Do you iron all your kids clothes?

Had a 'heated' discussion with DM because she doesn't like the fact that I dont iron my DC2's clothes.

I used to iron DC1's as I had plenty of time on my hands but now with another child, a dog and a partner I just don't see it as an important job anymore.

Their clothes look fine, most things are tumbled and then hung straight up so they don't even look like they need an iron, never have I looked at my kids and thought oh god you can't tell I haven't ironed that and never has anybody beside DM ever mentioned it to me either.

None of my daughter's clothes have ever been ironed.

AlwaysLatte · 20/05/2021 17:23

Of the children's clothes, my husband irons school trousers, school shirts, and I think that's pretty much it - the odd smart shirt but they're not worn much. I hang everything up on the line or Sheila maid if it's raining, and fold them as I take them off so they don't get creased. We have three quarters of a laundry basket only for all the ironing every Sunday.

PremierSmeage · 20/05/2021 17:23

@lazee

No iron in my house! We cope just fine. Tumble and shake and hang. Job done

Exactly.

MIL once offered to buy be an iron. I said no thank you, I don't iron. Unless DH would like to do some ironing. She wasn't impressed.

NerrSnerr · 20/05/2021 17:24

The only things that get ironed in our house are Hama beads.

PremierSmeage · 20/05/2021 17:25

Oh I remember when I last ironed something. 12 years ago for a job interview. I borrowed an iron from neighbour.

AlwaysLatte · 20/05/2021 17:25

I used to iron absolutely everything. I'd take it off the line and bundle it into a basket, and iron the lot - all the baby vests, etc. I stopped when they were about 3 and 5 and realised the ironing pile was getting ridiculous..

CeibaTree · 20/05/2021 17:25

I have never ironed any of the DC's clothes.

MiddlesexGirl · 20/05/2021 17:26

I iron pretty much everything. Have tried all manner of straight out of the tumble dryer folding etc etc but can always tell what hasn't been ironed.

If you can't see it or it doesn't bother you though then that's absolutely fine too. No need to justify your choices to anyone.

MyGoMargot · 20/05/2021 17:27

I don’t iron unless I absolutely have to - eg shirts

Teen DC can iron their own if they like

passmethemilk · 20/05/2021 17:27

I don't iron most things.
Couldn't tell you the last time it did.
I did buy a steamer for cardigans as I find the iron burns them but again I haven't used that in ages either!

Coatz · 20/05/2021 17:27

My DM is actually appalled that I cant spare the time to do it, I mean hats off to those who can find the time and energy but I just can't 😂
I used to have to iron an ex's shirts for work and he'd get dressed then sit at the table for breakfast and they'd crease where he leaned against the chair and I'd think what an absolute waste of my time that was!

Iron ALL their clothes?? Quite the opposite.

snotaproblem · 20/05/2021 17:29

School uniform and party dresses yes

ProcrastinationIsMySuperPower · 20/05/2021 17:31

My husband does all the ironing in this house! Once a week, he does it all while binge watching something on Netflix or whatever. He irons most things, but not underwear or anything.
I only iron in an absolute emergency.

flashylamp · 20/05/2021 17:31

If they look fine how does she know you don't iron?

Natsku · 20/05/2021 17:32

The only clothes of my children that I iron are DS's suits and shirts he wears on Fridays and one pair of trousers that need ironing.

I iron all my own clothes because they feel nicer but the children don't notice or care about the difference.

Coatz · 20/05/2021 17:33

@Bimblybomeyelash well not all that would be mad 😂 my nan used to iron everything including underwear, hankies, socks. She had 3 kids so I dont honestly know how she did it!

I can (just about) understand that some people dont iron but its amusing that people think others cant tell when clothes aren't ironed. People aren't going to be rude enough to comment on it usually...

OP we make time for the things we consider important. If it's not important to you, don't waste energy discussing it with your DM.

I agree with her though Grin

Mintjulia · 20/05/2021 17:38

I iron DS's Tshirts & school shirts but I prefer them like that. It takes literally 10 seconds per shirt. I don't own a tumble dryer.

But nothing else. Everything else is ok straight out of the airing cupboard.

NorthDowns · 20/05/2021 17:40

Everything gets ironed in this house. We’d look a right mess if I didn’t.

NameChange74567 · 20/05/2021 17:41

I iron DD school uniform. Her skirts and dresses have pleats in them that look awful if they're not ironed. Don't bother with anything else though.

Mytupenceworth · 20/05/2021 17:41

Yes I do, I even iron my bed linen!

999Alex · 20/05/2021 17:41

I do if they need it but I hate doing it. If they look fine out tumble dryer then I don't bother.

Most of it my girls clothes doesn't need done. I've noticed a lot of the t shirts I've bought for summer though all need ironed. Maybe because I'm not tumble drying as don't want them to shrink.

I did a pile of them last week on my lunch break as I currently wfh. I usually just iron as it needs done same with my own clothes iron when I want to wear it.

Coatz · 20/05/2021 17:47

@flashylamp that's a good point!
When I say their clothes look fine I mean they dont look they have just been screwed up into a ball all night and then put on to wear 😂 to the trained eye I'm sure you can tell I havent ironed them but to me they look fine.
She has also asked me if I iron them so perhaps she wasnt sure but now she knows haha.

DappledThings · 20/05/2021 17:48

Yes, I iron everything but because I like to and I prefer how everything folds neatly in drawers when it's ironed. I've never looked at anyone of any age and noticed if their clothes are ironed or not.

I don't think you can really tell that all our clothes are ironed, I care more about it being part of the process of putting clothes away than how they look worn!
