Tens of thousands of people protested in London yesterday, why isn’t it in the news?

What is going on with the news these days? Whether or not you agree with anti restriction protests, surely the public have a right to be informed about a protest that large? I’m feeling increasingly uncomfortable with the censorship. Anyone else?

OP posts:
MarshaBradyo · 25/04/2021 09:33

@Bouledeneige

I don't agree with the protestors in any way but it is censorship not to mention or cover it properly.
In what way wasn’t it covered?
Anniegetyourgun · 25/04/2021 09:35

... meant to add in my first paragraph, YANBU voters may not all agree with the protest itself, just that it should be talked about. Which is fair enough.

MarshaBradyo · 25/04/2021 09:35

Personally I want to know about India than this. News outlets know where the demand is and it’s not interest in these people.

SaskiaRembrandt · 25/04/2021 09:35

Thinking more about it- given the optics of what appears to be a bunch of anti-semites harassing shoppers and attacking the police, one would think they'd be better off if the 'protest' wasn't covered by the media.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 25/04/2021 09:36

@SquirmOfEels

There’s no real-world evidence they are actually protective

Big lie technique?

Suggest people look at BMJ, Lancet, Nature and scores of peer reviewed articles, all of which are readily available via google which demonstrate the effectiveness of masks

Yes! And is doing the same on other threads too!

I was just reading back and forth to be sure I had the right name!

Cactus1982 · 25/04/2021 09:36

Maybe those idiots protesting should take a look at what’s going on India? Then they might have a good of what would’ve happened here if we hadn’t locked down when we did.

OTOH, this story was major enough that it has been covered in India

m.economictimes.com/news/international/world-news/coronavirus-lockdown-thousands-in-london-protest-against-remaining-uk-covid-restrictions/videoshow/82238236.cms

Along with coverage here (BBC, ITV, SKY, The Guardian, The Independent, London Evening Standard, The Telegraph, The Sun, The Express and more, and is on the international news wires eg Reuters.

I really don't get why that's insufficient for a small demonstration in London, though I think that reporting when police are injured in the line of duty is a good thing

borntobequiet · 25/04/2021 09:40

@Nesbo

The estimates ive seen put the number at about 10,000. Where is OP getting “tens of thousands” from? Is that just spreading disinformation?
10000 is tens of thousands. Tens of thousands of numpties. But it’s true that any sort of protest in this country is routinely ignored by the BBC.
saraclara · 25/04/2021 09:41

@Bouledeneige

It was mentioned. It was covered properly by all the mainstream media. There was no censorship.

But "10,000 people have another demonstration just like the others they've already had in the past" was not the most important event yesterday so was not one of the top three stories. I still managed to hear about it though.

murbblurb · 25/04/2021 09:44

10000 ignorant, entitled conspiracy theorists who didn't listen at school and are unable to understand basic science. And every single one is either an anti-Semite or supports anti semitism by being there and not trying to stop the yellow stars.

If you took part, you are scum. I would wish covid on you but you'd only spread it around.

Cornettoninja · 25/04/2021 09:44
@noblegiraffe And the ones who have taken the Great Reset (a real idea about how to move society on in an age of increased digitisation/climate crisis) and extrapolated from that the notion that a secret cabal is going to reset the world "and they're not even hiding it! It's all on their website!"
Given who is set to lose out in the face of measures to combat climate change (industrialising nations and large corporations) I think the more likely ‘conspiracy’ around the ‘great reset’ is a targeted social media campaign by interested parties. I think some people supportive of these opinions would be horrified to find out they’re basically a mouthpiece for regimes that stand to lose a lot of money in the face of climate change impact strategies. I realise how conspiratorial that sounds but I’m also amazed at how the evidence presented over recent years on how social media is being heavily manipulated seems to have completely passed people by.

I think most have heard of Cambridge Analytica but don’t really understand why they’re a problem beyond some idea of personal data being collected. What it was used for isn’t widely acknowledged despite it being very well understood. It’s akin to subliminal advertising which is regulated in the UK.

The success of using personal data to sway public opinion has been expanded on with the use of bots and paid employees to interact online. For instance there is a healthy market in previously used accounts on Reddit and Twitter and I don’t doubt in other quarters to. It’s actually quite impressive, or would be if it wasn’t so depressing.

SquirmOfEels · 25/04/2021 09:46

10000 is tens of thousands

No, it's 1x ten thousand

Tens (plural) of thousands means 2x 10k or more

Magnificentmug12 · 25/04/2021 09:47

Wearing yellow stars, that’s terrible. Restrictions are not the same as gas chambers and slaughter.

ShrinkingViolet9 · 25/04/2021 09:48

A third of p7 of the Sunday Times print edition is taken up by a photo from yesterday's protest.

UsedUpUsername · 25/04/2021 09:51

@Nith

Strange how all the people who insist that lockdown isn't needed aren't willing to volunteer in hospitals or in India.
Can I volunteer in a hospital in Sweden or Florida then?

(And for the record, the situations in Florida and India are really not comparable to the UK)

SquirmOfEels · 25/04/2021 09:52

Actually, I wonder if there's any form of correlation between those who cannot accept the evidence of actual links to established MSM sites to articles about this, and those who deny there is evidence of effectiveness of measures to break transmission chains

paralysedbyinertia · 25/04/2021 09:57

I saw it on the news. The protesters who they interviewed came across as absolute fuckwits. Seriously stupid people. I found myself wondering if all ten thousand were like that, or if they had deliberately picked out the stupidest ones.

Idiocracy is a terrible film but it’s an interesting premise.
PrelovedWithValue · 25/04/2021 10:01

The only reason I know about it is because it was on the news. YABU.

MarcelinesMa · 25/04/2021 10:05

It was on sky news. So yes it was on the news. There’s other things going on right now though including our corrupt prime minister (again) and 5700 or so people dying in India in ONE DAY of Covid-19. I would argue those 2 incidents alone are bigger stories than those dickheads.

coconutmonkey · 25/04/2021 10:06

YANBU. Whether we agree with the cause or not, thousands and thousands of people filling the streets of our capital city in protest should be headline news.

borntobequiet · 25/04/2021 10:08

Anniegetyourgun · 25/04/2021 10:09

@Cornettoninja you're definitely onto something there. That's a logical conspiracy. You can quite easily see what somebody who has the resources to carry it out would gain from doing so. The "let's get everybody to wear paper over their faces when they go into shops" worldwide multi-agency conspiracy, not so much (as I was just saying on another thread).

Anniegetyourgun · 25/04/2021 10:10

No, that's a ten of thousands Grin
