To not put a tv in an Airbnb?

PutTheCakeDOWN · 16/04/2021 14:34

Pondering going find the Airbnb route. There’s no tv in the place we’d do it and it would be a right faff putting one in. I don’t watch loads of tv, and I know lots of people watch on tablets etc anyway.

For context, it’s a couples/single adult space in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

YANBU - tv not needed
YABU - get a tv you cheapskate

Its quite sad really that it seems impossible for some to live without screens and not just enjoy the company they are with or the surrounding area.

What's sad is people being sad because they cannot understand how someone can enjoy bit of screen time after enjoying the surrounding area and/or the company.
You can also enjoy the comlany while having screen on.

Honestly. This all or nothing is really ridiculous by now. It's not all screen 24/7 or no screen at all.

People can enjoy everything in a day. 🙄

Spidey66 · 17/04/2021 20:26

I own a holiday let, and yes it has a Freeview telly. It's one with a DVD player inbuilt and I provide a few charity shop dvds.

I have WiFi as well, so if you want streamed tv you can get it on lap top or tablet.

stupid AND patronising. Bravo Hmm

WaitingForNormality · 17/04/2021 20:35

God no - I wouldn't even consider an AirB&B with no tv. It's also a must for the WiFi to be decent too. I typically expect a smart tv at an AirB&B tbh as these days we all stream tv rather than watch it "live" too so iPlayer, Netflix etc all a requirement (and no, I don't really want to just watch it on my iPad if I'm on holiday!)

I spent the best part of a decade living in a cult, so forgive me for enjoying small pleasures in life like tv.
Rather sad than brainwashed.

We were trying to help the OP maximise her bookings, which means appealing to as many people as possible. As has been said repeatedly on this thread, if you don't want a TV on your holiday, don't switch it on. If you do, for whatever reason, then you won't book accommodation without one. Simple economics for the OP

randomsabreuse · 17/04/2021 22:45

The more outdoorsy (and rural) the more important decent internet is to me. Walking holidays involve a lot of weather forecast watching and second guessing to get to do the "best" walks - and it was a right PITA doing a walking week in Snowdonia with no internet at the cottage. Had a similar issue in the lakes as well, had to replan activities on the fly and scrabble around to book indoor things online in a layby after leaving for the day. Much better having access to MWIS and met office, plus the ability to book alternative activities from home so you can pack the right stuff rather than all the stuff!

minniemomo · 17/04/2021 22:48

Wouldn't bother me as long as there's WiFi

frogswimming · 17/04/2021 22:54

Well obviously it will cut out a percentage of potential customers, the ones that like watching tv.

cupoftea2021 · 17/04/2021 23:07

Some of us only get to watch a movie or save to watch something while on holiday- Netflix and chrome casting is big now days.
The amenities make a huge difference to selection no one needs to turn it on if it is on the wall. Taking up not much space.
Whatever there social status /children or not.
Some people suffer health and fatigue so we enjoy zoning out instead of a puzzle haha
Think of your reviews too.

GreenSlide · 17/04/2021 23:10

@saleorbouy

YANBU use it as a selling point of getting away from it all. As you say most people could dowload movies in advance to their own devices if they wanted Its quite sad really that it seems impossible for some to live without screens and not just enjoy the company they are with or the surrounding area. It drive me insane when relatives/friends ask for the wifi code at bbq/family functions. If I'm boring you or you don't like the company that much then please go home.

Well why are you sitting reading mumsnet rather than staring at the natural beauty outside your window? Isn't that rather sad?

Tomorrow I'll go into into my garden, admire the buzzards flying overhead, listen to the blackbirds and the finches chittering. Look at the holes in the lawn the cheeky squirrel has left when buying nuts and apples. Work on my flower beds, examine my seedlings coming up. Watch the bees buzzing past looking for handy flowers. Swat away mayflys, and feel the sun on my arms and face. Then I'll go into the house, flop on the sofa and watch Line of Duty at 9pm because as lovely as nature is, I'm desperate to find out what happens this week. And then I'll continue to watch whatever's on because it's nice and relaxing and engaging. I mean I could sit outside with a torch waiting to see if I spot a hedgehog or something but frankly I'd rather watch Gogglebox or Masterchef.

RampantIvy · 17/04/2021 23:31

There are some posters who seem to think that enjoying the outdoors, puzzles, mumsnetting and reading, and enjoying watching TV are mutually exclusive.

So it seems to me that these posters who act all morally superior are the ones who come across as hard of thinking.

I enjoy outdoor activities, gardening, walking, sightseeing etc. I also enjoy doing puzzles and reading. We have a TV, but don't watch it every evening, but we have the choice to do so if we want to.

Not having a TV is not a USP. Not having a choice is a negative.

Clydesider · 17/04/2021 23:35

I wouldn't book a place that didn't have a telly. YABU.

HappyGoPlucky · 17/04/2021 23:56

I think if you marketing it as having no TV & included other things (board games, telescope, binoculars, birdwatching books) you could get away with no TV. Kind of by making a virtue of it having no TV.
You might want to make it look like a deliberate choice rather than the fact you couldn't be arsed to get one installed! Grin

AndreaMarteau · 18/04/2021 09:17

Sadly you won't be able to watch it at her Airbnb though 😢

Burmilla · 18/04/2021 09:30

I must be a dying breed! I'd much rather read than watch TV.
My father used to call it "the idiot's lantern".

Yes, you're a dying breed and you're very, very special, congratulations!
RampantIvy · 18/04/2021 09:49

I like to do both @Burmilla.

I dislike the assumption from some anti TV posters that those of us who enjoy watching TV only watch soaps and reality TV. I have recently been watching a lot of documentaries on the history channel. I do enjoy a good crime drama though.

Well we know where your superior attitude comes from
Straussful · 18/04/2021 09:50

I have a tv with DVD player and a good selection of dvds.

Also rural with patchy Wi-Fi.

Newkitchen123 · 18/04/2021 09:52

One time we were booking somewhere we ruled one place out because it didn't have a telly. Sometimes it wouldn't bother me but this trip it didn't suit us. However that place had lots and lots of excellent reviews. So it obviously appeals to some people.
Market it as a peaceful getaway initially. If you get no bookings, put a telly in

I can do both. I can read a book and then watch a tv. Feeling superior now, because it seems like it's a special skill going by this "one or the other" thread😁

Exactly. I don't go on holiday to watch tele, but if the weather is poor we are more likely to go out to eat earlier and less likely to linger or stroll afterwards.

If we're back by 8:30, why not watch tv? It's a holiday, not Borstal.
