Boasting In-Laws

Coo5 · 25/04/2021 18:12

I'm genuinely shocked that an in-law family member of mine has taken to social media, specifically Facebook, to brag about being mortgage free, at a fairly young age. We knew they were, but it seems in such poor taste, even more so in the middle of a pandemic when families are struggling. My ewww factor is off the charts, I thought she had class.

I think people who are generally a bit happier with their own lot in life, would just eye-roll and scroll past
Perhaps, most people probably see bragging and think 'oh that's nice dear' whilst moving on, changing the conversion, scrolling on by, although AIBU is largely filled with 'here is something mildly annoying'.
I wouldn't say starting the thread shows any more jealousy than when people wish a colleague would shut up about their gap year, or think their brother in law should realise he's the only one interested in discussing house prices.

I'm not saying she definitely isn't jealous, just that any thread about bragging on here turns into claims an OP is jealous.

WorraLiberty · 25/04/2021 22:49

I get what you mean but I'd say that's because more often than not, it becomes clear that they actually are.

Or at least bitter that their own life is very different.

apooagnuandyou · 25/04/2021 22:58

People on social media can only be tacky because they are braggy, attention seeker because they are drama llama, or bitchy because they only go on social media to judge others.

You have chosen your camp Grin

apooagnuandyou · 25/04/2021 22:59

He came back from work this evening ashen, and livid.

how does he react when there are real problems?

LolaSmiles · 25/04/2021 23:00

I tend to wonder if it's less jealousy sometimes and more that there is some history between an OP and the bragger that makes mildly annoying boasting seem like nails down a chalk board.

rarat · 25/04/2021 23:02

I think people who are generally a bit happier with their own lot in life, would just eye-roll and scroll past.

This is it representative of RL at all, death & money creates big rifts in families.

In what circumstance is the OPs DH expected to be happy about the situation.

rarat · 25/04/2021 23:03

how does he react when there are real problems?

He lost a parent!

apooagnuandyou · 25/04/2021 23:04

but that's not what the OP is moaning about, her issue is the "boasting"!

Coo5 · 25/04/2021 23:04

@apooagnuandyou

It's his parent that died, not hers, what's wrong with you?

boasting in the context that the windfall is a result of a death!

apooagnuandyou · 25/04/2021 23:06

OP, we get it, you don't like people disagreeing with you.

No need to try to go for the drama when you chose to start a thread not about a family loss, but your need to feel superior because you don't approve of someone's social media post.

Coo5 · 25/04/2021 23:07

@apooagnuandyou

Because life is so black and white, my in-law should have given him due consideration, but instead BRAGGED that they are mortgage free, shocking, actually disgusting.

@rarat

read the OP's posts.

From the start, it's not a shock about the bad taste following a sad loss, its about her superiority about someone "lack of class". And none of her business!

rarat · 25/04/2021 23:08

I agree with her & think it's batshit to post about happiness re inheritance when someone has died & I also think it's batshit that some posters think the OP is the one who is in the wrong.

WorraLiberty · 25/04/2021 23:08

The opening post is all about 'class' (again the irony) and about families struggling in a pandemic.

The ashen and livid husband post appeared much much later.

1Morewineplease · 25/04/2021 23:09

Crass.

Coo5 · 25/04/2021 23:10

So what if it appeared later, life is a story not a paragraph.
OP posts:
rarat · 25/04/2021 23:11

The OP clearly didn't plan to go into the exact detail of who died & posted the below hours ago

Inheritance, I'll say no more.

WorraLiberty · 25/04/2021 23:11

Because life is so black and white, my in-law should have given him due consideration, but instead BRAGGED that they are mortgage free, shocking, actually disgusting.

But again, this only came up when the thread wasn't particularly going your way.

If you'd opened with how upset your husband is about the death of his mother and therefore it was in poor taste, instead of 'ewww-ing' about class etc, you might've had some different responses.

WorraLiberty · 25/04/2021 23:12

😂😂

apooagnuandyou · 25/04/2021 23:12

Oh come on, the thread starts about how superior you are,

forever mindful of just how difficult it has been for some people. It just seems so utterly tactless.

Funny how being upset about a husband suffering a loss wasn't important let alone mention until too many posters disagree with the OP...

rarat · 25/04/2021 23:13

And none of her business!

Why is it none of her business? That's literally applicable to virtually every AIBU thread but only comes out on the social media & benefit cheat threads. Odd.

apooagnuandyou · 25/04/2021 23:14

So what if it appeared later, life is a story not a paragraph.

but you have now replied to your own question, now you too are trying to make yourself feel important on social media with this thread Grin

rarat · 25/04/2021 23:14

But again, this only came up when the thread wasn't particularly going your way.

Are we on the same thread? before the OP mentioned inheritance virtually every poster agreed with her.

Coo5 · 25/04/2021 23:15

I couldn't give a s**t whether the thread is going my way, and you somehow seem to have taken on the role of judge and jury here.
