Tens of thousands of people protested in London yesterday, why isn’t it in the news?

What is going on with the news these days? Whether or not you agree with anti restriction protests, surely the public have a right to be informed about a protest that large? I’m feeling increasingly uncomfortable with the censorship. Anyone else?

OP posts:
frumpety · 25/04/2021 07:27

I would be interested to hear their points of what they feel so strongly about now things are starting to lift.

I must admit I wondered the same. Restrictions are lifting, tens of thousands of people have been able to protest all at once, what is it that they can't yet do and won't be able to do in the next few weeks that they are so angry about ?

anon12345678901 · 25/04/2021 07:28

It was on the news but even if they hadn't reported it, I'd have been glad. Sick of seeing these kind of selfish people who have no regard for science, other people's health and also the police who have to try and disperse the crowds.

TheCaddieisaBaddie · 25/04/2021 07:29

Maybe the news people felt it was more worthy to give airtime and raise awareness of what it happening in India currently than give it to them, unfortunately it was not a slow news day.

saraclara · 25/04/2021 07:31

Well I've just been reading about it in the Guardian, so I don't know why you think it's not been reported.

SquirmOfEels · 25/04/2021 07:35

I guess because OP is trying to make a public int about censorship, despite there being none in this case

(a quick Google tells you which print media have covered this, and it was on broadcast news least night)

But despite that, it's 62% with OP (despite her conceding that she might need to read/watch more reporting)

Which did rather leave me wondering if the issue here was the lack of favourable reporting, rather than an absence of reports?

ajaiahehssk · 25/04/2021 07:36

I read about it in the news yesterday.

JassyRadlett · 25/04/2021 07:39

I’m quite ok with media making the editorial decision (nb: not censorship) not to promote the actions and views of racists.

Of course they have given plenty of column inches to these horrific people.

FlyingBurrito · 25/04/2021 07:40

I've been reading about it on the DM online but as mumsnetters never look at it maybe ithat's classed as not being reported Smile
Chloemol · 25/04/2021 07:41

There is always protests of one sort or another going on. Personally I don’t care and am not interested. It never has any effect

blobblob · 25/04/2021 07:41

I saw it on the news - various sites and on the radio

I agree.

I saw Lawrence Fox is also (falsely) claiming censorship.
But his real issue is the main stream media didn't interview him. This has really annoyed him.

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 25/04/2021 07:42

I watched some livestream on You Tube. It all looked very orderly except for two people setting off smoke flares. When was the trouble that led to Police being injured?

Pinchoftums · 25/04/2021 07:45

I've seen this said a few times about this protest. Seriously have these people never been on protest before. Very rarely do they make the news. I probably been to about 30 protests in my life and probably only a quarter of them are picked up by national press. Everyone's a bit bored by these people as well because they I have such a large voice on social media already.

Cornettoninja · 25/04/2021 07:51

It has been in the news you doughnut.

FourEyesGood · 25/04/2021 07:53

These fuckwits are all over the media, more’s the pity.

Maireas · 25/04/2021 07:54

@Ostryga

Some were wearing yellow stars. Middle class white people of course.

That I cannot wrap my head around, their sheer stupidity, awful, disgusting behaviour.

That's what shocked me. As if being in lockdown and asked to wear a mask were in anyway comparable. Vile people.
SaskiaRembrandt · 25/04/2021 07:55

As PP have said, it was covered. I'm not sure why because other protests about issues that would have greater support amongst the general public are not covered at all. Instead the grievances of these people are given a degree of coverage that is well beyond the level of support they actually have.

AffableApple · 25/04/2021 07:58

People who complain "it's not been in the news" about something are usually peeved it's not the lead story on the bulletin they're watching/listening to. It's definitely in the news Hmm

User135644 · 25/04/2021 08:00

Why draw attention to so many people breaking the law? The protest was illegal.

User135644 · 25/04/2021 08:02

@Lesserspottedmama

Clearly I need to diversify where I get my news from. BBC news have said nothing about it. Seems like an awful lot of people to write them all off as morons and idiots. I would be interested to hear their points of what they feel so strongly about now things are starting to lift.
They're bored and impatient and wanted to mix in big groups. This is their way.
MarshaBradyo · 25/04/2021 08:08

As everyone has said it was in the news

But most news consumers are bored with or uninterested with the views of these idiots so it’s not provoking the reaction they’d like.

SquirmOfEels · 25/04/2021 08:12

I wonder if the complaint about 'censorship' is actually related to the London Mayoral elections in 11 days time?

News channels being determined in not allowing an individual candidate to gain personal coverage by supporters of his cause holding a demonstration.

But the protests themselves were reported on. As were the number of injured police.

Persephoned · 25/04/2021 08:14

It has been on the news.

There have also been several protests about this in the last year, again all on the news

www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-54310520

www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-56469246

www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-london-55116470

As pp said - there are frequent demos/protests about all sorts of issues. A public protest is not in and of itself huge news - I think the coverage has been pretty good. I wouldn’t expect a small scale march to be leading news bulletins.

whatswithtodaytoday · 25/04/2021 08:16

The BBC routinely do not cover protests, especially while they're going on. They might get s mention on the 10 o clock news if everyone has dispersed.

I've marched against austerity and Brexit and there was almost no coverage.

Stoptalkingtome · 25/04/2021 08:16

Maybe because it's not fair to mock people who have donated their brains to YouTube. I've never seen so many below average intelligence people in one place before.
