To not put a tv in an Airbnb?

PutTheCakeDOWN · 16/04/2021 14:34

Pondering going find the Airbnb route. There’s no tv in the place we’d do it and it would be a right faff putting one in. I don’t watch loads of tv, and I know lots of people watch on tablets etc anyway.

For context, it’s a couples/single adult space in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

YANBU - tv not needed
YABU - get a tv you cheapskate

I would much rather have a TV so I have a choice - surely its better to have it and some people not use it than have people expect it and be annoyed/disappointed to not have it?

Equally if you have crappy Internet then I can't even bring my own entertainment - I think you need to have at least one or the other, even just so people can check the weather before they set out for the day.

Its not so much of an issue now DD is older but as a single parent, when DD was little it doesn't matter how long we were out during the day or what attractions were available, once DD was in bed I was stuck inside on my own for the rest of the evening.

As great as a book might be, after long days of entertaining a small child, sometimes I just wanted to relax, watch trash TV and drink a glass of wine. Even now (well pre-pandemic) if I go away by my self I sometimes want to enjoy a bit of TV in the evening to wind down, or I put the TV on when I get up so that I can have the news or whatever on in the background as I get up and ready for the day rather than doing so to the sound of other guests as the walls are often far too thin between hotel rooms in silence

SchrodingersImmigrant · 17/04/2021 14:54

I can't think of a more joyless way to watch something than watching it on a laptop or tablet with crap sound quality. I would far rather curl up on the sofa and be able to change my position from time to time without affecting my ability to see the screen.

Me neither.
My brother used to do that wanky "oh, Tv? Nah, we don't have that"😏. I did point out that they are watching everything on his 32" monitor which was the size of my tv at the time😂 Apparently that's "different and you know it". No.

RampantIvy · 17/04/2021 15:08

Don't you need decent internet to watch Netflix and catch up TV @RaginSpice?

Ellmau · 17/04/2021 16:29

People expect a TV.

Years ago the NT cottages made a point of not having TVs, but they eventually had to give in.

LimaFoxtrotCharlie · 17/04/2021 17:10

@RaginSpice

Sorry if someone has suggested already but - why not just get a smart tv? That’s what I have and have had in most holiday air bnbs.

No aerial needed (so they won’t get live tv but that’s not a bad thing as you won’t need to pay tv licence) but it has apps instead for catch up e.g. ITV hub, all 4, Netflix etc where they can login and watch.

Most tv apps are free to use too and if they want to watch Netflix they’ll already have an account to login to.

If there is a TV, I want to watch live TV eg the news & weather. TV apps just aren’t the same and I rarely find anything worth watching on netflix
Maggiesfarm · 17/04/2021 17:12

A bit mean not to put in a TV in my opinion. Most places have them and they are not expensive to buy.

StellaAndCrow · 17/04/2021 17:13

Is anyone else fancying watching The Bill now?

ancientgran · 17/04/2021 17:23

I've never seen it but I have been wondering about how good it must be for it to be quoted so long after it ended.

We've got a 50in TV but I still watch stuff on my tablet or laptop occasionally, usually in bed. It's fine actually. But agree it wouldn't be ideal for a family to try to watch films that way.

speakout · 17/04/2021 17:33

THis thread has inspired me to watch The Bill. Never seen it, but I will now put it on my list

IbrahimaRedTwo · 17/04/2021 17:34

No TV would actually be a bonus for me

That doesn't make sense. Anyone who doesn't want to use the TV can leave it off. It being there or not being there makes no difference at all.

With a TV there, both the TV watchers and non watchers are catered for. Without, only a small number are.

If you want to make your pool of clients much smaller, then go ahead. Not good business though.

IrmaFayLear · 17/04/2021 17:36

On holiday we often end up watching weird stuff. Normally one wouldn’t be on the sofa at, say, 3pm. The dcs fondly remember watching a Channel 5 murder mystery a couple of years ago in a chalet in a hurricane-hit Isle of Wight in August. The murderer urged her victims to take a shower, and then she massaged poisonous oil into them afterwards Grin .

safariboot · 17/04/2021 17:40

Eyeroll at suggestions of a smart TV when OP said their internet is bad.

poppycat10 · 17/04/2021 18:21

Some in the over 40s can manage this can but the majority can't. This is basic statistics; most over 40s are not in great shape even if you are

over 40s? I assume that was a typo and you meant over 70s?

Otherwise you're having a giraffe.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 17/04/2021 18:26

The poster seems to consider over 40s elderly. Unless they have made the same typo more than once.

tenredthings · 17/04/2021 18:29

Put a smart tv with amazon fire stick so they can access Netflix ,BBC I player, All 4 etc. through internet. If the internet's shit , I think that's a bigger problem. You can put an antennae on the roof to pick up a better 4g signal.

Frustratedbeyondbelief · 17/04/2021 18:31

I run an Airbnb .

You don't need a tv BUT you DO NEED TO SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOF TOPS !! Or you will get negative feed back and few bookings.

If I liked your place - and I KNEW there was no TV then I would book it. Otherwise I would presume you had one.

I would suggest putting it in the strap line..

'Fabulous rural log cabin (no TV) ' for example.

CandyLeBonBon · 17/04/2021 18:35

I think op has checked out!

Kdubs1981 · 17/04/2021 19:30

I presume you're in the uk? What happens when is pisses with rain?

Op is in Lala land. Probs nice weather all year around
Kapalika · 17/04/2021 19:39

Another Airbnb host here.
Yep, get a TV. If not you’ll find your bookings go down. As @Frustratedbeyondbelief said MAKE IT VERY CLEAR AT ALL TIMES. 😂

Prepare yourself. It’s a weird and wonderful world on Airbnb. Join the host only forums on fb when your listing is ready. Invaluable advice always.

Lubiluxe · 17/04/2021 19:49

When you say 'appeal to the minority' you do realise that it isn't a USP to not have a TV? Anyone who doesn't watch TV just won't turn it on.

I have to say, I am the most outdoorsy person going, I love walking mountains and countryside and love a good walking holiday. I still like to relax with the TV of an evening. It doesn't make me lazy 🙄

occa · 17/04/2021 19:54

YABU, sorry. We don't have a TV at home but I think it'd put a lot of people off a holiday rental.

Also you'd get bad reviews until you cracked and put 'PLEASE NOTE THIS PROPERTY DOES NOT HAVE A TV' in the description.

saleorbouy · 17/04/2021 20:04

YANBU use it as a selling point of getting away from it all. As you say most people could dowload movies in advance to their own devices if they wanted
Its quite sad really that it seems impossible for some to live without screens and not just enjoy the company they are with or the surrounding area.
It drive me insane when relatives/friends ask for the wifi code at bbq/family functions. If I'm boring you or you don't like the company that much then please go home.

IbrahimaRedTwo · 17/04/2021 20:20

It isn't one! Anyone who wants a tv free holiday will just not watch TV. They don't need the absence of a TV!
