I am

Really I do not have the legs for them my legs are on the big side

But I look far worse in mum jeans

I also wear very straight jeans from Gap. I also think some boot leg jeans are flattering but not all are

Shelovesamystery · 22/05/2021 08:17

I used to think that skinnies suited me and were so flattering, couldn't imagine wearing any other style of Jean. But I kept seeing online about how unflattering skinny jeans are (on pretty much every shape) so I reluctantly bought a pair of straight leg and didn't wear skinnies for a month. When I put skinnies on again I looked in the mirror and felt like a sausage, I thought I looked ridiculous. Honestly they are really unflattering, I just didn't realise because I'd been wearing them for so long and was so used to them.

I got rid of my skinnies and have one pair left, in the back of my wardrobe. I wear straight or cigarette legs now, rolled up. Mom jeans just accentuate my mum tum so I've given up on those.

Poppynit · 22/05/2021 09:10

I still wear them, much to the disgust of my 12 year old niece. They're 'really not cool' apparently 🙄

With the shape of my body and how my weight is distributed, I look like a brick if I wear anything other than skinny jeans with an oversized top or jacket. I am NOT buying into the wide leg jeans trend, I just know I will look like a caravan. I don't want to look like a caravan. No offence to all the caravans out there.

That was exactly how I felt when I tried my skinnies on again. They have all gone to charity now.

LunaNorth · 22/05/2021 09:38

I’ve just ordered two new pairs, in grey and blue. They look nice with some tops I have, they’re great in wet weather, and I like them.

I also have boyfriend jeans, flares and straight legs. Which look nice with other tops I have and I can’t wear boots with.

And I have coated skinnies that make me feel like Chrissie Hynde, so I won’t be giving them up any time soon!

Surely they’re just a staple part of the wardrobe that do a job?

AppleSouffle · 22/05/2021 09:41

I have no idea what to wear on a night out if black skinnies are no longer an option? Anyone?

PoppenhuisStories · 22/05/2021 10:01

The fashionable baggy jean is usually teamed with some kind of midrif bearing top so really suits young people better. If you want a more flattering post baby baggy top them that looks pretty horrific teamed with baggy jeans. I think this is why the ‘skinny jeans and a nice top’ combo is such a mum thing.

Looksabitbig · 22/05/2021 10:06

How can mom jeans be mom jeans if all the moms are in skinny jeans?
As I get older I'm more resistant to having things "sold" to me.

EllaPaella · 22/05/2021 10:25

I agree @LunaNorth

Meruem · 22/05/2021 10:38

I personally think that wearing something that doesn’t suit you looks “worse” than wearing something that’s deemed out of fashion. I think if you find a look that works for you and, just as important, is comfortable to wear, then stick with it. Nowadays I go for clothes that will last and that I enjoy wearing. They’re not the height of fashion. But I like them. As a fairly unremarkable 50 something, I doubt anyone is looking to me to be any kind of leader in the fashion stakes!

trancepants · 22/05/2021 10:54

@LittleGwyneth

They're not 'in fashion' they're a staple piece. Saying that skinny jeans are 'out' is like saying that a white t-shirt is out. It's just part of a wardrobe. You're not 'on trend' if you wear skinnies, but you're also not on trend if you wear a black cocktail dress or a navy blue round neck jumper.

I've worked in fashion for years and I find people who actively try to include trends in their wardrobe rather than wearing what appeals to them to be extremely confusing.

How old are you? I remember when skinny jeans started to really come into fashion and most people my age, early-mid 20s, hated them and were scathing about what a horrible, horrible fad they were. Giving us all sausage legs and emphasising our hips without the balance of a straighter leg or ankle flare. Especially when teamed with calf/knee-high boots. There is actually a first season episode of Torchwood where Tosh can read minds and she reads Gwen's mean commentary on her skinny jeans with boots, "Oh, sweetheart, the jeans in the boots thing has really kind of had its day." In 2006.

Skinny jeans have been a 'fashion thing' since the early 2000s but didn't really settle into being any kind of staple until they'd been around for nearly a decade. And once they hit that basic staple stage, being worn by women in their 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s, their days as fashionable were numbered. Girls and women in their teens and 20s don't want to dress like their mothers and grandmothers. So yes, skinnies are still in the shops and will hang around for decades to come because people who have settled into wearing them will continue to wear them. But to young people, they are what your mum wears and wider straight legs, bootcuts, wide-legged and even mom-jeans are what's fashionable. And they'll fall in and out of high fashion for a bit. Eventually become a settled staple that every single one of here will be wearing without giving them a second thought because they are the complete norm. And a few years after that, some different style of jeans, probably skinnies, will roll back around as what the young people wear. And people will be on here asking if it's unreasonable to still wear their bootcuts.

Laundrydragon · 22/05/2021 10:56

I'm a size 12-14 and 5'8 so my skinnies are my BFF, I have no problem with others changing up their looks and having a lovely time at the shops but my DH likes my jeans and I feel nice (also comfy for running around after toddler in rainy parks) so I don't mind looking like a past it mum, because that is what I am Smile

UnculturedSwine · 22/05/2021 11:03

@AppleSouffle what about mom jeans styled like this?

absolutely!

Even someone like Kate Middleton who looks like she could wear anything actually sticks with works best on her. And it clearly works.

AppleSouffle · 22/05/2021 11:07

Uncultured they look amazing on her, and I could aim for that look, but I have 2 issues

  1. a tummy
  2. Inability to walk in heels Grin

“Lovely time at the shops”? “My DH likes my jeans”? “I don’t mind looking like a past it mum, because that’s what I am”??

Honestly, sometimes I think people are posting as part of some fetish.

Mandalay246 · 22/05/2021 11:14

I've never worn them, but if people want to wear them then they should. I'm not in the UK but they still seem to be a thing here - I find it hard to source anything else! Everyone should wear what they feel happy in rather than be a slave to the latest trend.

UnculturedSwine · 22/05/2021 11:19

Apple I’m the same Grin but I’m going to stick to the tucked in V-neck top and a ~ minimal shoe ~ (I read vogue this month, apologies) with the mom jeans and hope for the best!

I totally agree. Straight leg jeans look better on me than skinnies.

lavenderlou · 22/05/2021 11:21

Most of the young girls (teens and 20s) in my Essex town are still on super tight skinnies, usually with lots of rips. There are a few "Mom" jeans but these look dreadful on my physique. I have mix of skinnies, slim, straight leg and bootcut. It's quite nice for there to be more options around.

itsgettingwierd · 22/05/2021 11:23

I wear them. Well actually the jetting style ones but they are cotton and colourful! I love the high waisted jogging s from m and s.

They are selling everywhere so I imagine lots of people are still wearing them. Even not - I'm not changing from mine Grin

itsgettingwierd · 22/05/2021 11:25

Plus they are so versatile!

I can put on a pair and wear with flip flops, boots, trainers or wellies - which in the current climes is pretty much all 4 every day 🤣

tattleandbagels · 22/05/2021 11:27

You have to be pretty skinny to pull off mom jeans. Anyone with a hint of belly hasn't got a chance - and that includes slim women dealing with period-bloating or other problems, it's not an attack against anyone.

GrandDuchessRomanov · 22/05/2021 11:31

I just bought myself a pair of Stan Smith Kermit the Frog trainers which I have been waiting to be issued for ages.

I'm 51 and couldn't give a toss what anyone thinks about what I wear.

AppleSouffle · 22/05/2021 11:47

Uncultured you’ve inspired me to give it a go.. off to google minimal shoes Grin
