To not want to shop at Tesco because of this?

Prices gone up generally unless you sign up to their club card. Significantly cheaper (reasonably priced) products if you're a club card holder. I reckon most people just sign up to the club card. I can't help but feel massively inclined to shop elsewhere (aldi) because I hate this kind of marketing. Not sure why it makes me feel like this. Pretty trivial. Maybe I'm far too stubborn. Anyone else feel like this or just me?

@Nith

I've never understood how the club card discounts work. I once offered my card at the checkout before they started scanning stuff and the cashier said it was OK, the discounts would be applied anyway. But how do they know you've got a club card if you don't have to show it till after they've rung everything up and you're ready to pay?
As soon as you scan the clubcard after putting the stuff through the till it automatically takes the money off. It doesn't matter if you do it at the beginning, middle or end the discount will work and the total will adjust.

@radiateforme I have actually tried Aldi and Lidl a couple of times pre covid , they are just not for me and now I’m sticking with online and the odd trip to M&S .

I guess I just don't like the whole loyalty scheme thing. I genuinely think if I had loyalty cards I'd spend way more than I do now without. Their aim is for a high cart value. I get it, just annoys me for some reason. Clearly I'm in a minority which is fine 😁
You’re not. Generally I can’t bare them. Nectar is the pits we spend a fortune in there- probably £300 a month. Yet the points are worth bugger all unless you do the double up thing which is only available for about a week a year and for very limited stuff. Am ok with boots’ scheme because it seems pretty straightforward and you do get points accumulated quite quickly which you can then spend like cash. Every other scheme does my head in especially the “my John Lewis” one which has not redeeming features at all other than to let them track what you are buying. No thanks.

I have a credit card which doubles as a club card. Will it adjust then, given that I'm paying at the same time as scanning the club card?

Totally fair dos. I love M&S food! I go in at 7pm sometimes to get the reduced stuff.

I don't shop much in boots as I get all my products from a local hair shop (terrible afro hair selection in boots!) but from what I can tell they are a bit softer with their marketing.

@RampantIvy

Some of you must spend a fortune in Tesco to get enough points to fly first class or pay for the Eurotunnel.

I'm not loyal to one supermarket and have never found the club card points useful for anything other than money off my grocery bill.

No, just an ordinary budget. I use a Tesco credit card for my general shopping too, which maximises points. I don't have a problem with them knowing about my shopping habits because they're pretty habitual and not really influenced by offers and advertising.
3CCC · 30/04/2021 23:07

@ghostsliveinmyhouse

Why wouldn't you want a Clubcard?

I get money off coupons in the post, and my points get me free meals or days out.

This

Also it's my nearest supermarket by about 3 or 4 miles

felineflutter · 30/04/2021 23:08

Yes I hate it. I don't shop there at all now.

CandyLeBonBon · 30/04/2021 23:10

Clubcard pays for my Christmas dinner and
bits every year! I'm not knocking it!

dementedpixie · 30/04/2021 23:13

Tesco is my nearest big supermarket so of course we shop there. There is a small Morrisons (have their card too), small asda, lidl and aldi. None of these are big stores and we couldn't get a big shop from just one of them.

I'm a family of me + toddler so probably hugely easier for me.

It pissed me off that I had to get a clubcard to get the discounts however I only shop there when what I need is on offer so they can swivel for all I care.

1idea · 30/04/2021 23:24

I think they bank on people forgetting to swipe their card after being tempted by offer prices. I avoid Tesco too now.

Doris86 · 30/04/2021 23:24

@HarebrightCedarmoon

I don't blame you. It's pissing about with pricing. Just make it cheaper like Aldi and Lidl and stop being dishonest with customers or wanking about with vouchers like Sainsbury's and Waitrose. Not long ago Tesco were notorious for unreliable and dishonest pricing. 20p each, 4 for £1 etc. This is no different.
Exactly. You might get ‘discounts’ and ‘rewards’ with clubcards, but it’s all paid for by Tesco adding a few pence onto all the items you buy in store.
RaspberryPies · 30/04/2021 23:25

You’re not the only one, OP. They’re essentially either taking more money or data from you. Data analysis from loyalty card programs is very valuable for companies.

CharlotteRose90 · 30/04/2021 23:29

I shop at Aldi and Tesco. I buy my fruit and fresh veg from Tesco . With the club card we like it as we save the points for vouchers at Christmas. Aldi should do collectable points too.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 30/04/2021 23:30

I probably tend to buy clubcard offers. So many loyalty cards seem to be rather pointless with no benefits (will waitrose free coffee ever come back?)

In a similar vein I do avoid shopping in Holland and Barratt because they seem to permanently have "penny sales|" and bogof stuff that I feel permanently ripped off, and that their prices must be way higher than the need be to accommodate the permanent discounts.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 30/04/2021 23:32

I don’t think normal Tesco prices are any more than normal supermarket prices though?
The Clubcard prices are just the special offers you get anywhere else at various times. Hardly some Machiavellian scheme.

All the supermarkets have stuff they do well Morrison’s fresh fish and bakery, Asda are cheap and excellent own brands, Waitrose must do something too.

Oh yeah Holland and Barrett prices are so high!

@Nith yes it will. You tap it once for points and again to pay.

LindaEllen · 30/04/2021 23:36

The Clubcard is free. There are other places to shop if you wish. That's it 🤷🏻‍♀️

It's not though. Just do your shopping but the difference is you'll get money off vouchers every few months. I don't know why having a card would make you spend more.
RedTartanLass · 30/04/2021 23:37

I completely agree. Why should I be charged more because I don't want to give my data to them? I find it very sinister and unfair.

I don't shop there now because of it.

Data mining wankers :)

Meh, I could never get worked up about something like this.
