Tens of thousands of people protested in London yesterday, why isn’t it in the news?

What is going on with the news these days? Whether or not you agree with anti restriction protests, surely the public have a right to be informed about a protest that large? I’m feeling increasingly uncomfortable with the censorship. Anyone else?

Why were they wearing yellow stars?

One covid-denier I was talking to on MN thinks that the world is secretly run by a Jewish sex cult and covid is part of their plan to turn the human race into cyborgs.

I wish this was a lie but it's not, and it was a poster who had been here for years.

So I suspect that the yellow stars are not just a crass appropriation of the Holocaust by the naive, but also some of them are massively anti-Semitic. I guess that usually goes hand-in-hand with being conspiracy theorists (New World Order etc) so shouldn't be a surprise, but it's always depressing.

SquirmOfEels · 25/04/2021 09:17

There’s no real-world evidence they are actually protective

Big lie technique?

Suggest people look at BMJ, Lancet, Nature and scores of peer reviewed articles, all of which are readily available via google which demonstrate the effectiveness of masks

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 25/04/2021 09:17

I am horrified at the trivialising of the yellow star.

Maireas · 25/04/2021 09:18

You're right, @noblegiraffe. If they're conspiracy theorist dimwits there's not much of a stretch to Holocaust denial and other antisemitic slurs.

UnsolicitedDickPic · 25/04/2021 09:19

Couple of these threads this morning; all professing faux naivety, "I don't understand why this isn't in the news? 🤔". Whatever your thoughts on the lockdown, whether you think they were worthwhile or not, comparing them and the prospect of a vaccine passport, to the plight of the Jews during WWII is beyond sickening.

longwayoff · 25/04/2021 09:20

I know about it. I wasn't there. I heard about it on news reports. It sounds as if it was attended by some particularly unsavoury people OP. You need better, and better informed, friends.

serin · 25/04/2021 09:21

As someone who has worked in a covid unit for most of last year, I seem to be surrounded by folk who's view of the pandemic is informed by truth, research and (sadly) watching people suffer.

I think that marches like this absolutely should be reported as I had no idea there were so many dick heads still out there.

I also had no idea what the yellow stars meant until I saw this thread. I don't want to be ignorant of such things.

Cornettoninja · 25/04/2021 09:22

It’s a really annoying tactic to try and spin this movement as an oppressed resistance when it’s clearly not the case. I’m getting the impression that there’s a large need to be seen as freedom fighters when that’s not really the case is it? It’s coming across as dim and immature tbh.

There’s an irony in a load of people trying to tell me I’m being lied to (and of course a sheep) whilst threads like this are trying to lead me to believe things that aren’t true. I would suggest making sure you’re facts are 100% if this is a cause you want to promote.

UnsolicitedDickPic · 25/04/2021 09:23

@noblegiraffe And the ones who have taken the Great Reset (a real idea about how to move society on in an age of increased digitisation/climate crisis) and extrapolated from that the notion that a secret cabal is going to reset the world "and they're not even hiding it! It's all on their website!"

WeAllHaveWings · 25/04/2021 09:23

I am in Scotland and saw the London and smaller Glasgow protests on a UK news feed can't remember where.

frumpety · 25/04/2021 09:25

So

no to masks
no to social distancing
no to vaccines
no to vaccine passports ( if we ever get them )
no to lockdowns
no to covid ( fairly sure they would say its just like flu or made up )
no to not being able to protest ( even though allegedly a million people turned up ! )

Have I missed anything ?

That a load of people think the above, isn't new News is it ?

Joeblack066 · 25/04/2021 09:25

@Ostryga

Some were wearing yellow stars. Middle class white people of course.

That I cannot wrap my head around, their sheer stupidity, awful, disgusting behaviour.

100% agree with you. Horrific.
Lockheart · 25/04/2021 09:28

These kinds of threads are always ridiculous. "Why isn't not in the news?".

It literally is, take your blinkers off. No-one with the most tenuous interest in current events could have missed this yesterday. Just because you managed to miss it does not mean it's being censored.

A cursory glance at various papers this morning shows the story being run by the guardian, the telegraph, and the daily mail.

And thankfully those stories are focussing on the police who were injured, not the dregs of society dressing up in yellow stars intimidating the public.

Nith · 25/04/2021 09:28

It certainly wasn't tens of thousands of people, that's wishful thinking by Fox and his idiot friends. And it was on the BBC news, albeit relegated rather low down the schedule by things like the situation in India, which rather points up the sheer folly of the protesters.

Bouledeneige · 25/04/2021 09:28

I don't agree with the protestors in any way but it is censorship not to mention or cover it properly.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 25/04/2021 09:29

I was out with the dog at a training course all day and even I noticed it on the news, radio and television. So that's both BBC transmission types.

And yes, e-news has had a lot on it too!

You might be right @Lesserspottedmama widen your news reading Smile

JassyRadlett · 25/04/2021 09:29

Have I missed anything ?

Only ‘Yes to casual antisemitism.’

Nesbo · 25/04/2021 09:30

It wasn’t “tens of thousands”, estimates put it at about 10,000.

So about 0.01% of the population, slightly larger than a capacity crowd at a Leyton Orient football match are pissed off about a topic which is being used as part of our now never-ending culture wars.

Can someone explain to me why they think that SHOULD have been all over the news? Seems to me it got mentioned about as much as it deserved.

GrammarTeacher · 25/04/2021 09:30

@Bouledeneige it wasn't censored. In the slightest. It was covered by all major news outlets. Just not the top story due to their being more important things going on.

JassyRadlett · 25/04/2021 09:31

I don't agree with the protestors in any way but it is censorship not to mention or cover it properly.

What’s ‘properly’?

When does an editorial decision (oh it’s just another march by this group, nothing new to see here) cross into censorship (definitely don’t give them any media coverage, colluding across competing media outlets)?

ChequerBoard · 25/04/2021 09:31

@Gladimnotcampinginthisweather

I am horrified at the trivialising of the yellow star.

Same here. I am actually properly shocked that anyone would be so crass and insensitive.

Lockheart · 25/04/2021 09:32

@Bouledeneige

I don't agree with the protestors in any way but it is censorship not to mention or cover it properly.
That's not what censorship is. The protests were widely publicised in the media, on social media, and livestreamed on YouTube.

That is not censorship. Censorship would the the government not allowing the protests to be covered by media, social media, or livestreamed.

Anniegetyourgun · 25/04/2021 09:33

I'm guessing the majority of the YANBU votes were from casual readers who took the OP at face value and agreed that such events should be mentioned in the news. Others, like me, will have read on and maybe followed a link or two or even read their own newspapers or newsfeeds before voting, and realised that guess what - it was.

I admit that on first reading the thread title I said to myself "I bet it jolly well is in the news", and so it proved. But it still isn't interesting. Well, interesting enough to bother to have a pop at it while browsing Mumsnet, maybe. But not really news news.

Nith · 25/04/2021 09:33

Strange how all the people who insist that lockdown isn't needed aren't willing to volunteer in hospitals or in India.
