to be surprised at how many Mumsnetters are fine with pornography?

Particularly as porn has become so much more mainstream in the past few years, I'd have thought that people would be concerned about premature sexualisation of children. Also I'm surprised that so many women are fine with it given that the humiliation and degradation of women is the central theme of pornography. You only have to look at the titles to realise that.

why should i stop commenting on you, is that because im right? so your dismissing me like everyone else

Elizabetth · 15/11/2007 13:41

"you have studiously ignored every reasoned argument which contradicts your own points. if those of us not in agreement with you are trying to silence you, shouting you down and belittling you, then you are doing the same to us. in fact, none of those things are going on here; what is happening is aclled a debate. a discussion. an argumnet perhaps. but it involves each person saying something, being responded to, and then saying something further. we are ALL doing that."

Actually I've addressed a lot of the pro-porn people's posts directly, including yours, which is more than can be said for some of them. And I can point you back to posts where people said I needed therapy, had issues and was dried up (hee - the old ones are the goodies), so yeah the insults were there. I don't have the time or energy to address every post. There are other people on this thread besides me who can answer.

"your apparent persecution complex does your argument no favours, frankly."

It's not a complex if people actually were being insulting. I'm not taking it personally though. I know it's very important for a lot of pro-porn people that the counter arguments never get heard or get shouted down.

"why should i stop commenting on you, is that because im right? so your dismissing me like everyone else "

Because I'm not the topic here. If the topic was "Elizabetth - have a go at her, say what you think" then go ahead but the topic of this thread is pornography and mumsnetters attitudes towards it.

If you want to talk about me maybe you should find somewhere else to do it. Is it really that hard to understand?

"I'm happy to make some especially for you if you like??? I have a dh and a webcam...any preferences as to content?"

You keep bringing your sex life into these conversations don't you normabutty? I'll pass thanks. I was talking about porn that is already out there.

BeautifulBoysGalore · 15/11/2007 13:48

ok, well i missed the insults. which i agree are wrong.

people are adressing you, tho E, because you are the OP. you get to hold court on your own thread

Swedes2Turnips1 · 15/11/2007 13:48

Beautifulboys - "the fact is, mmj, that 20 years ago a woman bearing her breasts for anyone other than the one man who was entitled to see them was summarily dismissed as a slag, and a totally unworthy person."
I think you undermine your own argument. I think it is better for women to bear their breasts to whoever they want to see them. Both 20 years ago and now. Anyone who wants to bear their breasts to everyone is an exhibitionist. Quite possibly a slag too.

onebatmother · 15/11/2007 13:51

lol swedes!

LuckyUnderpants · 15/11/2007 13:51

Elizabetth you started this thread, and you asked for peoples opinions to AIBU 'to be surprised at how many Mumsnetters are fine with pornography?' yet you havent listen to anyones opinions, anyone who disagrees with you is wrong, if i thought for one minute you would take on board my opinion i would give it to you. I followed this thread till 1oclock this morning and didnt join in because it wasnt worth wasting my breath arguing with you when you are not listening.

My advice to anyone else who feels like answering to this op, dont bother! its a waste of time, Elizabetth is not looking for opinions she is just picking a fight.

VictorianSqualor · 15/11/2007 13:51

Exactly, Elizabeth, you are not only the OP, but the main anti-porn poster, this is why peopel keep adressing you, whilst you pick and choose which opinions/arguments to answer and which to ignore.

BeautifulBoysGalore · 15/11/2007 13:52

wtf?
so a woman who wants to show her body to lots of people is a slag?
a woman who has sex with lots of different people is somehow a lesser being than someone who has sex with, what, 2? or is 3 allowed?

and you say porn is misogynistic. hah.

onebatmother · 15/11/2007 13:53

norma! gracious, policywonk was right to warn me about you!

Trouble is (though perhaps we can discuss your suggestion further off-board ) you and dh aren't an industry.. I don't think?

onebatmother · 15/11/2007 13:54

bbg i think swedes was being ironicalist.

normabutty · 15/11/2007 13:54

"I was talking about porn that is already out there."

perhaps I should point you in the direction of the porn I've already put out there then

As far as I'm concerned I don't have a problem with porn. Yes, I believe that there are porn stars (male and female) who are exploited and taken advantage of. I think there should be regulation to help prevent that sort of exploitation from taking place, like in other industries. Trying to ban porn only serves to push it further underground and exploit people further. Like I've said previously I'd only watch porn where the stuff in the film/clip was stuff I would do myself. I wouldn't expect to watch someone doing things I wouldn't be prepared to do.

normabutty · 15/11/2007 13:56

OBM

onebatmother · 15/11/2007 13:56

gosh maybe you are an industry?

Elizabetth · 15/11/2007 13:56

The only person who appears to be picking a fight and not actually contributing anything to the topic (which is pornogrpahy not me if you had forgotten) is you LuckyUnderpants.

BBG, I agree with you about not calling women slags or any other misogynistic insult. I hate that kind of thing.

OP posts:
Swedes2Turnips1 · 15/11/2007 13:57

Beautifulboys - I did not say a woman who wants to show her body to lots of people was a slag. That was you - it was actually you who first said women who did such and such were slags. I said she might possibly be a slag, agreeing with the possiblity you raised. Anyway, what is a slag?

slag n. The vitreous mass left as a residue by the smelting of metallic ore.

sorry my work is failing to fully engage me, clearly.

Swedes2Turnips1 · 15/11/2007 14:00

onebatmother - blimey. Now that is insulting.

donnie · 15/11/2007 14:00

a slag is a socio-sexual male construct.

btw there is no such word as 'ironicalist'. I do believe you mean 'ironic'.

onebatmother · 15/11/2007 14:00

swedes

kittock · 15/11/2007 14:01

obm you beat me to it.

There's also the verb:

verb (used without object) 6. to form slag; become a slaglike mass.

I think that might be what happened to me.

onebatmother · 15/11/2007 14:01

are you being ironicalistic donnie?

Swedes2Turnips1 · 15/11/2007 14:01

donnie: ironicalist is a Mumsnet construct.
