@TheCountessofFitzdotterel has a fair assessment! It's sad that this term has been taken over when its history is really about staying aware of the impact of structural racism.

Though I don't think I've ever heard of someone describing themselves as woke in its recent context. Ive only really heard it used to try to insult people.

littlepattilou · 14/05/2021 17:28

@BrumBoo

It a person who so 'right on' with social issues, they've lost all ability to use critical thinking skills. Have no ability to have an opinion beyond their very narrow viewpoint, and will shut down discussion if you make any valid point they cannot reasonably argue with.

A woke person tends to be in no way related to their cause, but are a faithful 'ally' (so usually straight and/or white, sad eyes about their privilege which they otherwiseuse to their full advantage). Often found to be causing more harm to a social cause than good. Usually a virtue signaller as well.

This in spades. ^

But then you know EXACTLY what t means @Ayla182

littlepattilou · 14/05/2021 17:29

*what IT means!

itsgettingwierd · 14/05/2021 17:30

I see it as people who want everyone to have so many rights that we can no longer use term we use to.

For example those who want chest feeding, pregnant people etc.

We have to be so careful what we say because we could offend someone. And basically they find offends in anything anyone says.

My opinion is they are a danger to woman's rights.

lakesidelife · 14/05/2021 17:30

Changing the name of a Christmas festival to a winter festival so people of other faiths aren't offended is often given as an example of political correctness.

I'm a little surprised that you are unaware of all of these terms OP.

BrumBoo · 14/05/2021 17:31

The people calling them woke are often people who thought they were progressive in the 80s because they wouldn't have spat at a gay couple or if they were men, wouldn't have called a woman a bitch. And now the goalposts have moved and they've having to face up to their own bigotry, as we fight harder for justice in a way that implicated them, they lash out with phrases like "the woke brigade".

And it's this kind of bullshit why people call them 'the woke brigade'. Think their special brand of 'progressive' is the only truly righteous way, and anyone who can see flaws in the Brave New World idealisms are bigots. No sense of irony of their own prejudice.

itsgettingwierd · 14/05/2021 17:31

@Ninkanink

I see how it is a useful word to capture a particular mindset but I try to avoid using it because ultimately it was appropriating a word that was useful to black communities and turning it into an insult which is a bit of a shitty thing to do really.

That is a good point.

Thanks for this.

I didn't know if it's Origen and that's a really important thing to know

JaneJeffer · 14/05/2021 17:34

Political correctness gone mad :) I dont understand and I dont remember :) I think that is a very british term. I will research on political correctness gone mad

aprillfestival · 14/05/2021 17:34

@lakesidelife

Uncritical virtue signaling is how I think of it when the term is being used as an insult.

It doesn't relate to how the word was originally used.

What does "virtue signalling" mean?

I just want to say I'm not British so it's more a universal term I think.

Absolutely this.

Read the folktale The Emperor's New Clothes. The woke brigade are the sycophantic townspeople who, afraid of being thought to be foolish, are praising the Emperor's outfit as he parades around completely naked.

Those who recognise wokeness for the white virtue-signalling it has now become are the child who is unafraid to say that the Emperor is naked.

ssd · 14/05/2021 17:36

Woke is one if many words i see all the time on mn and i have no clue what it means. See also cis and gender critical. And if you ask you get some smart arse ripping the piss. So i dont ask.

Surfschool · 14/05/2021 17:36

Woke is used to insult anyone who doesn't hate everyone else, it's used by bigots

ssd · 14/05/2021 17:38

The WOKE BRIGADE are the biggest bigots of the lot.

HTH. Smile

FrippEnos · 14/05/2021 17:40

@SomewhereInbetween1

It's what people who aren't aware of world issues use to describe people who are.
It used to be.

Times have moved on.

This is a good description of how I understand the term to be used.

So woke they won’t accept or reply to any other perspective and reject it as bigoted.

I am fairly liberal generally but I do struggle with some people who won’t hear any other opinion than their own or Engage in a meaningful discussion about their points.

Ninkanink · 14/05/2021 17:42

I honestly will feel really sorry for people when the beast begins to eat its own. They’ve no clue at all.

We have been here many many times before. It’s never worked out well for anyone.

ikeepseeingit · 14/05/2021 17:43

I see people using 'woke' in the same (slightly less offensive) way as people saying 'Karen' or 'ok boomer'. Most of the time 'woke' is used to discredit a person arguing for things such as trans women are women or 'overly' left ideals. It's very similar to calling them snowflakes really. I've never heard of any young person calling themselves 'woke' unless they were from California. Certainly not from the UK at least.

Personally, I normally agree with ' the woke brigade'. I have seen it go too far, but not as often as I dislike what the right-wing is doing. I don't really agree with anyone using any of the terms I mentioned above, I think they're all methods of silencing what can be a very good argument, and pretty much just a cop-out. It's very hard to have a discussion with someone that you know just dislikes the core of who you are, and it's not productive to throw the terms around like they're insults. You could just actually explain your point.
