Do you iron all your kids clothes?

Had a 'heated' discussion with DM because she doesn't like the fact that I dont iron my DC2's clothes.

I used to iron DC1's as I had plenty of time on my hands but now with another child, a dog and a partner I just don't see it as an important job anymore.

Their clothes look fine, most things are tumbled and then hung straight up so they don't even look like they need an iron, never have I looked at my kids and thought oh god you can't tell I haven't ironed that and never has anybody beside DM ever mentioned it to me either.

We literally don't iron anything anymore, let alone kids clothes. Bed linen goes to laundry company, and I can't remember the last time either of us ironed something.

Anonymous48 · 20/05/2021 18:51

I have never ironed any of my kids' clothes in their lives! I own an iron, but if it gets used once every five years that's a lot. There's just no reason to.

Bear2014 · 20/05/2021 18:52

I iron school t-shirts as they look like shit otherwise. Nothing else though.

Newmumatlast · 20/05/2021 18:55

I barely have enough time for sufficient rest and quality time with the family so am I hell ironing with what time I have lol

LST · 20/05/2021 18:57

@GintyMcGinty

Yes I iron everything.

It looks much nicer and feels nicer to wear.

I hate seeing un-ironed clothes it looks like you can't be bothered.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

* Those that iron everything, when do you do it? There's just 3 of use but I can't see when I would fit it into my life?*

^Really? My weekly ironing takes less than 20 minutes. 20 minutes a week. It isn’t hard or time consuming is it Hmm

LST · 20/05/2021 18:58

@Puffalicious

I find the MN stock response of "I iron nothing" completely bizarre. I don't know anyone IRL who doesn't iron. I'd look a right state with formal work wear not ironed/ DCs uniform definitely needs it, as so their tshirts and hoodies (unless sports material). I draw the line at rugby/ sports kit. Bedding is also a joy fresh off the line and ironed. Out of all chores i like it the best: on my own keeping half an eye on a TV programme all for me/ a podcast- magic.

Saying all that if you don't want to iron, don't iron. It's your bloody decision, tell DM to keep her nose out.

The only people I know who iron is my mum and nan

also: what is an iron? the thing to melt hama beads?

YeOldeTurnip · 20/05/2021 19:00

@PremierSmeage

I don't iron anything. I don't own an iron.
Same here. Don't own one, get along just fine.
GintyMcGinty · 20/05/2021 19:00

I can pretty much iron everything whilst watching a Netflix episode of something. Quite easy.

FontyMcFontface · 20/05/2021 19:01

I don’t have an iron.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 20/05/2021 19:02

I use fabric softener and a tumble drier. Most of my childrens clothing comprises soft fabric eg Jersey, which comes out of the tumble drier completely soft and crease free, it's hard to see what ironing would add.

The only person I know who irons a lot buys a lot of woven cotton shirts etc and also over stuffs & over dried things in her tumble drier, so everything comes out very crumpled.

She also once commented that she didnt know where I found the time to iron everything. I didn't enlighten her that I havent touched the iron in 3 years since I last wore a shirt to work.

HeeHawSeeSaw · 20/05/2021 19:02

I iron my 3 yo dd's preschool uniforms and any of her clothes that look like they need ironing. Hardly iron any of my own.

Volcanoexplorer · 20/05/2021 19:03

Yes, I iron pretty much everything except underwear and pjs. I wish I didn’t care, but I hate I in ironed so I do it. I can definitely tell when something hasn’t been ironed.

starfishy · 20/05/2021 19:04

People that don't iron, any tips on how to get things smoother out of the wash? I don't have a tumble dryer so just hang things on a rack after washing.
(Also don't iron anything but some things we wear do look a bit creased).

LST · 20/05/2021 19:04

My nan (who irons hankies) asked what ironing water I used on the dcs clothes. I just laughed and said I'd need to find the iron first!

Ozymandias101 · 20/05/2021 19:05

Ironing makes clothes flat, but people are mostly round. Completely illogical activity.

Volcanoexplorer · 20/05/2021 19:05

Sorry, that should be un-ironed clothes.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 20/05/2021 19:06

Also body heat relaxes the fibres in clothing. Even if you do iron something, it doesn't stay looking freshly iron beyond about 30 minutes of wear. By then you've leaned against a chair and crumpled the back etc etc

Oblomov21 · 20/05/2021 19:06

I iron 5 x Dh's work shirts, 5 x ds1 school shirts, and 5 x ds2. So 15, per week. Plus jeans and a few very hard bits.

cupsofcoffee · 20/05/2021 19:08

How do you know? Do you ask everyone just to make sure?

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 20/05/2021 19:09

Starfish

Water softener or add vinegar to the wash, and use fabric conditioner. If you don't have a tumble drier, shake things thoroughly as you take them from the machine and spread them properly on the rack so they are as flat and smooth as possible. Also make clothing choices that don't require ironing - avoid linen blends and high thread count cotton as these crease terribly, go for soft drapey Jersey. Also buy beaded tops for formal wear.

Wow, ironing dhs shirts and the school stuff takes me over 1 hour. You must be super speedy at ironing or totally misjudging the actual time it takes!

Exactly why I don't bother. You honestly end up looking exactly the same as those who don't iron after a short amount of time e.g after your commute which is why I'm always baffled by those who say they can tell who doesn't iron. Confused
