To not put a tv in an Airbnb?

PutTheCakeDOWN · 16/04/2021 14:34

Pondering going find the Airbnb route. There’s no tv in the place we’d do it and it would be a right faff putting one in. I don’t watch loads of tv, and I know lots of people watch on tablets etc anyway.

For context, it’s a couples/single adult space in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

YANBU - tv not needed
YABU - get a tv you cheapskate

Oh bad internet makes my solution less helpful :(

notacooldad · 16/04/2021 14:46

It’s quite a remote area, popular for walking and it’s lakeside so very picturesque. I think it would be a shame to sit in and watch The Bill but horses got courses
Don't be ridiculous.
You cant be out every single moment.
You can go out walking and enjoy the rest for a couple of hours before bed.
What if the weather is spectacular bad?
You can enjoy the area and also watch favourite TV programme on holiday!

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 16/04/2021 14:46

You need tobput a TV in. If people don't want to watch it they won't put it on. I think it will affect your bookings and you may get complaints if people haven't realised. They will just expect one.

HarrietSchulenberg · 16/04/2021 14:47

I would use the no TV as a marketing point, seeing as you're in the middle of good walking and outdoor activity country. Something along the lines of "getting away from it all" and "switching off". Maybe put in a decent DAB radio instead if you can get good reception.

No TV would actually be a bonus for me.

ninja · 16/04/2021 14:47

Why not put in a monitor and adapters for people to use as a screen from their own devices?

Most people don't watch live TV anyway

Char1tySh0ppa · 16/04/2021 14:48

I've been happy to stay in places with no TV

However, I would make it clear on your description

TherightsideofHERstory · 16/04/2021 14:49

No tv would be a selling point for me, in that kind of place would rather have local maps, books about the area, history of the area, that kind of thing. Go with the retreat angle, no tv, limited WiFi, sounds bliss to me!

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 16/04/2021 14:52

Obviously it's up to you whether you provide one or not, just make it absolutely clear that there isn't one and don't be surprised if it reduces bookings.
We don't watch a lot of TV when we're away, but we will have it on while we're getting ready to go out or if we're chilling for a while after a busy day.
I know a lot of people who prefer AirBnB over big hotels when travelling on business who would want a TV for evening entertainment. After a day looking at a laptop screen at work, I'd prefer not to use the laptop for watching TV.

See, I don't get this.

Surely you could just...not use the TV?

reluctantbrit · 16/04/2021 14:54

No TV and shit Internet would be an absolute no-go for me. I am not watching TV a lot but on a holiday, especially after a day on my feet walking or sightseeing, I like just relaxing and watching a bit of Netflix.

Most holiday lets we had over the last 5 years had some kind of Netflix, Free TV or similar and excellent WiFi.

Yes!! This is my thinking too!

I wasn’t sure because I hardly watch any tv myself. I don’t say that in an ‘oh look how cool and edgy and outdoorsy I am’ kind of way, I’m just not that bothered by it. It’s all misery and rapey and ‘you’re all killing the planet!’ anyway.

But I digress..! I’ll give it more thought. Thanks everyone, loads to think about

Personally I wouldn't care, but many people will so for the sake of sticking a cheap TV and portable aerial to the tune of a couple of hundred pounds I would definately do it.

notacooldad · 16/04/2021 14:55

Where did you get that fact from?

PutTheCakeDOWN · 16/04/2021 14:55

@StealthPolarBear

I started a very similar thread when we started Airbnb. The consensus was a tv but doesn't need an aerial - we provide a guest netflix account. Everyone seems very happy with that and obviously we don't need a licence..

Happy Airbnb ing. I really enjoyed it when we did it. Happy t answer questions if you have them.

Thanks that’s very kind :)

I do a fair bit of solo travel and a TV is pretty essential in the evenings when you're on your own and not going to the pub or restaurant with a partner.

StealthPolarBear · 16/04/2021 14:56

And then a tv licence too

PutTheCakeDOWN · 16/04/2021 14:57

The internet’s a big shit but not dog shit. We can watch Netflix....just maybe not on two screens at once..!

But if people don't want to watch TV or use the internet, they don't have to. There's no need to go somewhere that doesn't have it at all.

By refusing to put one in at all, OP is drastically reducing her potential market for guests.

Elphame · 16/04/2021 14:57

Don't have a TV at home but there is one in the cottage as it is sadly expected nowadays.

We had a very basic one there but I had plenty of feedback requesting something bigger and smarter so I've just put one in. I guess 190 channels should be enough for even the most addicted of TV watchers.

PutTheCakeDOWN · 16/04/2021 14:57

Big shit? Bit shit 😂

IHaveBrilloHair · 16/04/2021 14:58

I wouldn't book it without a TV.

StealthPolarBear · 16/04/2021 14:58

Ah in that case a tv and guest netflix sounds ideal.
That said our Airbnb wasn't the same sort. It was somewhere you'd stay to visit family, or for work etc. Not touristy.

BigPyjamas · 16/04/2021 14:59

I'd be surprised to turn up and there was no TV. And I would discount anywhere without one.

We don't watch tonnes, but when we go away it's nice to watch a film with a glass of wine sometimes.

My sister travels for work (pre-Covid) and stays in Air BnBs, I doubt she'd book one without a TV, particularly as a solo traveller.

Larryslockdownlunch · 16/04/2021 14:59

I have an apartment that I Airbnb and I get asked all the time if we have a TV. (even though it's on the listing and in the pictures) I just have the free view channels but I also provide a Blu-ray player and about a hundred Blu-ray Discs which people seem to like.

AryaStarkWolf · 16/04/2021 14:59
