My theory is that voters don't care.

OP posts:
bert3400 · 28/04/2021 07:36

He has lied throughout is political career, people choose to ignore it because he comes across as a buffoon - a harmless clown, but he's not he's a calculating tyrant. Unfortunately he has enough Tory/media backers that this latest insult to the general public will be forgotten.

Quincie · 28/04/2021 07:38

No I don't care. I'm more interested in actions than words behind closed doors. I'm not interested in how much his flat cost to refurb, as long as the tax payer doesn't have to pay it. I don't care what deal he made with Dyson to get life saving equipment. I'm not interested in who he snagged on the family sofa.

I agree with this - what politician doesn't lie or have words taken literally that weren't meant to be.
His comment about bodies piled high rather than another lock down - there were tens of thousands of people marching on Saturday, maybe a million if you count everywhere and not just London, against the lockdown - so presumably a largish percentage of the population agree with him - but Labour etc try to whip up some frenzy over something said during an argument - if covid goes on and on in the end we will probably have to let the bodies mount so life can go on semi normally.
Gordon Brown was probably an honest politician but he was an embarrassment in other ways.

x2boys · 28/04/2021 07:39

@Brefugee

No, they all lie regardless of which party they are

there is "we'll reduce tax" in a manifesto and then not doing it for pragmatic or practical reasons

then there is Johnson telling provable and often pointless lies to make himself look better or whatever. It is a whole different ball game and the fact that people don't care just makes me relieved i don't live in the UK any more.

There is also Iraq have weapons of mass destruction ,so we need to go to war with them ....
Scarby9 · 28/04/2021 07:41

Yes. Very much.
I also care very much about the linked gaslighting - pretending they never said X previously when I know they did.
I actually get most annoyed when he says we'll draw a line under something and move on. No. You are in the wrong, and only want to move on because you have been found out and can't lie your way out of it. I am not happy about this and it is not up to you to decide when we move on.

nanbread · 28/04/2021 07:41

People who voted for him won't care much as it's cognitive dissonance to realise you voted in an incompetent, dishonest and elitist leader. All the signs were there when he was voted in.

ThetaSigma · 28/04/2021 07:41

I have never and would never vote Conservative, so none of it will change my voting intention.

I don’t care about the bodies comment.

I care that the refurb may have been funded by a donor in return for something, but as noted above, that’s nothing new - if you’re absolutely loaded you have far more direct access to the Prime Minister than the average taxpayer.

None of it is very surprising. Boris is unfit for office but surely people knew that ages ago?

OnASwankyMarleyPond · 28/04/2021 07:42

I do care, yes - I think a lot of what is happening in the Tory party at the moment is the result of having been too long in power. Ability and morals have receded to the point where the public has lost sight of what good government looks like.

It worries me enormously that we’re not holding our governments to account appropriately and that we’re using arguments such as ‘let’s just get out of this mess now and worry about it later’. There will always be a current ‘mess’ to focus on and I suspect the govt is largely banking on that. It seems public memories are short and there is no cumulative effect of all of the unethical and immoral acts on a party’s electability come election time.

RosesAndHellebores · 28/04/2021 07:42

I think it's reprehensible that the only career trajectory that is less honest and twists the facts more is journalism.

What I find extraordinary about Johnson is that a man who lives his life in accordance with the mores of a continental politician is so vehemently against Europe.

The only trustworthy politicians I can think of in my lifetime are John Major and Nick Clegg.

What concerns me more than Johnson is the fact that the root and branch membership voted for him rather than Jeremy Hunt.

I don't think we will begin to understand the full facts of the pandemic for 5/10 years and believe it's far too early to call whether it's been managed well, disgracefully or somewhere in between.

Turning back to the beginning, I was deeply against the original lockdown and it's length and depth. I am less sure now but without doubt we should have closed our borders swiftly.

Nitgel · 28/04/2021 07:42

@CovidCorvid

Yes I care a lot. He’s not fit to be prime minister.
Agreed.

