To not put a tv in an Airbnb?

PutTheCakeDOWN · 16/04/2021 14:34

Pondering going find the Airbnb route. There’s no tv in the place we’d do it and it would be a right faff putting one in. I don’t watch loads of tv, and I know lots of people watch on tablets etc anyway.

For context, it’s a couples/single adult space in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

YANBU - tv not needed
YABU - get a tv you cheapskate

Sit and watch the bill 😂, I think the bill finished over a decade ago!

We don’t watch much TV on holiday but always appreciate the option, especially with our DC who wake up mega early.

@Movinghouseatlast

I run an Air BnB. It is a business and you are working in hospitality if you are charging money to the public.

Some people will book with no TV as long as it is clear.
.Having a Smart TV only needs a plug socket and Internet connection. I have this set up in one of my units.

I think if it's raining it's nice for people to have a TV. Lots of couples ( mine is couples too) walk all day and then watch telly for a bit in the evening.

A decent small smart TV is only a few hundred quid.

Exactly.

"Its not business" suggests intent not to declare the income and certainly a lot of "quick buck" holiday rentals are popping up for hobby landlords to make a quick profit. They rarely make good rentals in practice.

I would probably give a place with no TV and lousy wifi a miss, less because of the actual TV and more because if the landlord is too tight to put even a basic smart flat screen in the unit I'd assume they skimped on other items as well.

SavageBeauty73 · 17/04/2021 09:25

I wouldn't book it if it had crap WiFi and no TV. After a busy day, I love watching films. Please make sure you are clear that your WiFi is rubbish.

StarlightLady · 17/04/2021 09:38

It’s a case of meeting other’s expectations. I don’t drink tea, or use sugar, but l keep both in the house to offer to others.

cushioncovers · 17/04/2021 09:50

Yabu

Still laughing at this thread. It is a Ponce Beacon ! Who reads the most, who watches the most otters (in the dark) and who is generally more superior to anyone who likes a bit of television.

I like a get away from it all no mod cons place, but it has to be a) charming (not cheapo vinyl sofas and laminate flooring) and b) genuinely with a glorious aspect. A property albeit in an AONB but on a busy A road with an aspect of a bit of scrub is not going to appeal.

@IronedIngot

How old are your clientele? Really, no one under 40 uses a TV (unless you're prematurely old/lame). If you cater for the elderly, then include a TV.
Not my experience at all.

A TV (or bigger screen anyway) is much better to watch something together, rather than all watching on individual tablets or devices or trying to huff;e round one screen.

Rainbunny · 17/04/2021 09:59

I vote YABU but I mean it gently! I could get by without a tv in a AirBnb since we always bring at least one laptop with us but WIFI is an absolute dealbraker for us.

Abraxan · 17/04/2021 10:01

It’s not a business! 😂🙄

What is it then?
Presumably you are charging people to stay?
You will be receiving an income from the place I assume, and paying tax on the income.

Sbk28 · 17/04/2021 10:04

I go away to get away from TV and so on.

Couples and single adults are more likely to do that kind of thing. Several answers on the first page talked about things like kids watching TV - so be wary that many voters didn't even read your opening post.

What I find astonishing is the number of posters who are so far above watching TV, have so much worthier past times that they would never dream of watching the idiot box, but:
a) apparently have such little willpower that if it was there they would be forced to watch it, enticed by its demonic spell
b) are happy to fritter their time away on MN!

Even if that's true (and I doubt it), the 'over 40s' represent a FAR bigger clientele group than the under 40s.

I thought it was bad that MN posts were labelling over 50s as elderly, and now we have a post calling over 40s elderly. Just ridiculous. And the 'unless you're prematurely old/lame' is downright insensitive.

Hardbackwriter · 17/04/2021 10:36

If you find that getting away from TV requires anything more than turning it off then you need to consult either an television repairer or an exorcist.

They do have off buttons. You don't have to watch it just because it's there, as my dad used to tell me Grin

😂😂

This wankiness of watching movies on tablets and laptops and sneer at people watching the same thing on a tv is bloody ridiculous 😂
I prefer my movies on 50inch rather than 15inch.
Doesn't make me old or lame.

Insensitive but accurate. OP is running a business not a charity. Olds love big TVs. Young people don't. Know your market, make your cash money.

Can I help you install a landline while I deliver your horse and buggy? Competitive rates.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 17/04/2021 10:53

@IronedIngot I just don't get how you can call over 40s elderly, and you can still make your points in a nicer way.

I am fully aware of the need to understand the market. The over 40s is a much bigger purchasing group than the 16-39 age group, particularly as this isn't aimed at families. Plus those not working are likely to take more holidays/short breaks.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 17/04/2021 11:04

Well now it's clear @IronedIngot is just stirring😂

Ope came back for revenge? 😂

We regularly stay in a place on Skye that has no WiFi and intermittent mobile signal depending on weather conditions. It does have fantastic sea views, a TV plus loads of books, DVDs and Scrabble, so our evenings are well catered for.

I would put a TV in.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 17/04/2021 11:34

I a not a boomer gen not gen x you dumdum😂😂

The only nonsese is you op undercover😂

CounsellorTroi · 17/04/2021 11:35
@RockingMyFiftiesNot

I'm not stirring just trying to help OP make decisions unclouded by boomer/gen x nonsense or entitlement. Honest question, OP says property is in location of natural beauty, is it suitable for the elderly (e.g., rocky terrain, steep incline, lengthy paths, etc.)? Some in the over 40s can manage this can but the majority can't. This is basic statistics; most over 40s are not in great shape even if you are.
I thought I was used to the ageism on MN but this is jaw dropping. And nonsense.

Maraudery · 17/04/2021 11:41

We are big walkers and wildlife watchers, but would appreciate a tv.
If we have done a really big walk in the day then often watch a TV in the evening as we can't face anything that requires more energy!
