I really want to know the answer to this, I don't think some parts of aviation and the travel industry will ever recover!

I think this is an impossible question to answer. ‘Most people’ is incredibly broad. Also, industries die, or change drastically, without pandemics to speed them along. It’s been the nail in the coffin for a lot of physical retailers, and the pub and restaurant industries have long been over-populated.

No, I think if anything the redundancies have been under predicted.

Report
DeadlyMedally · 24/04/2021 21:48

Most people will, just because it will be a pretty sure situation for the country if over half of people are unemployed.
The people remaining in employment will probably be too busy fortifying their homes to actually be concerned with keeping their jobs.
A lot of people will be made redundant though.

I think a lot of people will lose their jobs.

It's a pretty sound bet though that most people who keep their jobs won't give a stuff about those who don't.

@ilovesooty of course they will it will be friends/family members etc but I've seen comments like this before and I'm a bit Hmm at what 'caring' looks like. I've kept my job (public sector) but have had friends and sil lose theirs through this crisis. I've listened to them, emotionally supported them and encouraged them when they went on interviews.
Lots of people have said those with jobs 'don't give a shit' but short of cracking on with work and paying my taxes to support the welfare system it's beyond the control of individuals

EwwSprouts · 24/04/2021 22:01

I'm coming round to yes. A lot of money that would have been spent abroad this year will be spent here whether on holidays, home improvements or just good times. I've read the Bank of England policy is to keep interest rates and inflation low to help the economy. That is not a great incentive to save. I'm not saying there won't be redundancies in some sectors but I think there will be growth in others.

Report
Babyroobs · 24/04/2021 22:04

I think as many jobs are being lost in some sectors there will also be a lot more created in other areas like healthcare to get waiting lists down and cope with the mental health issues left by covid - bereavement specialists, support for people with Mh issues, people to help with social problems, housing specialists' to cope with evictions etc. How all this will be paid for I have no idea and that is a huge worry.

Report
ilovesooty · 24/04/2021 22:05

@nellly you obviously care about your friends and family members. One would hope anyone would.

This country however is already sharply divided between the haves and have nots. The electorate votes accordingly too.

I think the past year has confirmed my opinion that most people just don't care about others. There's ample evidence on these boards for a start.

How many redundancies have been predicted? And why do you think there will be more than forecasted?

Report
partyatthepalace · 24/04/2021 22:06

No I think there will be a recession, and some industries will be hard hit for some time.

Report
Echobelly · 24/04/2021 22:07

Obviously most people will be all right, but a significant minority won't be. Hotels, aviation, entertainment, nightlife and hospitality industries will be in the doldrums for a long time after this. More jobs may be created, but it is about quality, not just quantity - many new jobs will be insecure, lack benefits of any kind and not pay enough to live on, so people may have the, but they will not be 'OK'.

... because of Brexit as well as Covid, in the case of the UK.

What is it you would want people who keep their job to do?

Judging by the way the masses hit the shops when they opened, and beer gardens being full. Team that up with every single person I know itching to book foreign travel. I think everything will return to normal and people will get back into work

I don't believe that there will be any investment in mental health either. It will fall on charities and volunteers. Just as it does now.

Report
LemonSherbetFancies · 24/04/2021 22:16

Yes, I am starting to believe everything will return to normal very soon. The high street and restaurants are booming right now and the UK hospitality will o extremely well this summer.

I think your latter point has been very evident on here, the sneering pass remarkable types who want lockdown in their nice homes with secure wfh jobs to continue forever and make snide comments about people wanting to go to the pub/primark. Not one thought about the people who work there who will end up on the dole.
Report

Many jobs will certainly be insecure and people will be trapped in zero hour employment and universal credit.

I was made redundant around this time last year. Never in a million years saw it coming. So maybe even “secure” roles won’t be :(

Report
ilovesooty · 24/04/2021 22:26

@RedcurrantPuff I would prefer that lockdown ends gradually and safely , to ensure restrictions aren't reimposed but I agree absolutely with you that those who don't have to worry about their employment have shown precious little regard for those less fortunate. The sneering at and resentment of furlough has been horrible.

DP was furloughed a year ago then made redundant in June
He has only just found a new job but not started yet
I know lots of people who are out of work from various industries including retail, hospitality, automotive and tech

I work for an airline. I was on unpaid leave in March last year before the furlough scheme was announced. Been on furlough since. We have no flights from the UK so no work. If the country we fly to (and are based in) doesn't open before the furlough scheme runs out, I'll either be made redundant or be back on unpaid leave.

People have been resentful of furlough but without that we would have lost our house as I'd have been claiming benefits which wouldn't have gone near covering our mortgage. On 80% of salary it's been tough but manageable but I'm scared about the future.