Of course I care. You'd have to be an idiot not to.

milveycrohn · 28/04/2021 07:46

They ALL lie, except the prime minister's lies have (in my opinion) been more blatant than most.
I don't totally understand the house thing, as I believe all PMs redecorate, and especially Tony Blair, who I seem to remember charged the tax payer. So not sure what's going on here.
Regarding the 'bodies piling up', that's very interesting considering Boris Johnson had covid himself, and nearly died.
As much as I have disliked many PMs, none gave so blatantly had affaires as much as Boris Johnson, though apparently John Major had an affaire with Edwina Curry think this was before he was Prime Minister.
The constant shifting of the goalposts over Lockdown etc, must make many small businesses and especially pub landlords despair

Violetparis · 28/04/2021 07:46

I care but he's a known liar so all of this is no surprise. Don't think the majority of people care.

paralysedbyinertia · 28/04/2021 07:47

I care deeply, but I think you're absolutely right that most people don't. They wouldn't have elected him if they did.

bunburyscucumbersandwich · 28/04/2021 07:47

All politicians lie. And they will do so forever. It's part of the job description.

At the moment there's bigger things to worry about than some decorating (which has been paid for) and some accusations from someone who had to go for a drive to check their eyesight to Barnard Castle who has sour grapes.

Tryingtogetbacktomysize10s · 28/04/2021 07:53

I think that whether you care or not, if the overall aim is to oust Johnson, telling people how awful they are for not caring is missing the point a bit.

Labour are not going to win any voters over with this.

CallMeCleo · 28/04/2021 07:53

It dismays, infuriates and frightens me that so few people take any interest in who is governing this country. I recently met a woman aged 43, totally compus mentis (she was working at a vaccination centre), and she could not name the Home Secretary, or the Health Secretary, and she looked astonished when I stated that Johnson & Co are our servants, NOT our bosses.

And don't get me started on the airheads I meet in the hairdressers'.

Mydogisagentleman · 28/04/2021 07:53

I care a lot.
DH and I were wondering exactly what he would have to do to lose his job.

MoiraNotRuby · 28/04/2021 07:54

I care but I'm so unsurprised and have always despised him, my opinion doesn't matter as enough people vote Conservative to make me irrelevant.

What he should be doing is apologise and then arrange to pay our debt to Iran and get Nazanin home. Or resign and someone else do this

Darker · 28/04/2021 07:55

Yes I care. He is very convincing (or was) and tells people what they want to hear, then leaves others to clear up the mess. He lies to everyone, from his wives to the Ambassadors. When no one can trust a word he says any more government becomes impossible.

BuyYourOwnBBQGlenda · 28/04/2021 07:55

I think he's an absolute disgrace and would love to his his downfall, but suspect I won't. Makes me so angry that we aren't a decent enough country to manage to find an honest leader.

InsanityRocks · 28/04/2021 07:56

Yes, I do very much. it makes me quite depressed to read that people don't care about corruption and lies.

Marguerite2000 · 28/04/2021 07:57

Not really. I don't think politicians being bastards is necessarily a bad thing. It's more important that they get things done.

zoemum2006 · 28/04/2021 07:58

I care about corruption. I care about embezzlement. "Lying" is too general a term and allows them off the hook for too much.

Politicians must be held to the same standards as other professionals. If you are taking back-handers then you must be punished.

Cornettoninja · 28/04/2021 07:59

Yes I care, but I’m very fatigued with it all now. Part of the problem for me is there isn’t really a viable alternative to throw my support behind so it’s a lot of unfocussed outrage and exasperation to carry. I’m hoping a decent opposition leader emerges soon because at the moment they’re all pale imitations of each other.

itsgettingwierd · 28/04/2021 08:01

Yes I care.

Do I care more about it than I care about getting out of this pandemic? I'm not sure I do.

And I think that's why he'll get away with it and that's wrong. But we do need to prioritise coming out of lockdown and kick starting the economy.

LakieLady · 28/04/2021 08:02

@Overdueanamechange

Does it not concern you that someone else, who may be a Tory party donor, may have footed the bill and may now expect something in return? Government contract, relaxation of legislation affecting their business interests, that sort of thing?

Once that's accepted, we may as well start selling our votes to the highest bidder.
