I think this is an impossible question to answer. ‘Most people’ is incredibly broad. Also, industries die, or change drastically, without pandemics to speed them along. It’s been the nail in the coffin for a lot of physical retailers, and the pub and restaurant industries have long been over-populated.
DeadlyMedally · 24/04/2021 21:48
Most people will, just because it will be a pretty sure situation for the country if over half of people are unemployed.
The people remaining in employment will probably be too busy fortifying their homes to actually be concerned with keeping their jobs.
A lot of people will be made redundant though.
nellly · 24/04/2021 21:58
@ilovesooty of course they will it will be friends/family members etc but I've seen comments like this before and I'm a bit at what 'caring' looks like. I've kept my job (public sector) but have had friends and sil lose theirs through this crisis. I've listened to them, emotionally supported them and encouraged them when they went on interviews.
Lots of people have said those with jobs 'don't give a shit' but short of cracking on with work and paying my taxes to support the welfare system it's beyond the control of individuals
EwwSprouts · 24/04/2021 22:01
I'm coming round to yes. A lot of money that would have been spent abroad this year will be spent here whether on holidays, home improvements or just good times. I've read the Bank of England policy is to keep interest rates and inflation low to help the economy. That is not a great incentive to save. I'm not saying there won't be redundancies in some sectors but I think there will be growth in others.
Babyroobs · 24/04/2021 22:04
I think as many jobs are being lost in some sectors there will also be a lot more created in other areas like healthcare to get waiting lists down and cope with the mental health issues left by covid - bereavement specialists, support for people with Mh issues, people to help with social problems, housing specialists' to cope with evictions etc. How all this will be paid for I have no idea and that is a huge worry.
ilovesooty · 24/04/2021 22:05
@nellly you obviously care about your friends and family members. One would hope anyone would.
This country however is already sharply divided between the haves and have nots. The electorate votes accordingly too.
I think the past year has confirmed my opinion that most people just don't care about others. There's ample evidence on these boards for a start.
Echobelly · 24/04/2021 22:07
Obviously most people will be all right, but a significant minority won't be. Hotels, aviation, entertainment, nightlife and hospitality industries will be in the doldrums for a long time after this. More jobs may be created, but it is about quality, not just quantity - many new jobs will be insecure, lack benefits of any kind and not pay enough to live on, so people may have the, but they will not be 'OK'.

@LemonSherbetFancies
Judging by the way the masses hit the shops when they opened, and beer gardens being full. Team that up with every single person I know itching to book foreign travel. I think everything will return to normal and people will get back into work

It's a pretty sound bet though that most people who keep their jobs won't give a stuff about those who don't.
I think your latter point has been very evident on here, the sneering pass remarkable types who want lockdown in their nice homes with secure wfh jobs to continue forever and make snide comments about people wanting to go to the pub/primark. Not one thought about the people who work there who will end up on the dole.
ilovesooty · 24/04/2021 22:26
@RedcurrantPuff I would prefer that lockdown ends gradually and safely , to ensure restrictions aren't reimposed but I agree absolutely with you that those who don't have to worry about their employment have shown precious little regard for those less fortunate. The sneering at and resentment of furlough has been horrible.
Quaversplease · 25/04/2021 06:41
I work for an airline. I was on unpaid leave in March last year before the furlough scheme was announced. Been on furlough since. We have no flights from the UK so no work. If the country we fly to (and are based in) doesn't open before the furlough scheme runs out, I'll either be made redundant or be back on unpaid leave.
People have been resentful of furlough but without that we would have lost our house as I'd have been claiming benefits which wouldn't have gone near covering our mortgage. On 80% of salary it's been tough but manageable but I'm scared about the future.
