followed by blue sky and some sun, with some magnificent cloud-scapes, but it's been how April weather should be, not late May. We got to sit in the hot tub every evening since setting it up last Sunday. Then the wind and rain arrived....

I so, so miss a villa in Spain for a fortnight. That's our 'fix', though I am aware how dry and dusty it makes everything. I know you need rain to make everything green-and-pleasant, but it's not so great when every trip out is so unpleasant!

Tell you what, though, a conservatory helps!

Ventiicedcoffee · 21/05/2021 10:49

I'm not remotely outdoorsy! But I'm fucking sick of it. I live in a city and the most nature I get is a pootle in the park with a coffee. But I feel ya!

Thing is with urban living is it works best if you can walk in between places. Also with covid I'd prefer to sit outdoors if possible still. But what I'm doing is staying in and the legging it between places if I go out!

Urgh it's fucking mid May!

Ventiicedcoffee · 21/05/2021 10:50

Also thought of the chickens in wellies made me smile!

tweettweettweettweet · 21/05/2021 10:58

I don't usually mind the rain, but my goodness, this is relentless. It's really getting me down.

GirlCrush · 21/05/2021 10:59

@MeanderingGently

You sound so bitter and angry! So out of proportion to this thread

I love gardening but it’s so difficult,at work plants blowing over and breaking are our biggest problem as well as low footfall. (Garden centre job)

Winds last night have brought down a neighbours fence
