To not understand what the 'woke' brigade is?

Really confused about what it is

SomewhereInbetween1 · 14/05/2021 17:12

It's what people who aren't aware of world issues use to describe people who are.

Ninkanink · 14/05/2021 17:14

No it really is not.

HTH.

Just had to challenge that ludicrous statement.

Others will be along to explain, I’m sure.

Hohofortherobbers · 14/05/2021 17:16

I understand who they are and I expect it's what older generations always think of the younger generation as attitudes change and people become more tolerant and aware. Why is the word WOKE though? Where did that come from?

Google it.

This thread is really not going to go well. Or was that the intention?

So why is it being talked about in a negative way? Surely we should all be aware of world issues

The "woke brigade" are people you don't agree with, so you call them "woke brigade" as an insult. Using this insult means that you are totally correct and very clever indeed.

BrumBoo · 14/05/2021 17:18

It a person who so 'right on' with social issues, they've lost all ability to use critical thinking skills. Have no ability to have an opinion beyond their very narrow viewpoint, and will shut down discussion if you make any valid point they cannot reasonably argue with.

A woke person tends to be in no way related to their cause, but are a faithful 'ally' (so usually straight and/or white, sad eyes about their privilege which they otherwiseuse to their full advantage). Often found to be causing more harm to a social cause than good. Usually a virtue signaller as well.

Torvean · 14/05/2021 17:18

Its not all world issues. Its specific issues.

Ninkanink · 14/05/2021 17:19

Again that’s entirely incorrect. The woke brigade is anything but tolerant. The generations that are under fire now are the ones who fought, bled and demonstrated against all manner of intolerancea, and agitated fiercely for the freedoms and liberties the woke numpties take for granted.

@GlassBoxSpectacular I dont understand why it wouldnt go down well? Why are people so argumentative :) I googled it but I didnt completely understand - I live abroad and english is not my first language. It just mentioned something about BLM however I do not understand why it is being spoken of negatively

Used by some as the new "political correctness gone mad...."

While some (many) people use it in a derogatory way it actually means being socially aware especially in a racial context. 'Woke' literally means awake. I.e woken up to the issues.

Ninkanink · 14/05/2021 17:20

Above in reply to @Hohofortherobbers.

JaneJeffer · 14/05/2021 17:20

Remember the Political Correctness Gone Mad brigade? Well it's them only worse.

No that’s what ‘woke’ used to mean. It’s not used in that sense now.
FangsForTheMemory · 14/05/2021 17:20

@Ninkanink it is actually. You give yourself away when you can't provide a better definition.

Ninkanink · 14/05/2021 17:21

Better definition than what?

Thank you for this. I think I understand a little better now. I now understand why Woke is spoken of negatively. Can you please use an example? if I am not asking for to much.
  • sorry for my english

It comes from African American dialect: it means being awake to racism. Unfortunately it then got taken over by white progressives to describe themselves and from there it turned into an insult used to mean right on virtue signalling lefties - not a million miles away from how politically correct used to be used. I see how it is a useful word to capture a particular mindset but I try to avoid using it because ultimately it was appropriating a word that was useful to black communities and turning it into an insult which is a bit of a shitty thing to do really.
Ninkanink · 14/05/2021 17:24

And by that I don’t mean to say that people can’t also use it in the original racial discrimination awareness context - of course they can and should if that’s what they want to do. But that’s not what people are referring to when they use the term ‘woke brigade’ or similar.

Anyway it’s friday night so I’m off to chill and enjoy this beautiful evening. 🌷

I am sorry I really do not understand. Which generation is being under fire? What is the problem. I think I am stepping on 'British' problems and so I do not understand. However I am very curious. I read english newspapers and that is where I have heard 'woke' lately which is why I am trying to understand

The "woke brigade" are the people who fought for women's rights, LGBTQ+ rights, the rights of people of colour, disability rights etc and who see those battles as incomplete.

The people calling them woke are often people who thought they were progressive in the 80s because they wouldn't have spat at a gay couple or if they were men, wouldn't have called a woman a bitch. And now the goalposts have moved and they've having to face up to their own bigotry, as we fight harder for justice in a way that implicated them, they lash out with phrases like "the woke brigade".

lakesidelife · 14/05/2021 17:27

Uncritical virtue signaling is how I think of it when the term is being used as an insult.

It doesn't relate to how the word was originally used.
