Really confused about what it is

@GlassBoxSpectacular

Are these common words in the UK? or Europe?

Where exactly is the ‘abroad’ in which you live, where you speak impressively fluent English and have access to the British press, yet are baffled by so many English terms, and where criticising the president gets you imprisoned?

It sounds like a land of many contrasts.

I live in Turkey - close to the border of Syria. People here can speak english.. well. We can read and write english but speaking can be more difficult. I went to a private school and actually go to the UK (and other countries) for holidays. I am also an english teacher at the same private school I studied in now which helps. I read english newspapers (bbc) as here in Turkey our press is closely monitored and the information we are given can be far from the truth. I would love to ask more information on news but looking at this thread I think it would make people more angry - for example the whole issue with the two countries at war - we are just given one side of the story and it is so intresting to read the english new which writes a completely different thing to what we hear here

Ostentatious virtue signallers, sometimes with limited critical thinking skills. They use 'Educate yourself' a lot which is hilariously ironic. Usually it means 'If you disagree with me you know nothing' rather than 'You have researched this extensively and reached a different conclusion and I respect that.' Tend to panic when challenged and summon their winged monkey brigade to bay for the blood of non-compliers. Utterly totalitarian and utterly certain that their position is THE LAW, even when it isn't. ESPECIALLY when it isn't.

and yes here critising our president does get you to jail! our prisons are filled with journalists, politicians and civilians who are prisons for what they think or write.

wow so many different words. Yes I think lots of people have problems with others who think different to them and they assume the other knows nothing.

@BrumBoo

It a person who so 'right on' with social issues, they've lost all ability to use critical thinking skills. Have no ability to have an opinion beyond their very narrow viewpoint, and will shut down discussion if you make any valid point they cannot reasonably argue with.

A woke person tends to be in no way related to their cause, but are a faithful 'ally' (so usually straight and/or white, sad eyes about their privilege which they otherwiseuse to their full advantage). Often found to be causing more harm to a social cause than good. Usually a virtue signaller as well.

This.
littlepattilou · 14/05/2021 18:40

@Ayla182

You are a strange person indeed to get so angry over this. I would just stay away from something that makes me so angry but then again we are all different.

Thank you for your advice oh wise, all-knowing oracle.

That's put me firmly in my place. I shall stay away from all that makes me angry. I am now a new person. 😇

for those who think I am lying (very strange)

Please search

It's a thing made up for the Right's imaginary culture wars.

They think there is a Woke Elite controlling major important decisions all around the world, when what it means is 'there's some vocal left wing people on social media and on campuses', and that some cultural institutions are doing radical things like shock discussing the history of slavery in museums and country houses. This apparently amounts to a huge attack on Our Culture, where in fact people who very much don't care about making a fair world for people who aren't able-bodied, straight, white, middle-class-and-upwards men are still very much calling the shots in everything significant thank you very much.

This thread is a great way to learn language better, to understand how people interpret certain phrases , what influences how people hear your tone of voice!

@Violaaa

My understanding is that older generations use it to put down the younger people who seek change and want more tolerance and acceptance.

The older generation think they are right and it's a bit like when they all hated the gays in the 80s but young people didn't or when the older generations didn't like Indians or black people.

Young people are generally more tolerant but older generations look at them in a condescending way and call them woke.

On MN woke means anyone who accepts and is kind to trans people

Well, ageism aside, you do realise that the 'young people' in the 80s are now the 'older generation' now don't you? Confused
CatsArePeople · 14/05/2021 18:53

"so open-minded that brains have fallen out" is my favourite description.
Woke Elite would be out-of touch Hollywood stars rallying for all the popular causes from their private jets and luxury yachts.

tentosix · 14/05/2021 19:03

Its people telling you that trans men are women if they say so and can therefore use women's changing rooms.

In other words people living with an unreal world outlook.

You can have good attitudes to climate change, world poverty, equality and so on and still keep your feet on the ground.

DdraigGoch · 14/05/2021 19:09

@aprillfestival

The "woke brigade" are the people who fought for women's rights, LGBTQ+ rights, the rights of people of colour, disability rights etc and who see those battles as incomplete.

The people calling them woke are often people who thought they were progressive in the 80s because they wouldn't have spat at a gay couple or if they were men, wouldn't have called a woman a bitch. And now the goalposts have moved and they've having to face up to their own bigotry, as we fight harder for justice in a way that implicated them, they lash out with phrases like "the woke brigade".

The "woke brigade" are doing their utmost to squash women's rights.
lakesidelife · 14/05/2021 19:10

I did wonder if you were in Turkey OP.
I absolutely loved Istanbul when I visited.

I dont even want to ask what 'karen' or 'ok bloomer' is. Or 'snowflakes' wow so many words. Are these common words in the UK? or Europe?

These words originate more in the USA rather than the UK or Europe.

Karen was originally a word for a middle aged white women who were rude to black shop staff in the USA.
It has since turned into a way of trying to get any middle aged white woman to stop talking about pretty much anything.

Ok, Boomer. Is a put down phrase for people of the baby boomer (postwar) generation. It is usually said by young people. It is also often used against any older generation by the younger generations. ( My dc have had to be told several times that their grandparents are boomers not their parents.)

Snowflake is an insult frequently used by people more on the right to describe the younger generations. Suggesting they have an over inflated sense of their own specialness and are emotionally fragile.

DdraigGoch · 14/05/2021 19:12

@lakesidelife

Changing the name of a Christmas festival to a winter festival so people of other faiths aren't offended is often given as an example of political correctness.

I'm a little surprised that you are unaware of all of these terms OP.

More to the point, people of other faiths were never offended by the holding of a Christmas festival in the first place, any renaming was done at the behest of some "ally"
IRelateToViewpointsNotPeople · 14/05/2021 19:16

It shows the ignorance of people who think everyone should know every word because they and their dogs know them.

Some people don't, even if they live here and it's even more likely that those who don't live here [wherever "here" is, where you're so sure everyone has head of these terms] haven't heard of it. Not everyone is a SJW or cares.

OP may or may not be genuine but this whole "IT'S FAUX-NAIVETE IF YOU CLAIM YOU HAVEN'T HEARD OF THIS?!" comment that people tend to post on these threads just makes posters look narrow-minded and insular, not clever.

Your world/circle - no matter how big you think it is - isn't the whole world.

IRelateToViewpointsNotPeople · 14/05/2021 19:20

*heard.

And for the OP, SJW is Social Justice Warrior.

GlassBoxSpectacular · 14/05/2021 19:20

Its people telling you that trans men are women if they say so and can therefore use women's changing rooms.

You’ve got that the wrong way round: transmen are biologically female but identify as male; transwomen are biologically male but identify as female.

IRelateToViewpointsNotPeople · 14/05/2021 19:28

And also, some of these people like to say if you don't live here and understand everything, your English should be terrible.

Well, maybe what they do online is spend time learning English, not the latest political terms and arguments or they speak English where they are or it's one of the languages they speak.

The world is a huge place - so many possibilities.

I mean, critical thinking doesn't stop at politics and social justice.

I am glad you liked Istanbul :) Turkey is a beautiful country its a shame the people running are bringing it downwards by limiting our freedom of speech and thoughts. Also we have issues of racism here. It is terrible.

Thank you for all the words. I feel bad for those named Karen now!

Ahhh snowflake = fragile :) because it melts easily. Very clever.

I still dont understand ok bloomer though

Ok OP.

It is Boomer not bloomer.

"Baby boomer" is a term used to describe a person who was born between 1946 and 1964.

They are the post Second World War generation. Following the end of the war there was a baby boom, meaning a rapid expansion in the number of babies born.
