I don't get it. Its depressing. We deserve better than this surely? Why give them the green light? What kind of society do we want? One where liars get our approval?

@Tuesdaysintheazores

Labour don't have anyone with any ideas & you have to give the Tories credit for how they've handled the pandemic.

Is that a joke? We've had 130,000 dead. Don't know about Labour bots I reckon the MN Tory bots are out in force this evening

I was surprised at how well it was handled.

I assumed bodies would have piled up in the streets before lockdowns were implemented.

Justanotherlurker · 05/05/2021 21:55

Personally, I think a lot of its issues are down to privatisation..

Well most of that privatisation was enabled by the last labour government, the real problem is that any hint of refrom is met with cryes of the tories wanting to impliment a US style healthcare whilst asking why we can't take the nordic approach whilst also ignoring the mix of private and publick mix.

Labour has weaponised the NHS, just the same as house prices (which unironically falls across the political divide) no one wants to be the government in power to fully reform it.

DiddlyWiddly · 05/05/2021 21:56

I agree, out of a population of 66 million odd, 130,000 is absolutely tiny.
It’s not even half of one percent.
Every death is of course horrific, but it could be so much worse.

the80sweregreat · 05/05/2021 21:56

All my elderly relatives have died when they went into an NHS hospital. The care was hit and miss and they were mostly terrible to be honest. The staff work hard but it's not fit for purpose and it's probably even worse now since covid. Hardly any joined up thinking and too many managers and the care was miserable. I know that a juggernaut like the NHS needs to change but I can't see it happening under Labour either even if they did get ever get into power ( unlikely)
I'm honestly dreading getting old. I am actually scared and would rather be able to write a living will that I would know would be acted on.

Cattenberg · 05/05/2021 21:56

I hate the Tories and couldn’t vote for them. Most of what they stand for is anathema to me.

But I can’t vote Labour, Lib Dem or Green anymore. Sex discrimination still exists, so I want to keep sex as one of the nine protected characteristics covered by the Equality Act. I also don’t want the legal definitions of “mother” and “father” to be changed unilaterally by a single interest group, without a wider discussion about how this could affect us all.

I’ll vote for the Independent candidate in the PCC election. When we next have a general or council election, I’ll probably spoil my paper. It seems to be traditional to draw male genitalia on a spoiled ballot, so perhaps I’ll shock the counters by sketching a vulva in 9B pencil.

winched · 05/05/2021 21:57

@DiddlyWiddly I can totally see that.

My first job at 14 (15 years ago) was in a pharmacy and one of their "rackets" was making sure everyone, and I mean everyone, was signed up to the minor ailments scheme.

Need a packet of 23p paracetamol? No problem, let me just put that through on the minor ailments for you. That turns it into a prescription, which means they can claim item fees and dispensing fees for stuff that was getting sold anyway.

So much waste...

MarjorieBouvier · 05/05/2021 21:58

I'm voting Conservative for the first time ever tomorrow. Why? Because our local Conservative actually lives locally, is on all the local fb groups, and responds whenever there is an issue in the area. Flytipping? Tag him in a fb post and it gets sorted. Parking issues? Tag him and he'll update you on the local parking restriction proposals. Speeding/bad driving? Tag him and he'll make it a point to propose speeding restrictions to the council. He's fantastic! Although I am very aware that it's because he genuinely wants to help, not because he's Tory.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 05/05/2021 22:03

@DiddlyWiddly

I came to the conclusion the NHS is completely unfit for purpose. Just so beyond fixing we'd probably be better tearing it down and starting from scratch Sad but true Personally, I think a lot of its issues are down to privatisation.. My DH used to do commercial building work, the NHS would be charged absolutely eye watering amounts of money for extremely simple, small jobs because a private company held the contract and could charge whatever they pleased.
Yes, because Labour gave the veneer of funding the NHS but actually mortgages it through PFI contracts.
the80sweregreat · 05/05/2021 22:03

The NHS waste too much money. It's nothing new , so why isn't it sorted out?
I wonder if Stamer would resign when he loses Hartkepool? It might shake things up a bit if he does. They need a different leader desperately

Moonstone1234 · 05/05/2021 22:05

And yes, the NHS needs massive reform.

Moonstone1234 · 05/05/2021 22:06

I have just seen that even the Guardian is saying Labour looks like they will lose Hartlepool.

frumpety · 05/05/2021 22:06

It is interesting that the whole trans debate is happening under a Conservative government with a massive majority, anything that gets through parliament is because the Conservatives support it or don't oppose it.

Doomsdayiscoming · 05/05/2021 22:07

I’ve always thought Johnson was a stand up bloke. Wouldn’t trust him with my wife, mind.

But yeah, what does that matter? Sure he has to remember a lot of Birthdays, but Moonpig has handy reminders these days.

He’s levelling up the country. Soon the South will be just as shit as the North. Give him a break!

Yes and anyone who really wanted to help their community could do something similar. So why do they not?
aiwblam · 05/05/2021 22:08

Look OP, most politicians are liars, they just wear different coloured rosettes. So, with that in mind, I didn't vote at the last election. Because I wasn't willing to vote for a liar.

watingroom2 · 05/05/2021 22:08

The system is broken we need PR...

the80sweregreat · 05/05/2021 22:09

Of course Labour will lose Hartlepool and bang the nails in the coffin even more.
It's just the Labour Party that can't see it .

Pretty sure they can see it
Hotankles · 05/05/2021 22:12

Labour kicked women members OUT for fighting for single sex safe spaces with the delightful Lisa Nandy calling us Transphobic and that we wasn’t wanted in the party. What do you expect!? I was raised in a Labour house but when it got the point I was shouting at the TV because of what the Labour Party were doing to us I knew they had fucked it and I couldn’t vote for them anymore. They know they have lost thousands of voters because what they did but they will not consider reviewing their stand point. There eyes are firmly on the 2024 GE and waiting for they young woke uni leavers to pull them out of the shit

Doomsdayiscoming · 05/05/2021 22:13

I just think it’s bollucks. All this police brutality and I can’t even vote for the person who is responsible for that on a local level.

the80sweregreat · 05/05/2021 22:14

@watingroom2

I agree , but the Labour Party didn't say this in 97 , 2001 , or 2005 did they ? The Lib dems are the only ones who ever wanted this debate or vote for it, AV didn't set the world alight and was rejected. Plus Blair may be universally hated but he led the Labour Party to three wins on the trot with centre left policies. Long time ago now of course!
Tuesdaysintheazores · 05/05/2021 22:14

Boris Johnson would certainly love it if Keir Starmer did resign, given how good he is at PMQs.

I think this thread shows how much love there is for Alexander de Pfeffel or whatever he's called really and his great team of Matt Hancock, Jacob Rees Mogg, Gavin Williamson, Priti Patel etc. so I don't think the labour leader changing would really make a difference

I find it very depressing that people vote Labour but I respect that people have a choice for whom they vote
Andante57 · 05/05/2021 22:15

They are very clever. Maybe Labour could do with their own Dominic Cummings!

Labour used to have Peter Mandelson and Alastair Campbell. Surely the Labour Party could find replacements for them?

NC267891 · 05/05/2021 22:16

@flashylamp

I don't think OP had trouble understanding people have different views. I think OP has trouble understanding why anyone would support the Tory view. It's a reasonable thing to ask. I don't get it either.
Literally that. But they can never actually explain it. Ever.
