Do you iron all your kids clothes?

Had a 'heated' discussion with DM because she doesn't like the fact that I dont iron my DC2's clothes.

I used to iron DC1's as I had plenty of time on my hands but now with another child, a dog and a partner I just don't see it as an important job anymore.

Their clothes look fine, most things are tumbled and then hung straight up so they don't even look like they need an iron, never have I looked at my kids and thought oh god you can't tell I haven't ironed that and never has anybody beside DM ever mentioned it to me either.

I actually like ironing, used to iron everything. Now I don't worry so much.

maddening · 21/05/2021 11:51

My husband irons all the clothes, I don't see why he bothers with some eg pyjamas. I iron the bedsheets as it is easier to store and they feel and look nicer, husband doesn't get why I do that.

RubyRedBerry · 21/05/2021 11:58

I didn't realise there was so many none ironers!! I iron all my sons clothes..... I have to iron my own for work anyway so running the iron over a few other things doesn't make much difference. I do it in the bedroom whilst watching TV.

thelongwayhome · 21/05/2021 12:01

Some things need ironing, some don't and aren't even supposed to be ironed. I put some straight on a hanger and hang them from a door handle instead. I certainly don't iron muck-about clothes! School uniform yes, dresses mostly depending on fabric, leggings and vests no, tops and shorts mostly. I only ever iron my work clothes, I live in leggings, lycra jeans and baggy jumpers otherwise which don't need ironing.

mrsfeatherbottom · 21/05/2021 12:07

@NerrSnerr

The only things that get ironed in our house are Hama beads.
Ditto! We even bought a mini ironing board from IKEA just for them!

DH irons the kids' school shirts and his own.

Coatz · 21/05/2021 12:46

@jackiethefart I brought those shirts specifically too, they're amazing 😂

My first DC is a boy but my youngest is a girl so I suppose when she starts school I might have to iron dresses/skirts but I'll try to get away with it if I can!

I had to google Hama beads, I've heard of them but didn't know you had to iron them 😂

I can’t think of a more pointless endeavour than ironing my children’s clothes 😆

woodhill · 21/05/2021 15:48

I think your Dm shouldn't be telling you how to live your life, it's also about boundaries and she is overstepping the mark.

I must admit I was somewhat surprised that neither of my dds iron but that is up to them and they'd tell me to mind my own business

I'm assuming you live in your own home away from your Dm.

If she's so concerned she can the iron stuff for you

sbhydrogen · 21/05/2021 15:59

There's only a few items I like to iron, which are a small collection of jumpers (I hate a creased jumper), a couple of dresses, and preferably my bed linen.

Occasionally I iron my pants and socks for fun, because it is totally unnecessary 😉

FourTeaFallOut · 21/05/2021 16:01

No, I iron uniforms, party clothes and Christmas Day clothes. Everything else gets a shake if it's lucky.

cakeallday · 21/05/2021 16:04

I stopped ironing about five years ago and I'm here to tell you that nothing changed except I got 2-3 hours of my week back Smile

Mrst63 · 21/05/2021 16:04

I generally only iron things if I need to...
But I do always iron my child's school uniform.

optimistic40 · 21/05/2021 18:06

In general life, no. For an occasion I would if needed. I rarely wear anything that needs it either

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 21/05/2021 18:48

I've never ironed my kids' clothes, but I definitely don't do it now. Half the time they never make it from their clean laundry basket into their wardrobes/drawers - they just wear them straight from the clean laundry basket.

TBH I don't even see the creases any more. I'm not sure if I ever did...

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 21/05/2021 18:50

My sister's MIL does like to engage in what we call 'competitive ironing' conversations.

toomuchtooold · 21/05/2021 18:56

Hama beads and for pressing seams while sewing, that's the only time I ever use the iron. DH had a job interview 6 months ago, I ironed him a shirt for that. But for the kids? My god, I dream of a day when I would be bored enough to want to do that...

Looubylou · 21/05/2021 21:21

Everything that's been washed gets ironed - the only exception being bras.

You iron pants and socks?
partofyoupoursoutofme · 22/05/2021 02:59

I don't iron, dh irons his shirts and that's it. My mother irons everything and has moaned about it for as long as I can remember. She hates doing it, but sees it as an essential part of the process. She can't explain why though, so I think it's part of a social standard that doesn't exist for me, a relic from another era.

When she was seriously ill for a couple of months I moved in to look after her, I did her ironing for her and remain convinced it is completely pointless. She won't give it up even though she says it is the bane of her life.

MarmaladeBumpkin · 22/05/2021 03:09

One of our DC asked what the big flat thing tucked behind the washer was the other day. It was the ironing board. We own both board and iron but neither of our 9 and 5 year old kids have seen either in use.

MarmaladeBumpkin · 22/05/2021 03:13

My MIL is also appalled by my lack of caring about whether we iron. But she can't say anything bcos despite being perfectly crease-free she doesn't iron either - she gets FIL to do it.

Yes, dm is a bit like that. I think it is almost a societal pressure from the 20 century like scrubbing your step (not that she ever had to do that) and people thinking you are slovenly perhaps?
carolinesbaby · 22/05/2021 12:23

I don't iron anything.
I moved house a year and a half ago, and still have a small bag of ironing that moved with us. It's a pointless waste of my time.

*exceptions made for certain items for special occasions - DH's shirt to attend a friend's wedding for example.
