A couple In Ireland have had quads...Irish child benefits is not means tested AND if you have twins you get 1.5 per child BUT if you have other multiples you get DOUBLE the amount so this couple are taking in 140 x 2 PER CHILD!! That's 1120 in child benefits per month!! 🤣🤣🤣

I also I have to agree with the other posters and think this thread was started to point fingers at the Irish CB system and become frothy and outraged and stir up the usual anti Irish sentiment on MN. For a country that was treated horrifically by an oppressive regime for centuries and only 100 years into independence I think Ireland is doing OK. Not perfect by any means.

Greenmarmalade · 16/05/2021 20:45

You would absolutely need help with 4 babies so if there’s no family willing/available, you’d need some part time help at least.

Jellybabiesforbreakfast · 16/05/2021 21:14

What the OP hasn't been clear on is how cutting child benefit would discourage people from having quadruplets.

CornishPastyDownUnder · 16/05/2021 21:26

good for them-it'll be a drop in the ocean as far as raising quads goes-im not sure this was part of their game plan tho @stopthebloodylights so whats with attempting a goady post ??

@quizqueen

Almost 8 billion people on the planet. People need to stop being paid to have children. I vote to abolish all child benefit.
I am assuming you made your parents pay back all the family allowance they got for you?

This is EXTREMELY narrow minded and ignorant! I can’t believe people think like this. Engage your bloody brain a bit!

topwings · 17/05/2021 12:45

*They will also get €300 per child per month in Universal Credit, plus €400 per month if both adults are unable to work and their rent paid. So thankfully the €1120 won't be their only benefits.

Also, child benefit is paid 4 weekly so the monthly amount will be marginally more but not by much*

@SkodaKodiaq where did you get these figures?

Ireland doesn't have universal credit.

I presume the €800 per month you refer to is Jobseekers Allowance - that is for people that are out of work but they must be actively looking for work.

Child benefit is paid monthly, not every 4 weeks.

Pickledpenguin · 17/05/2021 13:12

Does it say somewhere that they rent instead of having a mortgage and did anywhere say that they both had given up work for these babies or is this just something someone pulled out of their arses, a bit like the figures @SkodaKodiaq seems to have done.

As @topwings states above we do not get universal credit in Ireland. YOu are either getting jobseekers allowance because you lost your job and are actively looking for a job or you work and claim working family support if you are under a certain amount of earnings. Child benefit is a monthly payment here paid on the first Tuesday of the month, not weekly and is not classed as a 'benefit' in the social welfare benefits meaning as anyone in Ireland can claim it no matter what they earn.

Blackberrycream · 17/05/2021 13:18

This is mean spirited and quite silly.
Firstly, there are not that many families with triplets and higher multiples so it will hardly be a drain on public finances. I can’t see anyone choosing a multiple birth for the benefits!
Secondly, they will need all the help they can get. I don’t think I could cope easily. Could you? The money might ease the situation and that is good as it will help the parents and the children.

Maggiesfarm · 18/05/2021 10:39

They are a middle class couple in their mid thirties with their own home. They had lost some babies before conceiving the quads.

bogoffmda · 18/05/2021 13:12

Maggiesfarm - so the taxpayer should pay them for having DCs.

My BF has triplets - middle class family lost 2 prior to the trips. Both worked - standard 1 year maternity leave and DM back working part time.

Maggiesfarm · 18/05/2021 14:13

I imagine the couple pay tax and will continue to do so.

I'm sorry your friend only got a year on benefit. Ireland does it differently.

NoLeafClover · 18/05/2021 14:27

Again, it shouldn't be a race to the bottom.

There should have been more financial assistance available for your friend and her family, rather than less for this family.
