I don't get it. Its depressing. We deserve better than this surely? Why give them the green light? What kind of society do we want? One where liars get our approval?

Why did people vote Labour when they were let down time and time again

Not everyone’s lives improved under the Labour Party

frumpety · 05/05/2021 22:19

Those who are slating the NHS, the Conservatives have been in charge of it for the last 10 years, it is has been entirely their responsibility for all of those 10 years, what would you like them to do differently that wouldn't cost the hardworking taxpayer more money ? If you are happy to spend more money for healthcare, how much monthly could you afford ? £50, £100, £200, £400,£more ?

Blackberrycream · 05/05/2021 22:19

I think you are right @waitingroom2
There is a desperate need for alternate voices. Right now a vote for Labour or Conservative are generally the only votes that make a difference. With Labour making such a mess of the last few years we are heading towards a one party nation which is really unhealthy.

Crimeismymiddlename · 05/05/2021 22:20

I would not vote Tory. However I feel that Labour is not a proper opposition at this time. I frankly felt insulted by Corbyn’s save the working class rhetoric-working people want policy’s that work for them and make sense rather than everything for free with no indication on where the never ending pot of money would end, as well as being very worried what he would mean for an low waged home owner like myself. The leadership competition in which they all competed to be the most working class was fucking stupid-and again insulting. People want proper leadership, with clear cut agenda’s and proper arguments but Labour is not giving us any of that. So why would I vote for them.
Also-it’s really rude to assume that because a person votes a certain way it means they are stupid/uncaring/uneducated. My entire family votes tory-some are even members and I still love them, and they are all good people but I think hard core Labour supporters are going to have to accept that they Labour has a lot of work to do to get over the damage that Corbyn actually did.

Justanotherlurker · 05/05/2021 22:21

I wonder if Stamer would resign when he loses Hartkepool? It might shake things up a bit if he does. They need a different leader desperately

Even though he should, why would he, Labour has too much rot after the 'Oh jeremy Corbyn' cult took over, he is innefective as opposition but there is no one else, Labour and it's die hard activists are in a pickle, they have lost the working class which they continue to write off as thick (as in the OP) but think IDPOL is a vote winner despite it being rejected worldwide at the minute.

I want a decent opposition to vote for and to hold the current tories to account, green aren't actually green, lib dems are good locally but nationally a joke, it's a coin toss between monster raving loony party and wep for an effective spoiling the ballot.

Starmer is a place holder until labour can work out what direction they need to go, the problem is they have been ostracising the red wall for over a decade whilst also expecting them to always vote for them, it's going to need a lot of self reflection.

Muminabun · 05/05/2021 22:22

Tories are not perfect but they appeal to me because I like freedom and am not a fan of political correctness. I also don’t want a big expensive government telling me how to think and regulating every area of my life.

656times · 05/05/2021 22:22

The corruption right now is off the scale. Pretty depressing. You’d have to shoot me before voting Tory.

MorbidMuch · 05/05/2021 22:23

@CuntAmongstThePigeons

Surely the bigger question is how are the other parties so utterly incompetent that people see the Tories as the only viable option?

Labour, the Lib Dems and the Greens, all of whom I've voted for in the past and would love to vote for again all lie about one of THE most basic tenets of human understanding around the world. What a bloody woman is.

This!!
Peterbear · 05/05/2021 22:23

I agree OP. So depressing. What does Bojo have to do to stop people voting for him.?

MarshaBradyo · 05/05/2021 22:24

I had hoped Starmer would be better, or perceived to be.

A shame. I don’t want just one very strong party.

But sex based rights are politically motivating to me and very important.

656times · 05/05/2021 22:24

@Muminabun

Just how do you think the opposition would regulate every area of your life...?

Thedogscollar · 05/05/2021 22:24

@the80sweregreat

The vaccine roll out has saved their bacon.
Definitely. Every other thing they have done re Covid has been a fucking disaster.

Hell will freeze over before I ever vote Tory.

They couldn't give a shit about anybody other than themselves and their cronies.

Tuesdaysintheazores · 05/05/2021 22:24

Tories are not perfect but they appeal to me because I like freedom

Except freedom of movement presumably

OhWhyNot · 05/05/2021 22:25

Crimeismymiddlename absolutely agree with your post

The tiresome all those that vote Tory are stupid if they are working class or selfish is so childish

Unfortunately some feel that putting a cross next to Labour makes them morally superior

There eyes are firmly on the 2024 GE and waiting for they young woke uni leavers to pull them out of the shit

Their problem though is that young woke uni leavers grow into working, tax paying, home buying (or lack of!), parents.

I think there is a certain degree of naivety about socialism and wokeness, and I say that as someone who is generally on the left of most things and thought I was actually awake.

Prime example - I remember being outraged about "the bedroom tax" and glad when Scotland said they wouldn't be implementing it. Those awful mean Tory bastards. Then I grew up a little bit and realised that in the real world, where there is a severe housing shortage and families with children in homeless accommodation... how is a single person rattling around in a 4 bedroom home fair? Just because they "won the lottery ticket" thirty years ago. Naive young school leaver me just thought they should build more houses. Thirty year old jaded me still thinks they should build more houses, but in the mean time we can at least try to make the system we have right now fairer (and actually available!) for the people most in need.

It's mostly the Tories methods I disagree with (like implementing the "tax" even if there were no homes available to downsize to).

tenpast10 · 05/05/2021 22:30

Many of the attitudes on this thread the pompous incomprehension, the sanctimoniousness are precisely why the Tories will increase their seats tomorrow.

They're awful, but they're better than the alternatives. And that's why people keep voting for them.

the80sweregreat · 05/05/2021 22:31

Boris Johnson was smirking today on the tv,
They have this in the bag.
:(

I feel exactly the same. I had high hopes for KS and was excited when he came in the scene but he too was too weak to stand up and say - women need safe spaces. He just totally dodged the question if asked. I remember seeing him on tv putting his views against Lisa Nandy and Rebecca long when they were up for election. When the question was raised those two fell on their swords and he dismissed it as childish and wouldn’t go any further. I was sorely disappointed.
Vargas · 05/05/2021 22:33

This will be the first time ever that I don't vote Labour. But I can't bring myself to vote Tory. I'll either spoil my ballot or do a protest vote for Binface. It's the misogyny and anti-semitism of the Labour Party that have forced this on me (and many others).

frumpety · 05/05/2021 22:34

They're awful, but they're better than the alternatives. And that's why people keep voting for them.

How would we know ?

10 days is a long time in politics never mind 10 years.

MarjorieBouvier · 05/05/2021 22:35

Do you mean any local person? People do! People start petitions about speeding/parking all the time. And nothing is done until however many deaths in whatever time frame the council quotes. The position of power gets things done.

the80sweregreat · 05/05/2021 22:35

KS should just resign and go in the summer.
Labour with him in charge is only going one way and it's not up!
Who to replace him is hard though.
