To not want to shop at Tesco because of this?

radiateforme · 30/04/2021 21:18

Prices gone up generally unless you sign up to their club card. Significantly cheaper (reasonably priced) products if you're a club card holder. I reckon most people just sign up to the club card. I can't help but feel massively inclined to shop elsewhere (aldi) because I hate this kind of marketing. Not sure why it makes me feel like this. Pretty trivial. Maybe I'm far too stubborn. Anyone else feel like this or just me?

I loved the days when Tesco doubled up your points. I got my washing machine from them when they did Tesco Direct for about £30. I now tend to use other shops as well now, just wherever I happen to be. Also like their clothes.

RampantIvy · 01/05/2021 08:45

Is Asda the only major supermarket to not have any kind of loyalty card?

In terms of dealing with spam, it is very easy to block sender once you receive an email from anyone. I would also suggest that you create another email address for shops.

From Money saving expert - Never choose where you shop due to loyalty schemes, yet always use it if you shop somewhere with one

This is how I shop as well. Our nearest supermarket is Tesco, so I shop there more frequently than any other supermarket.

Sparklingbrook · 01/05/2021 08:52

@kowari

If you don't like it then fine, that's your prerogative but seems like you already made you mind up therefore a pointless post I agree
Me too. What's the point of the debate? Loads of reasons why having a Clubcard might be a good idea, the fear of spam is null and void because there isn't any but the thread is going round in circles. Confused
Undertheoldlindentree · 01/05/2021 08:53

I find this really frustrating. I don't have a Tesco within 10 miles of me, so no clubcard. I visited an elderly relative, offered to pop out and do for some shopping for her and was stung by big price differences in a Tesco supermarket. I couldn't vary the items because she's used to very specific brands. A shop of about £25 would have been around about £7 less with a card. Next time I was wise to this and signed up to the Clubcard app, validated the sign up and logged in. Bought around £40 of shopping, got to the till....showed the assistant my app and was told it looked different to the screen they were used to and they couldn't scan it! Once again had to pay the higher prices. Now I buy in Morrisons or Asda before I visit.

Mooda · 01/05/2021 08:56

Tesco is basically buying your data for discounts and if you don't feel comfortable with that yanbu.

SunshiningBetty · 01/05/2021 09:00

What pisses me off the most is that they no longer so any carrier bags when having shopping delivered. During the height of the pandemic they went back to carrier bags but wouldn’t accept them being returned, then they went to shitty tray liners with no handles and full of cans so you can’t lift them and now nothing.

We still have a shielding child so, after being forced to stand less than a metre away from a hovering delivery driver while he watched me unload the shopping into another bag one item at a time, I complained to customer services. Apparently the bloke I spoke to should be on SAGE as ‘the pandemic is over now’ folks! After I had explained to him that it wasn’t for us as we still had to shield our child he then asked me if we’d done anything nice this weekend Shock

I have another one coming this weekend and, if it’s not in bags as requested, I shall
be making the driver wait in the lorry while I unpack it at a leisurely pace. Twats

We have a Tesco credit card which is also a club card. Tesco points on anything we use the card for anywhere plus clubcard points for shopping at Tesco. We use our credit card for everything we can and always pay it off each month .
Only communication we receive from them comes via the post with vouchers (either for specific items or ££££s thanks to the points - can't begin to work out how much we have saved over the years.
The discounted price for clubcard holders is a clever move my Tesco, cheaper for them to implement than sending out vouchers, the discount is visible to non-club card holders so and will encourage some new people to sign up. Clearly you aren't one of them OP, but then you can't really complain about not getting the discounts.
I used to do a shop in Aldi then top up with the things I couldn't get/didn't like from there but during the pandemic only wanted to go to one shop so it was Tesco as I could buy more things there. With various in store discounts, and vouchers for products and ££, over the year I think it probably hasn't cost me much more than If I'd carried on shopping in both shops.

MeanderingGently · 01/05/2021 09:32

I feel the same. Tesco clubcard used to be points-based as a way of getting customers to stay loyal and to take their vouchers to spend and thus buy other things as well at the same time. I can go with that.

But to offer two different prices, one very much cheaper for card holders, doesn't sit right with me. To my mind it just shows how much they want customers to have a card....they use the cards for all sorts of marketing and promotions as well as for harvesting data, they don't do this just to be "nice" to customers.

I've begun going to Sainsbury's who have offers and low prices available to everyone, not just cardholders (I'm sure other stores have the same but we don't have many supermarkets in our local, rural town!)

