Do you iron all your kids clothes?

Coatz · 20/05/2021 17:08

Had a 'heated' discussion with DM because she doesn't like the fact that I dont iron my DC2's clothes.

I used to iron DC1's as I had plenty of time on my hands but now with another child, a dog and a partner I just don't see it as an important job anymore.

Their clothes look fine, most things are tumbled and then hung straight up so they don't even look like they need an iron, never have I looked at my kids and thought oh god you can't tell I haven't ironed that and never has anybody beside DM ever mentioned it to me either.

I have found my people. Life is far too short for ironing.

Thisisjaaam · 20/05/2021 22:25

I don’t iron anything

FindingMeno · 20/05/2021 22:28

I'm not ironing clothes for them to end up smooshed around bedroom floors, as they inevitably do.
I was a very staunch ironer once and it took a long time to wean off it! But I'm glad I don't bother now.

AliTheMinx · 20/05/2021 22:32

Yes, I do - and weirdly I only started ironing when DS was born! My mum is an avid ironer...

Nonbibblebibble · 20/05/2021 22:57

Can’t remember the last time we ironed anything. And when DS starts high school and wears proper shirts I’ll be showing him how to do them himself...

Sparklybanana · 20/05/2021 23:03

The iron is feeling sad and unloved in the back of the cupboard since DH no longer irons his shirts with home working.
Ironing is just generally a waste of life. No one on their death bed has ever regretted not ironing more.

FarTooMuchWashing · 20/05/2021 23:25

I have 2 blouses and 1 dress that need to be ironed. They get worn once a year! Other than that, I iron nothing.

stressfuljune · 20/05/2021 23:47

Not used an iron for ten years

stressfuljune · 20/05/2021 23:48

@NerrSnerr

The only things that get ironed in our house are Hama beads.

My mum is similarly appalled that I don’t iron.

I specifically bought non-iron shirts for when my boys started secondary school, they’re amazing.

I also refuse to hand wash all dishes etc. when we’re at her house and have had a meal for 7 when she had a dishwasher Hmm

DH will occasionally iron a shirt for a specific reason - his dad is ex army and taught him how to do it so he’s in charge of any other ironing as well Grin

OloBo · 20/05/2021 23:54

You can iron kid’s clothes?!

EmeraldShamrock · 20/05/2021 23:56

It depends. I like a neat look if it is crinkle materials yes, I'll iron school uniform, tracksuit, shine shoes. Grin
They wear mostly non iron clothes if hung well or flattened when straight out of the dryer they're fine.
I didn't when I'd 2 and ds was under 3 its my new netflix hobby.

Thistles24 · 21/05/2021 00:20

Yes, I iron all toddler DC clothes. It’s all jeans, hoodies and cotton T-shirts, and just looks better ironed. To me it’s obvious who has ironed clothes and who doesn’t . I just prefer the look of ironed ones. The teens wear nylon sports gear all the time, so only iron their school uniforms. Iron my own scrubs and whatever I wear too, and DH work shirts and hoodies/ jeans.
Only iron 1 set of bedlinen, it looks horrific unless it’s pressed. The rest I don’t bother with.

SteveBuscemisRheumyEye · 21/05/2021 09:12

I'm actually going to iron this weekend! I do think clothes look better and they sit better in drawers etc.

What I have found it that it can take ages to get wrinkles out, and sometimes I iron and although the material is flat, I can see where the wrinkles are? Why does that happen?!

EmeraldShamrock · 21/05/2021 09:17

What I have found it that it can take ages to get wrinkles out, When this happens I'd throw it back it for a rinse you're giving yourself extra work battling creased wrinkles.
and sometimes I iron and although the material is flat, I can see where the wrinkles are? Why does that happen?!
Not sure. Give clothes a good shake from the washing machine first, if it comes out of the machine creased it is harder.
Don't iron small things fold them with the Marie kundo fold they stay lovely in the drawer. I use to throw them in and have to search MK folding method makes them easy to see.

If it's important to her, tell her which days you'll be dropping the basket of ironing off to her.

Otherwise, just say, " I'm not going to change my position, life's too short to argue about stuff like this, let's just agree to differ, and drop this subject"

OrangeRug · 21/05/2021 10:03

I don't even own an iron. I just smooth it out on the floor if it looks creased Grin I occasionally give one of DDs dresses to my Mum to iron as she doesn't mind.

Blankspace101 · 21/05/2021 10:15

No but my ironing lady does.

CadburyCake · 21/05/2021 10:20

Never ironed an item of my children’s clothing. Ever. I just don’t buy them clothes that need ironing or that don’t go in the drier. I barely iron anything for adults either.

BashfulClam · 21/05/2021 10:26

I don’t iron and I have never looked at anyone and thought that it’s appalling how creased their clothes are. I don’t have a tumble dryer, if something looks awful unless ironed (like one too I have) I just don’t wear it unfortunately.

BashfulClam · 21/05/2021 10:28

People who iron bed linen, who sees it apart from you. I admit when I was selling my home I ironed the bed to make it look perfect but that was because people were seeing it.

MargaretThursday · 21/05/2021 10:38

What's an iron?

Grin
tentosix · 21/05/2021 10:59

Tell you of course your iron everything, just look at how crisp they are hanging up (from the tumble dryer of course).

Wouldn't waste energy arguing about something so insignificant. I barely iron anything

billy1966 · 21/05/2021 11:13

Not a chance.
They were always finished in the tumble dryer so never needed it.

None of her business.

Why would you listen to ANYONE's opinion on this?

DappledThings · 21/05/2021 11:18

@BashfulClam

I do it for how it feels not how it looks! And how much more neatly it fits in the chest when it's unused. Worth it as far as I'm concerned. Never judged anyone for unironed bedding, it's just a preference
