Cashier came and moved me to another till

For context, I’m abroad, if it makes a difference.
This morning I was queuing up in the supermarket (biggish queues) for picnic things whilst Dp and toddler Dd waited in the car.
One of the cashiers/staff came to me and gently guided me over to another till where there were less people. I just stood there feeling humiliated. She obviously thought I was pregnant.
As she did a changeover with another woman on the till, I saw them looking over at me and the other woman looked at me and shook her head in surprise to the woman who moved me.
Then the one lady in the queue was looking back at me.
The whole thing was very humiliating and I felt like shit all day.
I was wearing a long oversized, striped shirt and denim shorts (quite hot here) I have big boobs and am desperately trying to lose weight (size 16, used to be 10) years of fertility treatments then pregnancy.
I didn’t tell Dp as felt so ashamed, now I feel disgusted with myself when I eat anything.
Cannot believe I’m so fat now that I’m being mistaken for being pregnant.

I'm now much more interested in the poster who 'nearly said something' because, at 42, they asked if it was her second dose? I'm 40. I've had both.

huuskymam · 08/05/2021 20:51

If the queue for one till was really long, she was probably just evening then out so nobody has to wait longer than necessary. It happens in my local supermarkets all the time. I never for a minute thought they were moving me cause I looked pregnant, I'm a size 16.

slashlover · 08/05/2021 20:51

@swapsicles

I almost said something earlier today when at the vaccination centre the lady checking in asked if it was my 2nd vaccine, I'm only 42! Angry I told myself it wasn't because I looked older but not sure why she said that otherwise. Later on she asked of people were having their first, Its not nice (or flattering) but you just have to ignore and get on with your day 😁
My coworker went for her second vaccine yesterday and she's 22.
Shoutingovertheterraces · 08/05/2021 20:51

@toocold54 There were around 5/6 rows all
with many people in, I had a couple in front of me and a couple behind, like most rows, normal amount of products in my trolley. She came all the way down to just specifically me. I know she thought that 100% and probably thought she was doing a nice thing, then it got pretty awkward when her friend perhaps thought I didn’t look pregnant (I was face on to her, so perhaps not really)

Ps when I say my sister looked like a model, I mean she had the physique of a non-pregnant model. Sometimes people just get an idea in their head...

toocold54 · 08/05/2021 20:52

It’s usually slimmer people who are self conscious about looking pregnant as them having a pot belly looks more like they’re pregnant than someone who’s overweight. I know 3 very slim people who have been asked on several occasions about their pregnancies.

Mandalay246 · 08/05/2021 20:52

You are overthinking this - but even if you are right, you got through the checkout earlier than you would have, that would have me dancing for joy!!!! Even if they did think you were pregnant many people have been thought pregnant when not - it's hardly worth a second thought. How on earth do you cope with life if something like this stresses you so much?

VenusTiger · 08/05/2021 20:52

What a weird thread - it's like everyone can't read!! The OP has made it very clear that she was picked out of a queue and guided to the other side of the shop to a priority persons queue.
OP that is weird behaviour - ppl can decide themselves which queue they want to join surely.
Forget what others think of your weight and do something about it for yourself. Good luck.

GammyLeg · 08/05/2021 20:52

For the people saying “I never got special treatment when I was pregnant”, the world is a big place.

This used to happen to me when I was pregnant and living abroad. It also happened to me when I wasn’t pregnant as I was just bigger than the rest of the population!

It’s embarrassing but let it go OP.

Shoutingovertheterraces · 08/05/2021 20:54

@VVKills27 You’re very kind, thank you, but it was obvious and I know how I look, it just felt ultra shitty and ruined the day, I need to shift this,

I honestly feel this is more in your own head OP because of your insecurities and there could be a million reasons why they moved you. It is odd that they would pick you out of a line but it might have been because you were looking unwell, or they thought you had a disability, or weren’t wearing a mask so thought you had an exemption etc.

Shoutingovertheterraces · 08/05/2021 20:55

@toocold54 No, she was an elderly lady though and also was looking at them and looking back at me, it was horrible!

On a tangent here but what a lovely, kind thing for her to do.
Ok she made a mistake and she could be feeling bad about it too
but the bottom line for me is, it sounds like you're in a pretty good neighbourhood op.

VVKills27 · 08/05/2021 20:56

It’s honestly something that could happen to anyone, I really do mean that. I’m sorry it’s made you feel so terrible x

You're being silly. I'm younger than you and should be getting the call for my 2nd vaccine within the next fortnight. There are plenty of young people who were in group 6 or higher priority than that, so there will plenty of young people coming in for a 2nd vaccine.
MiddlesexGirl · 08/05/2021 20:57

Difficult to describe but maybe the supervisor thought you would be waiting the longest relative to when you arrived in the queue. So the one in front of you was going to be served more quickly if they stayed in that queue but you would be served more quickly by being moved. And compared with the other queues you had been there longest.

Anyway, I was once congratulated on being pregnant when I wasn't. I've always had a bit of a tummy but not more than 26 BMI so only a little overweight at the time. People see what they want to see even when there's little to no evidence.

Shoutingovertheterraces · 08/05/2021 20:59

@toocold54 No exemptions for masks here, had one on and am young-ish, was pretty happy going about my business...I just looked pregnant to her 😬

@SunnySpills It’s just the law here, it’s priority, they have to follow it

@Mandalay246 I cope with life very well. This didn’t stress me out, it made me feel really low and humiliated. I’m trying desperately to lose weight and am piling it on more desire eating less (suffered with long covid for a year and worried to work out) previous to this years of fertility treatments and ivf

OP posts:
toocold54 · 08/05/2021 21:05

I would be extremely surprised if they thought you were pregnant OP unless you carry all of your weight around your belly and are slimmer everywhere else. As someone who is overweight I’ve never been mistaken for being pregnant as people know it’s probably just fat like the rest of my body Smile

But if they did think you were pregnant I’m sorry it happened to you but I wouldn’t let it get you down as I have a couple of friends who it happens to all of the time one is a size 6-8 and the others are both size 8-10

There are multiple other reasons to have had your second vaccine? I’m 24 and have had it. Hmm
Prokupatuscrakedatus · 08/05/2021 21:09

Didn't you talk to them? Ask why you were moved?

Mandalay246 · 08/05/2021 21:09

FGS - you are a size 16, as am I. If someone today thought I was pregnant I would laugh and carry on with my day - not feel humiliated and have to run to MN to ask for advice! Has it ever occurred to you that the way you are going on might just make a size 16, or above, person reading this start worrying about their own weight?

Shoutingovertheterraces · 08/05/2021 21:11

@Mandalay246 Thanks.

@Prokupatuscrakedatus Tbh I just sort of stood there, feeling really embarrassed, which probably sounds pathetic
