I think people should wear what they like. Slim jeans with boots or a longer top is still pretty classic I think and won't really go out of style (and who says you need to be in style?)
That being said, the silhouette they and legging type pants give may start to look dated depending on how you wear them. Really, they were the standard for a really long time compared to most fashion trends, so it's makes sense people were wanting a change - there are only so many ways you can make the same old thing look fresh.
I still wear the skinnies I have around, and I won't get rid of them until they wear out. But I've enjoyed adding some wide legged pants.
I noticed a few people mentioned figuring out what shoes to wear - I remember when skinnies first came in, people had the same problem! Part of it is just getting used to your feet looking different - when we all switched from boot cut, at first it seemed like your feet were giant boats! Boot cut jeans and flares though look pretty good with a chunky heel, or sneakers, or back in the 90s we wore them with Docs.
The wide legged pants that are shorter tend to look good with flats, or flat sneakers like Converse, or sometimes ankle boots. I've seen teens wear them with giant sneakers but I'm not sure most adults could pull that off.
