To not understand what the 'woke' brigade is?

Really confused about what it is

OP posts:
CoalTit · 14/05/2021 17:45

I see how it is a useful word to capture a particular mindset but I try to avoid using it because ultimately it was appropriating a word that was useful to black communities and turning it into an insult which is a bit of a shitty thing to do really.
Yes, this! We need a succinct way to the describe the thoughtless, self-righteous bullying and harrassment that attaches itself to social justice movements, but it's a terrible shame to take an expression created by oppressed people and twist it the way "woke" has been perverted and twisted.

Cassilis · 14/05/2021 17:45

@Ninkanink

No it really is not.

HTH.

Just had to challenge that ludicrous statement.

Others will be along to explain, I’m sure.

You don’t even know what it is so educate yourself. HTH.

@aprillfestival

The "woke brigade" are the people who fought for women's rights, LGBTQ+ rights, the rights of people of colour, disability rights etc and who see those battles as incomplete.

The people calling them woke are often people who thought they were progressive in the 80s because they wouldn't have spat at a gay couple or if they were men, wouldn't have called a woman a bitch. And now the goalposts have moved and they've having to face up to their own bigotry, as we fight harder for justice in a way that implicated them, they lash out with phrases like "the woke brigade".

Nah, I think the woke brigade are the ones that put a meme on facebook about those issues and then thought they'd changed the world and gave themselves a really big pat on the back.
BrumBoo · 14/05/2021 17:45

@ssd

Woke is one if many words i see all the time on mn and i have no clue what it means. See also cis and gender critical. And if you ask you get some smart arse ripping the piss. So i dont ask.
@ssd

Cis means 'to align with the gender/sex you were born. It is an empty a prefix as you can get. It apparently means the opposite of trans, except when you are not meant to acknowledge a person is trans. So 'trans women are women' but 'women women are cis women'. Also see 'non-binary' for completely meaningless labels.

Gender critical means that one is critical of gender as a concept. People like myself don't acknowledge gender exists, beyond people's personal beliefs that I generally respect as their beliefs. That makes one a bigot, despite no one actually being able to explain what gender is. Like literally cannot give it a definition.

@Cassilis really do stop with the ‘educate yourself’ nonsense.

@Violaaa it’s not a generational thing. It has to do with ideology.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 14/05/2021 17:47

This is an interesting article about how the word has morphed into caricature after big brands began jumping on the "woke" bandwagon.

midgedude · 14/05/2021 17:47

I understood it means "awake to discrimination "

And that people started using it about themselves

And then others questioned how narrow minded some people who claimed that label really were

Hence it's used in other circles to mean " immature and naive " ( at best)

lakesidelife · 14/05/2021 17:47

@aprillfestival virtue signaling is a a type of moral grandstanding.
You are a lucky person indeed if you have not run into this in real life.

The Cambridge Dictionary has this virtue signaling explanation:

Virtue signallingg^ is the popularr^ modernn^ habitt^ of indicatingg^ that one has virtuee^ merelyy^ by expressingg^ disgustt^ or favourr^ for certainn^ politicall^ ideass^ or culturall^ happeningss^.

Hushabyelullaby · 14/05/2021 17:47

This has made me realise I'm at an age where I don't understand all the terminology the younger generation use....my God I've turned into my parents 😱

Cassilis · 14/05/2021 17:47

What do you expect when you post ‘No it isn’t. HTH’. A ludicrous response.

Okay but you won't find many young people with the same ideology as those calling people woke

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 14/05/2021 17:48

@Violaaa

My understanding is that older generations use it to put down the younger people who seek change and want more tolerance and acceptance.

The older generation think they are right and it's a bit like when they all hated the gays in the 80s but young people didn't or when the older generations didn't like Indians or black people.

Young people are generally more tolerant but older generations look at them in a condescending way and call them woke.

On MN woke means anyone who accepts and is kind to trans people

‘They all hated the gays’???!!!!

That’s one of the most nakedly ageist posts I have seen on here. Take a look in the mirror before you describe other people as prejudiced or intolerant.

BrumBoo · 14/05/2021 17:49

On MN woke means anyone who accepts and is kind to trans people

Ah, this pretence again. No it doesn’t. 'Woke' people tend to think they're 'being kind' (how fucking patronising) to trans people by being completely willing to throw women's rights and sex based rights out the window. Most 'woke' people won't even recognise that the value of sex is as equal to (if not more so in women's cases) to gender.

Biscuit

I’ll await my deletion being as someone got deleted for only posting this emoji a few days ago.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 14/05/2021 17:50

People who take offence on behalf of others.

Like the winterval example of not wanting to offend other faiths when the other faiths were perfectly happy for Christians to get on with things.

People who call themselves allies then damage the cause they are supposedly supporting by taking extreme positions vis a non-trans person taking a trans woman to court for transphobia. Confused

GappyValley · 14/05/2021 17:51

The woke brigade are the sorts of people who hear a safety announcement on a train that starts with the guard saying ‘hello ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, please can I have your attention’ and their immediate thought is ‘omg that is sooooo offensive to anyone who is trans or non binary, I must complain right away instead of listening’

And the rest of the woke brigade are the people who read about it on Twitter and call for an immediate boycott of the railway and want the CEO and the guard to be sacked.

They are the people who see tampons in the supermarket under a sign for ‘feminine hygiene’ and start a petition to get it changed juuuuuust in case someone reads it and feels ‘attacked’ or ‘triggered’ or ‘offended’, and also make sure the petition calls for the manager of the shop to be sacked for letting this ‘literal violence’ happen

Balaur · 14/05/2021 17:53

Ffs. Really!? Anyone would think this could be a massive wind up thread. Not me, obviously Hmm

Ninkanink · 14/05/2021 17:53

@Cassilis I expect nothing. Why would I expect anything? Confused The first answer was utter rubbish and I quite rightly said so.

Ninkanink · 14/05/2021 17:54

@Balaur yes quite! And I haven’t had my glass of wine yet so I got sucked in! Never mind, I’ll have beer and popcorn instead! 🍻

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 14/05/2021 17:54

On MN woke means anyone who accepts and is kind to trans people
That makes me woke, then. I have had trans people stay overnight in my house. Like them both, would never be horrible to them.

Doesn't stop me being GC, though, and objecting to some of the nuttier woke declarations, and despising the doxxing and bullying and cancelling that so many of the woke seem to enjoy doing all over social media.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 14/05/2021 17:55

So casual ageism is fine then. You are aware that age is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act? You cannot claim any form of tolerance when you stereotype a group on the basis of a protected characteristic.
BrumBoo · 14/05/2021 17:55

I've posted this before, it's a few months old now but it still generally covers how problematic the 'woke' are in their idealisms, and often hypocrisy.

midgedude · 14/05/2021 17:57

I think CBA that you have highlighted a wonderful example of what I meant by the narrow mindedness of the woke

KaleSlayer · 14/05/2021 17:58

On MN woke means anyone who accepts and is kind to trans people

‘Kind’ meaning letting them into women’s spaces. The fact that this is very much unkind to women doesn’t matter of course. How depressing.