DinosaurDiana · 01/05/2021 09:33

I have no problem with what Tesco are doing.
I won’t go to Sainsbury’s because they are expensive.

safclass · 01/05/2021 09:33

I have a nectar card which hardly got used until covid hit and i felt it was the safest quietest shop so i have a good amount saved now, but idont buy things just because of an offer.
I thought you had to sign up for a new tesco deal to get their offers in store so was quite pleasantly surprised to see its just their normal card. Again i only buy what i need /would use and can actually make some pretty good savings ie half price on regular stuff. I dont get emails from ttesco, vouchers through the post, as someone said you can unsubscribe from the emails.

Sainsbury's is too far away from me. Tesco is closest so that's what I'll use. If I get money off some of my shopping then that's a bonus. I have no issues with them either
CounsellorTroi · 01/05/2021 09:38

The Coop system is more like Boots, the points equate to money you can spend in store and they are quite generous.

stackemhigh · 01/05/2021 09:42

I think I just don't like being marketed at based on my spending habits.

Then you simply tick the box saying you don't want to receive any marketing.

Tesco are very reserved when it comes to marketing, I think I get one email a month from them. I can easily unsubscribe if I want to.

The data mining is a massive part of Tesco strategy, they purchased customer science company Dunnhumby, who now collect the Clubcard data. Dunnhumby have 50 offices worldwide and sell information to many companies.

The Clubcard pricing is a new strategy, it drives customer perception that they get many more offers with a Clubcard then at other supermarkets.

hedgehogger1 · 01/05/2021 09:50

We've had so free days out with Tesco vouchers. I'm happy for them to know what I've bought when we can go to Alton towers for the cost of the car park

Butteredtoast55 · 01/05/2021 09:53

The Club Card has been around for many, many years (mid-90s?). I think a lot of older customers are perfectly capable of getting a Club Card and probably have had one for decades. I do shopping for my uncle (82) and he saves his points for Christmas shopping. He is the one that usually tells me about special deals and is a really savvy shopper.
I can’t get worked up about Tesco or any other supermarket trying to sell stuff and make a profit. Give people a bit of credit for using common sense when they shop.

womaninatightspot · 01/05/2021 09:55

I don't mind it. I shop online so clubcard discounts automatically applied. I paid for my RAC membership this year with clubcard points. Also had some good cheap clubcard stays previously.

GreenSlide · 01/05/2021 10:01

I love the club card prices, much better than the BOGOF deals you used to get or 5p off a Rustlers burger or something daft like that. Clubcard prices are usually something useful like tea or nappies that you need to buy anyway and often half price.

Jumpers268 · 01/05/2021 10:02

I did think the other day, when in Tesco, screw paying that for cheese if you don't have a clubcard. I have a "loyalty" card for every shop haha. I only buy what I want/need. I tend to do 2 shops a week (one at Aldi and one at Tesco). Oh and Sainsbury's because their burgers are amazing! I've not had a single email from Tesco, ever.

Branleuse · 01/05/2021 10:06

Ive had a clubcard for years as its the best value loyalty card I think. Get good discounts on petrol quite often and you can triple the points towards holidays or get free railcards with it. I think its worth doing. Obviously they use your data on shopping habits but that happens when you buy anything online anyway.
This has made me use tesco more as its brought the prices more inline with aldi etc now

What are they doing with all the information? Off to start a thread about it I think.

*I don't know why you'd think you'd spend more. I don't even think about my card in that regard. I buy what I need, I buy within my budget, and I don't think about the points at all, until I get my quarterly statement.

You're over-thinking this. No-one's out to get you.*

Um, the research is that loyalty schemes absolutely make people spend more. Of course they do. That's why stores have them. You think they do these things out of the goodness of their heart???

I'm with OP in that I don't sign up to the schemes, but I still shop there. By the same logic, I'm still spending less than a loyalty card holder overall.

Sparklingbrook · 01/05/2021 11:25

What are they doing with all the information?

Not sure, I mean they know what people buy as a whole when it goes through the till so they know what to stock/what doesn't sell.
All to do with marketing/sales and getting you to buy more clearly, but if you delete spam emails and bin junk mail and don't succumb to it it doesn't matter.

RampantIvy · 01/05/2021 11:28

Get good discounts on petrol quite often

Our local Tesco prints out discount vouchers for their nearest petrol station - 10 miles away. Needless to say these vouchers go straight into the bin.

They have whatever scheme works got them whether it’s making you buy more or, just to buy from them. However you either do your big shop to a budget or you don’t. It’s not Tesco’s or any other supermarkets fault if you don’t.

NB I have mine delivered from Tesco’s as the shop that delivers it has a bigger range than my local store.. It’s a personal challenge every week to get it as close to the £40 free delivery as possible.£40.02 this week!

You can easily spend more in Tesco without spending more overall. If you go for the offers and fo your weekly shop there for example. Doesn't necessarily mean the customer is spending more per week.
