@PickAChew I tried to PM you but for some reasons it doesn’t want to send🙂

I was trying to decipher some of the books you have to expand my bookshelf and would be grateful for suggestions what’s worth having.

Sadly I can’t afford newish books like Dishoom but any recommendations of older books would be very welcome.

Thank you 🙂

@FrenchBoule

Sorry - I have pms disabled after some weirdness, a few years ago.

I can recommend these two. I ought the Ivor Peters book in the works for about a fiver but most of his recipes are online, as the book was based on his blog. My favourite from the book is the stolen chicken. The Shaljam Ghosht is also delicious and there's some lovely veg sides.

The Anjum Anand book is from 2007 and available second hand, online. I've made loads from it, over the years, but her simple lentil curry has become one of my staples.

Meera Sodha has some lovely, very accessible recipe books and has many of her recipes on her website.

There's some great recipes on the olive magazine website, too.

I'm also a big scourer of charity shops. Some books end up going back (mostly if they're all man cooking) but I've had a couple of gems.

@PickAChew thank you very much.

I have Misty Ricardo both volumes and The Curry Bible by Dan Toombs that I got for Christmas.
I notices you have V. Sinkh that is on my ebay watchlist.
I’m ogling Rick Stein’s India but out of my price range atm.

The name you recommended rang a bell so I went to check- low and behold I have her “Vegeterian Indian Feast” lying forgotten so might leaf through that.

I bought some weird spice combos and the other bits and bobs required, we are having “curry Friday night” with DH (that extends to Saturday with leftovers)

I love cooking and not shy to try new stuff.

The Vivek Singh book is a recent acquisition. I've not tried anything from it, yet.

The Dan toombs books tend to be British restaurant style very much man cooking!

FrenchBoule · 18/04/2021 13:06

I must say I found Misty’s books better as tried a few recipes from Dan’s book and already marked the possible alterations.

I just went on ebay and had a look at few titles.

I miss the car boot sales and charity shops, thanks (not) Covid .

Just like with everything else, you need to know what you’re looking for as general search for cuisines doesn’t bring up much hence my ask for authors/titles

Thanks again 🙂

The leftovers are the best bit, sometimes. There's only me and dh eating it so I might make a meat dish, served with simple sides or something from the freezer, one night, then a Dal or a veg dish, the next night, served with the remains of the meat dish. The remains of that might become lunch, or part of the next night's dinner, or go in the freezer.

I do a mix of recipes straight from a book and ones that have evolved to our tastes and what I readily have on hand. One of my staples is a coconut curry with chicken or fish and I tweak the sourness and general spicing accordingly. I regularly do an aubergine dish, loosely based on several recipes I have, strongly featuring garlic and fennel and cumin seeds.

You don't have to buy books to try out recipes. I would suggest Bombay chef,cooking schooking,
vahchef vah, Kabita's kitchen, chef Ranveer, Hebbars kitchen on you tube are all good.
You can just bookmark or write them down once you have tried their recipes.

ProfessorLayton1 · 18/04/2021 13:51

I love food lab as well- chef Sangyot Kerr.

ProfessorLayton1 · 18/04/2021 13:52

Your food lab- Sanjyot Keer.
I would really love to know where to get authentic Thai/ Chinese vegetarian recipes.

Betty000 · 18/04/2021 16:15
