And no I'm not Indian.

Where does 'Nasi Goreng' belong? That's my current favourite thing.

We don't have too many different takeaways or restaurants here - and my husband has very same-y tastes - pizza, Indian or Chinese - but the same things all the time.

My favourite when I'm in London is Pho.

username48583 · 16/04/2021 10:06

I think I have to agree my husband is Indian so my MIL taught me a lot of Indian dishes and she makes some amazing food.
Having said that I do also love Italian.
We have a very high carb diet Grin

ginghamstarfish · 16/04/2021 10:07

I would say Turkish, if I had to chose one.

Indonesia mainly. I love Indonesian food, but to be honest the version of Nasi Goreng I cook and eat tends to be the Dutch version. (Indonesian food in the Netherlands is the same as Indian food in the UK.) So mine is probably very inauthentic but I love it.

No one has mention Jollof rice though - absolute pinnacle of food. So that has to put West Africa in the running?

I'd put Middle Eastern and Chinese ahead of Indian, but each to their own.

redcandlelight · 16/04/2021 10:09

carribian rice&peas and fried plantain
always a winner here

Bumberlee · 16/04/2021 10:12

If I could eat it without any weight, skin or health consequences, it would be American. Fluffy silver dollar pancakes and maple syrup for breakfast, Burger and fries for lunch and surf and turf, gumho or fried chicken, beans and cornbread with new york cheese cake or keylime pie for dessert.

Brainwave89 · 16/04/2021 10:13

I am ethnically Indian so I am biased, but I love Indian food. So flexible and a really good variety for vegans and vegetarians. For me though I really love Italian. One of the things I did over lockdown was to start making my own pasta and it is simple to do and tastes great. In terms of absolute favourite it would have to be Malaysian. I am hungry just thinking about a beef randang.

poppym12 · 16/04/2021 10:20

Italian first then Mexican, Caribbean and Indian in no particular order. I do find vegetarian Indian and Italian easier to order in restaurants or takeaways.

ShonkyCat · 16/04/2021 10:21

@PenCreed

I haven't been to Georgia but went to a Georgian restaurant years ago and had absolutely fantastic food. Sadly for the life of me I can't remember where it was.

Was it the one in Angel @ShonkyCat? I've been there once and it was great!

Currently I'm in love with Persian food, Sabrina Ghayour's cookbooks are responsible for this but I keep wanting to get others! I do love Indian food, but DH isn't keen on the spices used for most UK Indian dishes. We have a great Nepalese restaurant near us though, might try and persuade him into it soon... But I'd be sad without Italian/French meals as well.

I just like food, basically.

Could have been @PenCreed, although I don't think it was in London. It might have been in Berlin. I am annoyed with myself that I can't remember (and I can't remember who I went with either) but it was probably 20 years ago!
Tal45 · 16/04/2021 10:22

There is soooooo much good food out there!! Impossible to choose.

Mxflamingnoravera · 16/04/2021 10:33

Masala dosa is food of the gods as far as I am concerned. After a year in India it was pretty clear that most of what is served here is nothing like what you would eat in India. The street food is incredible, even something as simple as "bombay mix" in Calcutta is transformed by the addition of tomato, onion, chilli and coriander.

Whilst Dishoom is ok, my go to Indian cookbook is Sanjeev Kapoor, Mastering the Art of Indian Cookery. Any recipe I have ever followed in that book is delicious.

I have also spent a fair amount of time in China and had a lot of formal banquets, I really did not get on with the food of Shanghai but I was OK with Cantonese food in Hong Kong.

I rarely eat in Indian or Chinese restaurants in the UK and never ever have takeaways. I will happily eat in a dabha style cafe in Southall or in a South Indian place that does dosas but the high street places - nah.

Alondra · 16/04/2021 10:39

Spanish real food (not tourist tapas), just basic Mediterranean cousine.

I love with all my heart Asian food, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai...but my go to everyday cooking is Spanish. Love my fish, salads, olive oil, garlic, legumes, lamb roasts, sheep cheese, crusty breads.....

BogRollBOGOF · 16/04/2021 10:39

Travelling through India was a delight. The joy started in Tibet with the most amazing yak curry and yak burger after a long, bland, oily month in China (Mongolia was a relief!) Although dumplings in the north of China were great.
Then through Nepal, into India, acrosd the north then through the south. I just wish I could have appreciated the lighter seafood more after a nasty bout of Mumbai Motions aquired at the airport on the way down.

Not had Thai for a long time. It requires a restaurant and a babysitter.

Greek and Turkish are wonderfully "simple" and fresh.

AryaStarkWolf · 16/04/2021 10:43

Agree, my very favourite

Disfordarkchocolate · 16/04/2021 10:45

I agree, it's definitely my favourite. Chinese food comes second.

adrianmolesmole · 16/04/2021 10:52

Agreed, Indian food is the very best!!

But I also love Thai, Italian, Sushi, Spanish Tapas and fish n' chips.

Pedalpushers · 16/04/2021 10:55

Italian is my favourite, followed by Greek. French food is rubbish, no idea how the country got such a reputation for cuisine, every single meal I've eaten in France has been terrible.

stairway · 16/04/2021 11:01

I like British Indian food, french Indian was nice too but a bit different. I have tried more authentic Indian food and didn’t like it. I

Tlollj · 16/04/2021 11:01

Pie and mash and jellied eels. No contest.

billy1966 · 16/04/2021 11:02

I adore it, but I love other foods too.
Love Japanese.
Love good Mexican.
Thai.
Hong Kong Chinese food is incredible too.
Malaysian food.
Indonesian is fab.
Korean food.

I enjoy European food and as a good cook they are easy to recreate but Asian food is tricky.

pinkgin85 · 16/04/2021 11:07

I'd like to mention Malaysian food as being absolutely delicious!
It's a combination of Indian and Thai flavours. Nasi Goreng, Beef Rendang, Roti Canai, Satay mmmmmmmmm

StayingHere · 16/04/2021 11:16

South Indian food in particular is AMAZING. Much as I love it though, I actually think Japanese food is the best cuisine on earth!

chipsndippy · 16/04/2021 11:21

The dishoom cook book is fabulous...especially the lamb biryani!
