To not want to shop at Tesco because of this?

Prices gone up generally unless you sign up to their club card. Significantly cheaper (reasonably priced) products if you're a club card holder. I reckon most people just sign up to the club card. I can't help but feel massively inclined to shop elsewhere (aldi) because I hate this kind of marketing. Not sure why it makes me feel like this. Pretty trivial. Maybe I'm far too stubborn. Anyone else feel like this or just me?

I think it's a brilliant idea and so glad that I save loads! Personally I think it's the best card out there - I seem to get good money vouchers and save xx

blissfulllife · 30/04/2021 21:36

It's a cheek because it's forcing you to subscribe to get their deals. No other super market does that. Sainsbury's had nectar card but you could still shop all the deals in store. I think they should be inclusive to all customers. You know older people find it difficult to understand and don't have email etc. That's them straight away excluded. In MY opinion it's a cheek and they will lose customers over it

Thatisnotwhatisaid · 30/04/2021 21:36

It takes about 2 minutes to sign up for a club card and you often get things for half the price so yeah, I don’t mind it at all.

blissfulllife · 30/04/2021 21:37

In fact they did...me lol

WarwickHunt · 30/04/2021 21:37

I stopped using ours a good while back because they rarely staff tills. Sometimes even when there's been someone on the till when I've gone in they've gone off-duty by the time I've finished (and I've had to make a fuss or leave the shopping in the trolley). Lidl and Waitrose are better for this so I always shop there now. But we all have our particular preferences. Lots of people prefer not to interact with staff.

TheDuchessOfBeddington · 30/04/2021 21:38

I also don’t get any spam from Tesco.

I do see what you mean about the Clubcard only prices but as a business they are entitled to charge what they like.

I get about £200+ a year from my Clubcard points to spend on Denby which I adore so I’m certainly not going to complain!

BrieAndChilli · 30/04/2021 21:38

Lots of places give discounts to members.
You belong to a golf club you pay cheaper prices than a non member, you buy a season ticket to an attraction you get half price food etc etc
They haven’t put the prices UP for non members, just made the deals available to Clubcard holders only.
I don’t really care if Tesco knows how much cheese I buy a month or wether I prefer x brand. Mumsnet probably know as much about you or Facebook etc.
Now I am aware they ‘sell’ the info on but it’s in a generalised why like women age 40 prefer pg tips than Yorkshire tea or parents with children buy more ice lollies in the summer etc.

@radiateforme

I guess I just don't like the whole loyalty scheme thing. I genuinely think if I had loyalty cards I'd spend way more than I do now without. Their aim is for a high cart value. I get it, just annoys me for some reason. Clearly I'm in a minority which is fine 😁
Why do you think you'd spend more? If I was doing my weekly shop there then I would just buy from my list and maybe stock up on things on offer, but then I wouldn't need to buy those things for a while so I wouldn't be buying any more when you averaged it out.
MWMWMW · 30/04/2021 21:39

It’s discounts in return for data.

Some people will think it’s worth it, some won’t.

🤷🏼‍♀️

moovinon · 30/04/2021 21:41

The Clubcard is really good.

You get discounts and collect points which you can convert in to money off your food shop or vouchers to use elsewhere.

I've never received any spam.

I didn't even realise that it collects points, and when I found out I had enough points to convert in to £115, which I paid for my weekly shop with.

I understand you feeling stubborn, but definitely just get one 😂

Thesearmsofmine · 30/04/2021 21:41

What’s interesting is the saving money illusauon. I just looked at the club card prices and at random picked out the fridge raider 6 packs of chicken bites currently on offer for £2 with clubcard, the same product is also £2 in Morrison’s and £1.69 at Ocado, Asda have the 3 pack for £1 so again 6 packs for £2. It’s all a gimmick!

PenfoldPenny · 30/04/2021 21:41

Ive had a tesco clubcard for eons. They dont send out annoying marketing emails so no issue there. They do of course analyse what Im buying but there are bigger issues with Tesco than that I think.

