To not want to shop at Tesco because of this?

Prices gone up generally unless you sign up to their club card. Significantly cheaper (reasonably priced) products if you're a club card holder. I reckon most people just sign up to the club card. I can't help but feel massively inclined to shop elsewhere (aldi) because I hate this kind of marketing. Not sure why it makes me feel like this. Pretty trivial. Maybe I'm far too stubborn. Anyone else feel like this or just me?

Feel the same so I now shop in other places.

Sparklingbrook · 01/05/2021 11:42

This has reminded me I downloaded the Lidl app a few months ago. That seems to be some sort of loyalty/money off thing but I've never quite worked it out. I don't shop there much.

stackemhigh · 01/05/2021 11:46

What are they doing with all the information? Off to start a thread about it I think.

They use it to target product ranges within local stores that align with the demographic and affluence of the area (world foods, kosher etc), helps suppliers understand product trends so they can deliver new products and ranges according to population’s tastes, what pack sizes to make (single person household vs families), target consumer promotional deals, etc.

So we as consumers benefit as they can serve consumers better by offering that people want, but of course the shopper pays and Tesco makes money.

cardibach · 01/05/2021 11:49

@RampantIvy

Get good discounts on petrol quite often

Our local Tesco prints out discount vouchers for their nearest petrol station - 10 miles away. Needless to say these vouchers go straight into the bin.

Do you never drive in that direction then? Surely it would be worth using them when passing that way coincides with needing petrol? I’d keep them in the car for such eventualities, myself.
RampantIvy · 01/05/2021 11:53

Rarely @cardibach. It is the other side of town.

I don't get it. I drive out of all sides of my town. Like you, I wouldn't drive 10 miles specifically to use the garage, but I use all the routes at some point so I would hang in to vouchers for their lifetime just in case.

@kowari

You know older people find it difficult to understand and don't have email etc. That's them straight away excluded. Many do these days. Or can be signed up by a relative or given a spare keyring clubcard to get the offers.
Also Clubcards have been around for donkeys years. My 85 year old mum is hopeless with tech, but has had a Clubcard since they came out, as will many others; I doubt many people her age are suddenly going to start shopping at Tesco.
RampantIvy · 01/05/2021 12:09

@cardibach the only reason I would drive from my village along country roads to town and through town to the other side would be to go to Tesco. I have no other reason for being there. I don't understand why you have such difficulty in understanding this.

Yes, I understand that. I have started a thread, and can now see that it all goes a lot further than that. I will find the link at some point.

I think I just don't like being marketed at based on my spending habits.

😂 you’ll need to stop spending full stop then!

@ToastTriangles

I agree op, I think a lot of people aren't realising that it's £7.99 a month now for the clubcard plus that gets you those low prices on the yellow circles in store. I occasionally shopped there as its not my closest store but almost never do now since they brought in clubcard plus (only twice when I'd forgotten the change!) just feels like I'm not getting good prices and I don't live close enough to be worth £7.99 a month to get them so I shop elsewhere even when I'm in the area anyway now.
I'm a club and owner (not club card plus) and I always get the low prices in the yellow circles and I pay nothing for my clubcard
Atalantea · 01/05/2021 12:53

@lazyarse123

I agree. I always think if they can sell stuff cheaper and still make a profit they should do it for everyone. It's like insurance and internet offers to new customers only. Just greedy.
They are a business

They want your data, they want to know what people buy so they can sell more

It's up to you if you want to take part or not

I didnt mean to come across as sarky. I did wonder whether to put a thank you, after the I understand that bit. Sorry if I wrote the reply badly.
CherryCherries · 01/05/2021 13:09

I like the Clubcard and find it useful to be able to do the self scanner as you shop. Much quicker, I can pack my shopping as I go, check the correct price has come up, rarely queue at the checkout because you just scan the bar code on the till and off I go. Seems bizarre that people still fill their trollies, unpack it all at a till you have to queue for, then pack it all fairly quickly at the other end! Confused Especially during Covid times.

kowari · 01/05/2021 13:27

I tried the self scanner once but I kept forgetting to scan things and it was a nuisance to put things back when I changed my mind.

Sparklingbrook · 01/05/2021 13:33

I love Self Scan. So much time saved. No putting into the trolley/taking it all out to put on the conveyer/putting it all back in the trolley. Triple handling everything. There's never a queue to pay.

Scanning and removing things is really quick and easy-I use my phone so I don't have to touch the scanners

kowari · 01/05/2021 13:38

I'd have to pack it in my backpack from the basket at the end anyway. I found it a bit of a juggle too, I only have two hands for basket, scanner, and item, a trolley would be better I guess!

You can scan it straight into your backpack, you don't have to use a basket.
Fuckitfuckit · 01/05/2021 13:45

I agree.
I went to do shopping last week, DH was in hospital so I didn't have him of his club card, shocked to see some items were more expensive than waitrose without the club card discount.
Thought fuck it. Went to waitrose.

It just feels a bit naughty of them to charge several pounds more for some items if I've forgot the clubcard.

kowari · 01/05/2021 13:47

You can scan it straight into your backpack, you don't have to use a basket. That would take careful planning or stopping and unpacking and rearranging. I usually use the self checkout and pack at the end, it's very quick.

Trolleywool · 01/05/2021 13:48

Data is a hugely expensive commodity nowadays, all these cards do is get people to willingly hand it over in exchange for a few quid off.

kowari · 01/05/2021 13:48

I was also put off because I did the scanning in Waitrose once and was randomly checked and I'd done it wrong somehow so they had to scan everything again. I was mortified.

museumsandgalleries666 · 01/05/2021 13:58

@radiateforme

And sorry if it has been like this for ages. Haven't been in a Tesco since way before lockdown. Was a bit meh to see nappies at £9 for regular customers and £4.50 for club card holders.
Might have been a short term special offer.
