Really confused about what it is

KaleSlayer · 14/05/2021 18:01

Ffs. Really!? Anyone would think this could be a massive wind up thread. Not me, obviously

Most of them are. Always a ‘confused’ or similar self described OP. 🙄

HelpfulBelle · 14/05/2021 18:05

When I was a kid, Vic and Bob did a sketch called Action, Image, Exchange where they 'raised awareness about the situation in South Africa by leafleting in the local area, because it's really getting on my tit-end!' Grin

That's what woke is.

Whythesadface · 14/05/2021 18:06

Woke has changed it used to mean all the right things.
Clean water, good schools, wage equality, that the colour of someones skin doesn't matter. This was and is good,

But when people try to force lies onto people and call them phobic for saying the truth, that;s woke now.

GlassBoxSpectacular · 14/05/2021 18:09

@Violaaa

My understanding is that older generations use it to put down the younger people who seek change and want more tolerance and acceptance.

The older generation think they are right and it's a bit like when they all hated the gays in the 80s but young people didn't or when the older generations didn't like Indians or black people.

Young people are generally more tolerant but older generations look at them in a condescending way and call them woke.

On MN woke means anyone who accepts and is kind to trans people

And where do you stand on the bigotry of sweeping and unsubstantiated ageism, oh wise one?
SomewhereInbetween1 · 14/05/2021 18:10

@aprillfestival

The "woke brigade" are the people who fought for women's rights, LGBTQ+ rights, the rights of people of colour, disability rights etc and who see those battles as incomplete.

The people calling them woke are often people who thought they were progressive in the 80s because they wouldn't have spat at a gay couple or if they were men, wouldn't have called a woman a bitch. And now the goalposts have moved and they've having to face up to their own bigotry, as we fight harder for justice in a way that implicated them, they lash out with phrases like "the woke brigade".

If I could like your comment, I would 🙌

I disagree. I'm young and my 'pet' woke issue is the normalisation of porn and the promotion of sex work, especially amongst female university students. For example, on my local University networking/alumni page, a recent post about job security and the economy had men writing (highly liked) posts about how lucky women are to be able to do well on OnlyFans if they lost their job while men don't have the same options. Scroll down the comments and there are then people telling others to DM them if they're looking for mentorship or if anyone wants a link to check their page out. It's all being advertised as something empowering for women.

I think it's all actually very regressive and tend to classify people who subscribe to such ideas as 'woke'. This is just an example, but it's an ideological divide, not a generational one.

Eyjafjallajokulldottir · 14/05/2021 18:11

@ssd

Woke is one if many words i see all the time on mn and i have no clue what it means. See also cis and gender critical. And if you ask you get some smart arse ripping the piss. So i dont ask.
Google is a thing, you could maybe try that?
TownTalkJewels · 14/05/2021 18:12

It’s just the same as what people used to call political correctness, really.

The new backlash comes from the tendency of some woke people towards illiberalism and intolerance. The desire to demonise and ‘cancel’ anybody who disagrees with their point of view is unfortunate and undermines many causes, IMO.

mainsfed · 14/05/2021 18:13

@KaleSlayer

‘Kind’ meaning letting them into women’s spaces. The fact that this is very much unkind to women doesn’t matter of course. How depressing.

Well said
Ayla182 · 14/05/2021 18:17

@lakesidelife

Changing the name of a Christmas festival to a winter festival so people of other faiths aren't offended is often given as an example of political correctness.

I'm a little surprised that you are unaware of all of these terms OP.

Wow! That is ridiculous.. However it makes me happy to see how far England has come. I live abroad that is why I am unaware and to be honest we are still fighting for freedom of speech :) one word against our president and you could be in prison. I am hoping we could make it as far as England - I wouldnt mind the ridiculousness

I don't even know where to START with THIS ^ post. Confused

The fact that the individual who composed this post is someone who walks amongst us all, is terrifying. What a load of absolute fukkin rot!

What an ageist, racist, bigoted, and disgusting post! Hmm

Ayla182 · 14/05/2021 18:22

@GappyValley

The woke brigade are the sorts of people who hear a safety announcement on a train that starts with the guard saying ‘hello ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, please can I have your attention’ and their immediate thought is ‘omg that is sooooo offensive to anyone who is trans or non binary, I must complain right away instead of listening’

And the rest of the woke brigade are the people who read about it on Twitter and call for an immediate boycott of the railway and want the CEO and the guard to be sacked.

They are the people who see tampons in the supermarket under a sign for ‘feminine hygiene’ and start a petition to get it changed juuuuuust in case someone reads it and feels ‘attacked’ or ‘triggered’ or ‘offended’, and also make sure the petition calls for the manager of the shop to be sacked for letting this ‘literal violence’ happen

Yes this is exactly my reason for asking. I read about the train comment - was confused. I checked online and saw 'woke' being discussed. I was actually suprised the railway appologised. Like I said where I live we are fighting for basic rights so it seems very strange that england is this 'advanced'

Ohhhhh, the faux innocence! Hmm

'oooooooooh what does goady mean?'

WTF is wrong with you? Are you bored or something? This thread is pathetic - and so are your posts on it.

Ayla182 · 14/05/2021 18:25

@ikeepseeingit

I see people using 'woke' in the same (slightly less offensive) way as people saying 'Karen' or 'ok boomer'. Most of the time 'woke' is used to discredit a person arguing for things such as trans women are women or 'overly' left ideals. It's very similar to calling them snowflakes really. I've never heard of any young person calling themselves 'woke' unless they were from California. Certainly not from the UK at least.

Personally, I normally agree with ' the woke brigade'. I have seen it go too far, but not as often as I dislike what the right-wing is doing. I don't really agree with anyone using any of the terms I mentioned above, I think they're all methods of silencing what can be a very good argument, and pretty much just a cop-out. It's very hard to have a discussion with someone that you know just dislikes the core of who you are, and it's not productive to throw the terms around like they're insults. You could just actually explain your point.

I dont even want to ask what 'karen' or 'ok bloomer' is. Or 'snowflakes' wow so many words. Are these common words in the UK? or Europe?

You are a strange person indeed to get so angry over this. I would just stay away from something that makes me so angry but then again we are all different.

@Ayla182. Christ don't ask here, you'll get the eye rollers telling you to use Google

Ayla182 · 14/05/2021 18:30

I am actually laughing at some of the comments! Why are people so intolerant of other people asking questions or wanting to learn new things. I promise you if you talk to people around the world and use these words they will not understand! We dont have political correctness - that concept is not even born where I live as we dont have the right to discuss most things. I guess these are all normal words everyone in england knows which is why some people are getting angry

OP posts:
GlassBoxSpectacular · 14/05/2021 18:31

Are these common words in the UK? or Europe?

Where exactly is the ‘abroad’ in which you live, where you speak impressively fluent English and have access to the British press, yet are baffled by so many English terms, and where criticising the president gets you imprisoned?

It sounds like a land of many contrasts.

FlyingNorth · 14/05/2021 18:31

The older generation think they are right and it's a bit like when they all hated the gays in the 80s but young people didn't

Um, weren't the older generation young in the 80s? Many of us were marching/campaigning in support of women, students, anti-nukes and many other issues. No-one thought to include anti-ageism back then. Maybe today's young people should take note.
