To not put a tv in an Airbnb?

PutTheCakeDOWN · 16/04/2021 14:34

Pondering going find the Airbnb route. There’s no tv in the place we’d do it and it would be a right faff putting one in. I don’t watch loads of tv, and I know lots of people watch on tablets etc anyway.

For context, it’s a couples/single adult space in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

YANBU - tv not needed
YABU - get a tv you cheapskate

@HarrietSchulenberg

I would use the no TV as a marketing point, seeing as you're in the middle of good walking and outdoor activity country. Something along the lines of "getting away from it all" and "switching off". Maybe put in a decent DAB radio instead if you can get good reception.

No TV would actually be a bonus for me.

Why? You're perfectly capable of not switching it on!
JassyRadlett · 17/04/2021 11:45

I'm not stirring just trying to help OP make decisions unclouded by boomer/gen x nonsense or entitlement. Honest question, OP says property is in location of natural beauty, is it suitable for the elderly (e.g., rocky terrain, steep incline, lengthy paths, etc.)? Some in the over 40s can manage this can but the majority can't. This is basic statistics; most over 40s are not in great shape even if you are.

Oh lovey. You don’t get out for walks in national parks or AONBs much, do you?

I’m 43 and I drag down the average age of the people we come across on fairly rugged walks by about a decade.

Ha ha!

Most over 40s can't manage it?! 😂
How ridiculous.

Definitely not a serious poster based on this!

Nanny0gg · 17/04/2021 11:49

The overwhelming response is YABU.

You have only gone with the posts that agree with you.

So what was the point?

MrMeSeeks · 17/04/2021 11:51

Yabu i would avoid like the plague

MrMeSeeks · 17/04/2021 11:54
  • Insensitive but accurate. OP is running a business not a charity. Olds love big TVs. Young people don't. Know your market, make your cash money.

Can I help you install a landline while I deliver your horse and buggy? Competitive rates*

What a load of bollocks.Hmm
I’m not old, i still want a tv.
Take your crap know nothing agism elsewhere.

Kokosrieksts · 17/04/2021 12:08

Not many people want to be out walking from the moment they wake up to then go straight to bed. It’s nice to have the option to watch a film in the evening. I think you are very much limiting who will book your property.

Yes, exactly. I'm 45 and a fat, lazy arse but the majority of ramblers and hill walkers I see out and about look like they're at least over 50 and some might even be in their gasp! 60's or older.

Unless OP lives halfway up Everest, which might explain the WiFi situation, that's a ridiculous statement.

IronedIngot · 17/04/2021 12:22

@AndreaMarteau cool anecdata? Cognitive and biomedical science is clear and not contested at all. Mental and physical decline sets in at 30, rapidly accelerating post 40.

This all depends on OPs property. Not everything is a gentle hill walk with few twists and turns to confuse.

Bugger.

I'm screwed then.

Had some frustrating holidays with no/marginal wi-fi and no mobile internet. Especially walking holidays when the TV weather forecast is not really that useful (want to check MWIS) and one of us has had to go for a walk/drive to get signal to check the forecast (again) before planning the next day (hill walk or lowland indoors or beach or just low level with waterproofs.

Not having internet has been bad for catching up with study (DH) too.

Usually booked by my PILs and they aren't bothered by TV/WiFi but then ask us what the weather will be as if we can tell...

From experience the weather forecast at noon while out is often worse than useless in the west of the UK...

SchrodingersImmigrant · 17/04/2021 12:50

This is honestly 5* effort just to be able to not to put a tv in a non-business but a business but not a business airbnb😂

SarahBellam · 17/04/2021 12:56

A big walk, shower, dinner and a few glasses of wine, bit of Netflix and chill. That sounds like heaven to me. Advertising an Air BnB with a TV and Netflix will make it much more appealing.

RampantIvy · 17/04/2021 13:00

This wankiness of watching movies on tablets and laptops and sneer at people watching the same thing on a tv is bloody ridiculous 😂
I prefer my movies on 50inch rather than 15inch
Doesn't make me old or lame

I agree @SchrodingersImmigrant

DD is a student in a house share with 7 other students (average age 20). They have a huge TV in the living room where they congragate in the evening to watch TV. This is their down time. Up until this week they couldn't go out or do much else in the evening.

I can't think of a more joyless way to watch something than watching it on a laptop or tablet with crap sound quality. I would far rather curl up on the sofa and be able to change my position from time to time without affecting my ability to see the screen.

Taikoo · 17/04/2021 13:09

I'm very well travelled and I can tell you that it's so nice to have a tv laid on.
I just came back from a week's break in a very ancient and historical city.
I did a lot of walking, nosing around and was out all day but it's still so nice to come back, switch on a tv and chill before bed.
I always put on the tv when I'm getting up and ready to head out for the day.
I like to watch the local news at the place I'm staying in too.

You say you have rubbish internet.
All the more reason to lay on a tv then, I would have thought.

Moonface123 · 17/04/2021 13:17

No tv would be absolutely fine with me as I never watch it.
But l suppose l am in the minority.
What about a smart tv, don't need an ariel ?

DdraigGoch · 17/04/2021 13:22

I can't say that I've ever actually used a hotel room TV. Provide a well-stocked bookshelf instead.

You're not going to be short of bookings in any case this year.

I'm jealous. Clearly you aren't in the UK as we can't travel anywhere yet Envy
Hardbackwriter · 17/04/2021 13:42

You can travel to and stay in self-contained accommodation (e.g. an air b and b) in England - you've been able to since April 12.

RampantIvy · 17/04/2021 13:46

Of course you can. My fingers were working more quickly than my brain.

Although, we are trying to look for an airbnb so that we can take our daughter back to university, and all the ones anywhere near her accommodation state for work purposes only and won't accept bookings Sad

Taikoo · 17/04/2021 13:47

Correct, I'm not in the UK.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 17/04/2021 14:15

@RampantIvy maybe they haven't updated their entries yet? As PP said, self contained self catered accommodation is allowed now. Or it could be that those you're looking at are rooms in houses ie where you don't have the full accommodation, which I assume would come under same rules as hotels so not open til May 17th.

RampantIvy · 17/04/2021 14:20

No, we have been looking at apartments. To be fair it is a city with two universities, one of them having a medical school, so maybe they really need these places for key workers. It's fine. I can do a day trip to take DD back, and we will do a more leisurely visit after May 17th.

RaginSpice · 17/04/2021 14:45

Sorry if someone has suggested already but - why not just get a smart tv? That’s what I have and have had in most holiday air bnbs.

No aerial needed (so they won’t get live tv but that’s not a bad thing as you won’t need to pay tv licence) but it has apps instead for catch up e.g. ITV hub, all 4, Netflix etc where they can login and watch.

Most tv apps are free to use too and if they want to watch Netflix they’ll already have an account to login to.
