To not want to shop at Tesco because of this?

Prices gone up generally unless you sign up to their club card. Significantly cheaper (reasonably priced) products if you're a club card holder. I reckon most people just sign up to the club card. I can't help but feel massively inclined to shop elsewhere (aldi) because I hate this kind of marketing. Not sure why it makes me feel like this. Pretty trivial. Maybe I'm far too stubborn. Anyone else feel like this or just me?

@suk44

Meh, I could never get worked up about something like this.
I wish I could be more like that. OCD and anxiety do me no favours. Overthinker.

Am I suing my Clubland wrong. I use it 100% of the time. I don't get lower prices for using it. I occasionally get vouchers in the mail and use those. Do people get automatic discounts for using their Club Card? 😳 what am I doing wrong

I don't use mine in store, only online but whereas before there used to be offers on items it is now called Clubcard price so may not be so obvious if the things you buy haven't been on offer and shop in store. It is probably not as noticeable in store but online Clubcard price is in red and also when you look at 'offers' they are all there in a list so easy to see. I also still get the vouchers with online codes to use at checkout but that is something different to the Clubcard prices talked about on this thread which are really just the old offers.
Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 01/05/2021 05:29

Surely loyalty cards aren't just about data, but also market share. If you have a loyalty card you are more likely to shop at that place (in theory).

MiddleParking · 01/05/2021 05:49

I’m completely baffled that you thought mumsnet was ‘different’ to other social media in terms of data collection OP. No one is doing this out of the goodness of their hearts I know it’s hard to tell from the UX

@radiateforme

I don't sign up to anything as they always find some way or another to email you and I hate spam 😅
DH has a club card and never gets spammed

It is obvious in stores because they show the lower price on the price label on the shelf.

So make yourself a new e-mail address specifically for shops.

And tick the box telling them not to contact you for marketing purposes

onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad · 01/05/2021 06:52

I paid for my entire Open University undergraduate degree on Tesco clubcard points when club cards first came out. That's not something you can buy with them anymore unfortunately.

I did come off the scheme for a few years for the reasons you're reluctant to join OP but recently re-joined because of the massive cost difference in being a clubcard member.

bruffin · 01/05/2021 06:56

I used to seawap my club points for airmiles. Ive been to the theatre, hired cars had days out on clubcard points

MeadowLines · 01/05/2021 07:03

I dont see how it's much different to loyalty cards where you collect points and then get a discount based on your points - boots advantage card etc.

I think you're clever enough to not get sucked in to anything OP. Its fair enough to be wary of anything that requires your details, but this one is pretty safe!

swampytiggaa · 01/05/2021 07:08

Morrisons are going the same way with their card in May. But actually it’s a worse deal as you won’t collect any points from them just have the special prices on certain items.

I shop online at Tesco and use my Clubcard points to pay for my annual delivery pass. H works there so I get discount.

Top up shops are from Morrisons. I work there so I get discount.

swampytiggaa · 01/05/2021 07:10

Oh and I only get emails from Tesco about my online delivery. Contrast that with Morrisons where I get one almost daily as a staff member plus several times a week as a customer.

Stevenetween · 01/05/2021 07:11

Have a Clubcard, don’t get emails or spam. I use the points for days out with kids and think that their loyalty scheme is one of the best.
Also, they give a ton of food to food banks. Lots to FareShare and the like. You’d be surprised at some of the big supermarkets who barely give anything.

lightand · 01/05/2021 07:11

@WellBucketChain

We have a Tesco credit card which is a clubcard and you earn points shopping in Tesco but also point for any other spending you do.

I don't care if Tesco have known for the last 20 years where I shop and what I buy. Plus like a lot of people we have never used the Clubcard points in store, always on the partnership deals.

This has paid for RAC full membership, magazine subscriptions, tickets to Legoland, days out and money off hotels we have stayed in abroad. You get 3 times the value of the Clubcard voucher, so £10 is £30. It used to be 4 times.

I also have a Nectar card for Sainsburys and a Boots loyalty card too. They give me points which means money off stuff I buy.

Information about you is collected all the time from a lot of different places. How many people think before they say hey Alexa or hey google or anything you type, websites you visit, places you use your credit or debit cards, your phone having GPS unless you have a brick.

Quite a lot of people think.
DeathMetalMum · 01/05/2021 07:21

I like it. I keep an eye on prices anyway mostly shop Aldi, Tesco and Asda so I know if the offer is good or not. Eg Tesco's have a club card offer on some coffee we buy at the moment however it's actually cheap in Asda. I'd began to buy less and less in tesco but some of the clubcard deals have changed that.

The other week a lady had forgotten her club card asked if I could scan mine for her. She said I could have her points so that she could have her discount.

memberofthewedding · 01/05/2021 07:32

When the pandemic began I found it very difficult to get a slot although I had shopped with them online for almost 20 years. I was a bit pizzed off by that so I contacted them on their CEO executive team to tell them I was mobility impaired/no transport. Got a very pleasant response asking me to give them my login script. My clubcard number would have told them a lot about my shopping habits and confirmed I was a single pensioner. Within 24 hours I had a dedicated login slot which allowed me to pick 4 weeks ahead. Still got it and cant complain about a company who value their regular customers over randoms.

Piglet89 · 01/05/2021 07:34

@Tibtab same on the nappies! Tesco Fred & Flo are very good I think.

@radiateforme

Aldi is so cheap I reckon I save that at least every 3/4 months by shopping there 😁 I'm incredibly stubborn about stuff like this. I turn adverts off, hate being pushed to sign up for anything I didn't actively decide I wanted, etc. Doesn't bother me what other people do I just wondered if there was anyone else like me out there. Hello if you're there!
If your already happy shopping at Aldi why this post? Seems like a post just to moan about Tesco's marketing. If you don't like it then fine, that's your prerogative but seems like you already made you mind up therefore a pointless post

I’ve had a Clubcard for years and not once received spam. The only emails I ever get invite me to book Christmas slots early.

I don't even need the dates the Clubcard with me as there's a Clubcard app which lets you zap it on your phone...

SeventyEleven · 01/05/2021 07:43

Tesco Clubcard has no downsides as far as I can tell. I have saved up hundreds of pounds by doing all my shopping there for years. Can be spent in store or tripled in value and spent on loads of other things like holidays and theme parks and days out etc.

The reasonably new addition of Clubcard prices is an added bonus.

I agree

MumofPsuedoAdult · 01/05/2021 07:49

I've had a Club Card since they were introduced and I have always felt like I was in control not the supermarkets (ie I'm happy to go to different supermarkets for different favourite products) and have always made the most of all of their deals. What I actually DO like about the Club Card is that it's created competition. They're now scared of Aldi so their Club Card deals are often 'price matching'. Saves me a trip to Aldi for the better deal on some products Smile
