To not want to shop at Tesco because of this?

Prices gone up generally unless you sign up to their club card. Significantly cheaper (reasonably priced) products if you're a club card holder. I reckon most people just sign up to the club card. I can't help but feel massively inclined to shop elsewhere (aldi) because I hate this kind of marketing. Not sure why it makes me feel like this. Pretty trivial. Maybe I'm far too stubborn. Anyone else feel like this or just me?

People aren't upset @radiateforme I don't know why you keep on saying that and putting the laughing emoji. I think 'bemused' and/or baffled is more like it.

CounsellorTroi · 30/04/2021 22:37

Oh and Boots and Holland and Barrett and got a Costa card too.

itsgoodtobehome · 30/04/2021 22:39

I have a Club card. Every year it pays for our Eurotunnel crossing to France. They basically triple the value of your points, e.g. £50 worth of points buys you a £150 Eurotunnel ticket. Can't see why anyone would want to complain about that 🤷‍♀️

Ok, upset the wrong word. Funny though people scrolling through my old posts to try and find something to contradict me. This wasn't meant to be such a serious discussion. That's the internet for you though! Sorry if I have baffled and bemused you.

I really think this is a none issue, if you don’t want to sign up and get the advantages it’s up to you, everybody can sign up so it’s not as if anyone is excluded.

Honestly I agree I was just curious to see if anyone else disliked this kind of marketing.

I get no junk mail, physical or electronic from Tesco. I like the free days out on clubcard vouchers very much, and with railcards on top I get much better value for money than I would doing the bulk of my shopping anywhere else.

LadyPoison · 30/04/2021 22:41

I'm not happy to give any supermarket any information about my shopping habits so I don't use loyalty cards, The paltry rewards they offer are far outweighed by the value of my data to them or they wouldn't offer them.

Our local Co-op tried that two -tier pricing thing probably 10 years ago. It didn't last long and was quietly dropped.

Oh and the last laughing emoji was because I actually found the posters last comment funny re questioning her loyalty as she had so many loyalty cards. It made me chuckle.

I don't blame you. It's pissing about with pricing. Just make it cheaper like Aldi and Lidl and stop being dishonest with customers or wanking about with vouchers like Sainsbury's and Waitrose. Not long ago Tesco were notorious for unreliable and dishonest pricing. 20p each, 4 for £1 etc. This is no different.

You explained it far more succinctly than I did!

Why are you against the clubcard?

I have it scanned in my phone, I use it like a digital loyalty card so don’t have to carry it around. Tesco’s offering isn’t really that different from M&S’s loyalty card (freebies and discounts) but you never hear anyone frustrated at Sparks!

RampantIvy · 30/04/2021 22:46

Some of you must spend a fortune in Tesco to get enough points to fly first class or pay for the Eurotunnel.

I'm not loyal to one supermarket and have never found the club card points useful for anything other than money off my grocery bill.

Thanksforthat123 · 30/04/2021 22:47

Totally agree. It really put me off.
I forgot my card, and then had to pay more whilst seeing the “this is what you could have won” price in my face. Urgh

I've never shopped at Marks so really couldn't comment. I think I just don't like being marketed at based on my spending habits. I think it's a massive issue trying to get people to buy more than they need. Consumerism etc. Just my opinion though, I do appreciate why people like loyalty cards.

That's a good point though. I'm a lone parent to a toddler. We don't buy much. Maybe one day I'll have a bigger family and feel differently. Who knows.

OP read The Undercover Economist it’s really interesting and explains loyalty cards and why shops use them, they are basically a why to see how much shoppers a willing to pay for particular items.

Floralnomad · 30/04/2021 22:53

If people are so stupid that they can’t work out whether something is a good offer or not what do you expect the supermarket to do , run a basic maths class in the car park before people go in . Aldi / Lidl no doubt have their place and have their fans but for those of us that want to shop online or would rather not queue to pay they have absolutely no attraction .

AnnaSW1 · 30/04/2021 22:53

Not me. I got the Clubcard and the good deals

KingdomScrolls · 30/04/2021 22:55

I have a clubcard, have for ages and have used the points to pay for days out, Eurotunnel crossings etc. I need to shop somewhere and if you cook from scratch and eat a variety of foods you can't get everything you need from Aldi, and I don't have time to go to multiple shops. I don't care if Tesco monitors what I buy to give me vouchers for things I buy regularly, that's a bonus surely.

Nith · 30/04/2021 22:55

I've never understood how the club card discounts work. I once offered my card at the checkout before they started scanning stuff and the cashier said it was OK, the discounts would be applied anyway. But how do they know you've got a club card if you don't have to show it till after they've rung everything up and you're ready to pay?

You should see how fast they scan your shit though!

Also have m&s sparks, my Waitrose and John Lewis loyalty, if I'm going to shop there anyway I may as well benefit

KingdomScrolls · 30/04/2021 22:58

I also don't want my shopping thrown down a checkout at me, I use scan and shop when I go to the supermarket. Much quicker as no need to unload onto the conveyer belt and repack, you also pack logically as you go around, frozen in one bag, fresh in another, cupboard in another, toiletries and cleaning etc in another makes unpacking at home quicker too and you need a loyalty card to do that