CervixHaver · 30/04/2021 21:41

@Sparklingbrook

How is it unfair? It doesn't cost anything to have the card. You want the deals you have the Clubcard, if you don't want the deals don't get the Clubcard or shop at other supermarkets. I don't do my weekly shop at Tesco but will go in to buy things that are a good deal when using the card.
What about some poor elderly pensioner who doesn't know how to sign up for one and is far too proud to ask? No younger family to ask? Do you think it's fair on them to be charged more?

What about someone with learning difficulties who doesn't understand Clubcards or how to sign up etc? Yet independent enough to not be accompanied for example - many fall into that category.

kowari · 30/04/2021 21:42

You know older people find it difficult to understand and don't have email etc. That's them straight away excluded. Many do these days. Or can be signed up by a relative or given a spare keyring clubcard to get the offers.

blissfulllife · 30/04/2021 21:42

@kowari but many don't

radiateforme · 30/04/2021 21:43

Yes but you know you aren't saving much, if anything... If you Google a lot (not a, but a lot) of their club card prices they're the same as the normal prices in other supermarkets. It's total psychological pricing and it clearly works!

I’ve had a tesco club card for years, they do not send me emails or texts as they do not have my mobile number or email address. Only communications I get are by post. What’s not to like??

PenfoldPenny · 30/04/2021 21:45

Cervixhaver Have you not ever noticed the staff working at the checkouts? Not ever noticed how they ask if you have a clubcard and if not would you like one? And even if you say no they often try asking again? And are usually very willing to help anyone who may have difficulty without a bit of help?

CustardGoodJamGoodMeatGood · 30/04/2021 21:46

I have a clubcard and have for years, we used to do all of our shopping in Tesco so was quite pleased when the CC prices came in as we saved quite a bit. However, we've now started shopping at our local Lidl and our weekly shop is a quarter of the price, yes they're Lidl's own brand or whatever but the quality is just as good. Tesco seemed to have put their prices up so much!

TheDuchessOfBeddington · 30/04/2021 21:46

@lazyarse123

I agree. I always think if they can sell stuff cheaper and still make a profit they should do it for everyone. It's like insurance and internet offers to new customers only. Just greedy.
I don’t know if it’s greedy to be honest.

They have decided it’s worthwhile making less money on first time purchases to gain new customers, and is treated as a marketing cost.

Maybe if it was for all customers they couldn’t afford to do so.

ragged · 30/04/2021 21:46

A lot of US supermarkets do this. I can't keep track of which ones do it or don't just realise when I walk in that everything is marked up with 2 prices. Annoys the hell out of me too.

Generally I loathe coupons, special deals, things to sign up for, etc. Just give me consistently low price relative to quality. That is what will attract me thru your doors and away from others.

radiateforme · 30/04/2021 21:46

Cross Post. This is exactly it. Making people think they are getting a massive bargain when they're not. Therefore higher spends. Thinking you're gaining from being loyal but you're just falling for a pretty clever illusion. Anyway, it's massively trivial I didn't mean to make people feel defensive re their club cards 😉 just my fleeting thought when I saw a couple of notepads for £3, £1.50 club card price, and £1 in Asda after checking (I'll be buying tomorrow!)

As I've said above, there are some who don't understand how to get the keyring and are far too proud to ask. They may even not know what a Clubcard is and think it's some kind of credit card and again, be too round to ask. Some don't have relatives. There's also those with learning difficulties

£115! Fantastic surprise!!

But next time have a look at the offers, as cash for your shop could be tripled by using it to purchase restaurant vouchers, rail cards etc. I triple mine with Denby and use for housewarming and wedding gifts.

mylovelydd · 30/04/2021 21:50

Don't shop at Tescos then, there's no gun to your head ffs Hmm

Sainsburys's prices are through the roof at the moment and Aldi still isn't paying the right taxes, Asda treats it's staff like shit by forcing them to sign draconian contracts but yeah let's moan about the spam emails...
