Boasting In-Laws

I'm genuinely shocked that an in-law family member of mine has taken to social media, specifically Facebook, to brag about being mortgage free, at a fairly young age. We knew they were, but it seems in such poor taste, even more so in the middle of a pandemic when families are struggling. My ewww factor is off the charts, I thought she had class.

The inheritance was mentioned a couple of posts in on the first page, after quite a few people said that they find it braggy to show off about finances on Facebook.

It's hardly a drip feed.

It really comes down to the fact there's two groups of people:
People who think it's a bit braggy to show off your finances on social media
People who think showing off your finances on social media isn't braggy, it's just sharing nice things and anyone who says otherwise must be super bitter and jealous.

The fact it's an inheritance so they're celebrating the fact a relative has died and improved their finances makes an already braggy post even worse.

wow.. You do not like people disagreeing with you on social media about what other people post on social media, do you!

Your not just disagreeing with the OP, you are being nasty to her. why don't you jog on?

apooagnuandyou · 26/04/2021 12:22

some people think that discussing private family matters on social media is not as "classy" as the OP thinks she is.. Each to their own Grin

It's a public forum, designed for people to give their opinion. The OP asked, people do reply.. it's ok for not everyone to agree with you you know!

Helendee · 26/04/2021 12:23

Why shouldn’t she celebrate something good in her life? Good for her.

Where did I say it was not ok to disagree?

You said re the OPs DH how does he react when there are real problems? Losing a parent is a real problem you numpty & that's a nasty post imo.

You've given your opinion over & over, we get it.

So it's fine to brag about being mortgage free knowing that relatives of the deceased will see it, but anonymously talking about the fact that you consider it boastful to brag about being mortgage free is the issue?

rarat · 26/04/2021 12:27

🤔

Echobelly · 26/04/2021 12:28

I can understand being happy about that and wanting to share. Yes, it's a bit off under circumstances but I think she was just excited.

UniversitySerf · 26/04/2021 12:40

Another angle apart from insensitivity is she has now revealed she has no housing expenditure which means more disposable income. She is an absolute idiot revealing this. Depending on her relatives and friends she may in the future be asked for loans or expected to chip in more.

She may be able to rebuff but the amount of posts over the years where people get asked and struggle to say no. I only admitted to paying off my mortgage to my sister when she told me she had paid hers off. I didn’t reveal it was a decade before.

That’s what some people are saying - weird isn’t!!

To the people saying op should have detailed every minute detail at the beginning that’s crazy. She gave succinct summary of the issues and provided more details as the thread evolved. That’s what happens with grown up conversations, they don’t stick to a narrow path- we converse and debate and you know, empathise when needed.

Orchidflower1 · 26/04/2021 13:31

And yes @UniversitySerf is right- I would imagine if the rest of sil family are cut from the same cloth, they will be seeing ££££ and be arriving with their begging bowls...... I’m sure she’ll post all that on FB.

I'd love to know why my previous post was deleted when it barely quoted someone else's post which is still there Grin

I was about to say YABU as she is probably just delighted, but then I seen that it was from an inheritance, which isn’t really an achievement at all.
When I was in my early 20s, and about to move into a house from a tiny flat, we had a workman over (guessing he was about 50), he was telling me that he had just paid his final mortgage payment: he was a stranger but I was really pleased for him rather than jealous
